Used to think a Tasmanian team was a neccessary and just thing for a so called "National" Competition.

But now I (fully) realise that the AFL is just a corrupt Victorian shitshow and the Tasmanian people would be better off without it.

The AFL has put it in their contract in attempt to manipulate the Tasmanian Government but when push comes to shove they’ll still allow entry even without a roof.
There’s so much extra revenue in TV coverage alone for the AFL with a 19th team.

There would be the 12 VFL clubs, plus 12 additions. Vic would have 10 against 14 from the rest of the country.

I don’t know. There were even more clubs during the state-leagues Era. It all depends on the ability of the clubs in finding and developing talent.

There will always be good, bad, and mediocre clubs. With 10, 16, 20, or 24 clubs. It could work.

NT will never happen, not enough population. Maybe Canberra could, but unlikely. NSW & QLD extra teams would all be predicated on them showing significant growth in the sport, but they're still rugby states.

Extra club is coming from WA if anywhere.

Victoria should drop at least 1 club but with the financial strength of the AFL(VFL) these days I can't see them letting it happen. It's crazy StKilda even exist these days given how unsuccessful and worthless they are as a club.

I've always felt as long as there is a team in each state its national. The territories are less important.

Yeah we shouldn't be adding teams. We should be getting rid of them. Talent is already spread too thin. We rarely see football played at the absolute elite level...

Will require a completely new bid and business model to be approved.

As it currently stands the best case scenario has Labor winning and not requiring the Greens to form government.

Things just keep moving along.

Labor needs the greens to form government ( Labor say they won’t deal with them and that’s BS )

Then the stadium is dead. Tasmania putting a acceptable business model forward without the stadium isn’t going to happen.

The cost of the stadium is irrelevant the Greens simply will not deal with Labor unless it kills it off.

One league split into two tiers (divisions) of 12 teams each: High & Low.

This is how one deals with the weaker clubs. They would mostly play against each other.

Minor Round

Clubs would play a double round robin within the divisions, plus 2 interdivisional matches (24 games).

High Div. - games on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Low Div. - games on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.

Low Division would be a kind of AFL’s Sunday League.

It would also have two tiers.

1. Gold Cup
High: Top-6
Low: Top-2
Same system as today.
All 8 teams would play in the High in the following year.

2. Silver Cup
High: 7th - 10th (4)
Low: 3rd - 6th (4)
Similar system as today.
QF & SF winners would play in the High in the following year.

Every team would a have a shot at the title. The High Division would just have better odds.

You need to be able to showcase the skills of the game.

You need 25000 people to show up and ratings.

That’s Friday and Saturday night in the middle of winter.

No comparison with GWS and Gold Coast where they are try to tap into a huge market and massive dollars long term.

I know it wont happen, but if Tassie ie the government are being screwed with a $1bil stadium, it would be great if they do a Jack Jumpers and in their first 3 seasons they, made a GF, a SF then win a flag, and stick it right up the AFL and its clubs who said Tassie has to hit the ground running and cant be a problem child ( ie financial basket case) like the Gold Coast and GWS.

Sydney had 2 lots of private owners had to pay $6.5m - paid late and $3.5m for the 2nd licence.

WCE had to pay $4m upfront after being told they could pay it over 10 years.

Brisbane Bears - Skase finally ponied up the $4m after many months delay, then Ruben Peleman paid about $10m for the licence and to make sure the Bears survived.

Crows - SANFL paid $1m up front and the rest over 5 years, but crows paid the SANFL a sub licence fee over 10 years.

Freo - WAFC paid $4m fee over 6 years, but Freo paid WAFC a sub licence fee over 10 years.

Port - SANFL paid $4m fee over 6 years, but Port paid SANFL a sub licence fee over 10 years.

GC and GWS didn't have to pay a licence fee and have been receiving extra annual distributions of between $12m and $22m a year over and above the base distributions clubs get + transfer of AFL Club Support Memberships fees + travel and accommodation subsidies all clubs get. Plus they both received about $35m each to set up the new clubs.

GC and GWS argue they contribute 1/18th each to the TV/media deals. That's crap but its hard to work out what broadcasters would have paid the last few deals without them.

The TV/media deals since the last 2 expansion teams entered the comp have been - $1.253bil 2012-16, $2.508bil 2017-22 before covid cuts, $0.946bil 2023-24 and $4.5bil 2025-2031.

AFLW has only been factored into the last 2 deals as the 2017-22 deal was signed in August 2015 when AFLW was a thought bubble at best.

Tassie don't pay a licence fee but have to provide a stadium with a roof - something no other team has had to do, which is now going to cost close to $1bil.

The $360m the AFL has promised the Tassie team isn't anything overly that special.

• $210m will be annual distributions of which $140-$150m is base distributions all clubs are getting over that decade.
• $93m in game development. The AFL said they would put over $1bil in game development Australia wide between 2023 and 2032. How much of that $1bil is allocated to Tassie?? How much is over and above that $1bil.
• $33 million to develop young players in three new "talent academies". That definitely is special funding
• $10 million for the club's training and administration facility
• $15 million for the stadium, up from the $5mil they contributed to AO and $0 to Perth Stadium, $10m to Carrara.

The AFL has given most clubs $5m to upgrade their home stadium base for AFLW and in particular lighting, changerooms for home and the opposition teams and basic infrastructure like better interchange benches and communications for broadcasters facilities. Basically with AFLW extending into cricket season the AFL has said they want all home team venues to be of a minimum standard and have broadcast quality lighting as more night games will be played in the hotter months.

I put this post up in the Tassie stadium thread last week. Nobody has replied to my questions.

How much is the roof costing?

$40k a seat is a lot of money. What bells and whistles does it have that might make it cost so much? Are there big abnormal clean up site costs?

The last big stadium built in Oz was the Sydney Football Stadium for $828m, completed in August 2022 after a 2 year build and had a $40m demolition cost for the old SFS. It has 42,500 seats no roof, just grandstands and supposedly all 42,500 seats are undercover. So that is approx $20k per seat.

I know construction costs have gone up about 40% since Covid so $30k a seat is in the ball park. Is the roof costing $10k x 23,000 seats = $230m??
