AFL House has dodged a bullet several times now but the rule of percentages say it cannot survive forever.
The players who have been medically retired from concussions are either lower profile players like Aiden O’Driscoll or players without vast long-term contracts.
Not one player with a million dollar-a-year mega extension has yet been forced from the game with their club caught holding the baby.
It is why confirmation from AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon’s that the league will seek to negotiate maximum length contracts for players in the next CBA is such a welcome and timely move.
He told SEN: “It would be something we would have to talk to the players association about and I think it will be on the table for the next collective bargaining agreement.”
It will take plenty of haggling and might require compromises on the way back for a CBA that is still two years away given the current deal lasts to 2027.

20 teams
Play everyone once
  • Rivalry round
  • Gather round
  • One other game for equality purposes like the current system of the three tiers of 6

22 game season

Get one of the Melbourne clubs to move to NT whilst also creating WA3

Again:

24 teams, 24 games

  • Keep the 10 Vic clubs.
  • Add Tas, WA3, SA3, Qld3, NT, & ACT.
  • Divide all in 2 groups (High/Low).
  • Play everyone in your group twice, plus 2 games against the other group.
  • Establish two Finals tournaments (Gold/Silver).

  • Two Gather Rounds.
  • Two byes during the Minor Round.

I know you are thinking outside the box here but the current standard of football is average with the 18 teams now.

Another team is being added that will dilute the pool of players further.

We need to be reducing teams (in Victoria) but the TV networks will never go for it.

You know how each team has between 2 and 6 A graders

Doing the above would be a disaster and change that to 0-3

That and Australian culture hates tier systems in their sport

But there would be more spots for coaches and other positions. It increases the odds of fresher ideas.

It also reduces the Vic clubs in percentage.

There are also more details that such a concept could explore, like an earlier “Academy Draft”. It’s all just a sketch still.

It would be single-tiered. It’s just that one group would be more favoured than the other. Finals would split 6-2.

This graphic was on First Crack tonight.

They also said Brisbane have only lost 3 of their last 20 games on the road, so their game against Freo is huge for both clubs.

Brisbane have been a bit slack against the bottom 9. They don't switch on anywhere as much as they should playing them, which makes sense for a premiership side and a side pushing for top 4 for 7 seasons in a row.

They drew with North at Docklands and lost to Sydney and Melbourne at the Gabba. Only beat Essendon and West Coast by 3 goals - at the Gabba. Beat Richmond and Port by only 28 pts and against us they played premiership footy for 20 minutes from middle of 1st quarter - slammed on 8 goals to 2 pts.

Friday night's game in Perth will tell us a lot about what both sides will do in September. I think Brisbane win and it will confirm in my mind they are the flag favourites.

Collingwood have a great record against the crows and at AO - 10-0 in both cases and will have a 9 day break this round as opposed to only a 5 day break against the Hawks last Thursday night. Those 30 year olds wont be run off their feet us much. Not sure they will make it 11-0 x 2.

Both games will have a big bearing on what happens in September.

So who are the biggest flat track bullies against the bottom 9 teams??

Adelaide 11-0
Bulldogs 11-0
Hawthorn 10-1
Collingw'd 9-0
Gold Coast 9-1
Geelong 9-2
GWS..... 9-2
Brisbane 7-1-2
Fremantle 9-4

Gross

Ideally we have maximum 7 Vic clubs and get back to 16 but that will never happen

A tiered system works if you go back to the 80's and rather than the VFL appropriating the AFL, have a national league being the top X from every state league and relegation/promotion to/from VFL, WAFL, SANFL, etc

Of course it would just end up with same three rich V clubs finishing top

Should realistically end up being 1 team from the territories as in Northern and ACT Canberra and 1 team from Tasmania due to size. then 2 teams from WA, SA, QLD and NSW which is 11 then 5 from Vic to even if up to 16 total teams and a top 8 finals. That's it. No more teams anywhere else. Only reason Victoria has more is because that's pretty much where majority of the players come from and obviously has the most clubs being from the VFL days. Clubs in Victoria that IMO should remain are the bigger ones overall and more so, the ones with proper grounds and arent just a collective surrounding Melbourne.. so Collingwood, Geelong, Dogs, Hawks and Tigers. Which can sort of be seen from the zones map below. Then relocate North Melbourne and id suggest Canberra. Relocate Melbourne Demons to Northern Territory seeing as they have played alot up there and probably would fit. Then its down to Saints, Carlton and Essendon... So theyd have to just create a merge of those remaining clubs and resettle in NT, ACT and Tasmania then theres no need for this massive draft compromise when a new team comes in. Will never happen though.

But 16 teams is the sweet spot... First part of fixture is the top 8 from season prior play each other and bottom 8 from previous season play each other. So that's 7 rounds there then each team players ever team once so another 15 rounds totalling 22 rounds.

Makes the Vic teams have to actually travel more at least and not just remain in Victoria

Collingwood have won their last 10 games at AO, but 6 are against the Crows ( 2018-2023 inc 2020 during covid) 3 in gather round - Swans, Hawks and Saints and once against Port in 2023, when Jamie bloody Elliot kicked that goal from the boundary line late in them game for them to win by 2 points and they were in the middle of winning all those close games in their premiership year.

We are 2-1 against them at AO since 2014, and since 2014 have played them 9 times at the MCG, 2 times at Docklands ( once was our home game in 2021 but Covid BS) and 1 time at the Gabba during Covid. Our record away is 3-6, 1-1 and 1-0 respectively.

Surprised no posts re AFLW game(s)

Matilda’s two sisters playing on opposite teams

Girls are looking more and more athletic

They need to be coached running / leading patterns better

A bit too straight line

Good to watch though

I'm sure there is an AFLW thread on our AFLW sub board for that.

That wasn't having a go at you, I know I posted in that thread a few times last year.

Turned it on just before half time and saw Ray Chamberlain umpiring. Hope he raises the standard because I reckon AFLW umpiring is worse than AFL umpiring.

Got confused with Andrew McKay’s daughters
That's who I thought you might have meant. Saw the older sister on AFL 360 the other day and she has #5 jumper like her old man, and the younger sister who looks like a feisty bloodnut who decided to go with #55. Saw her make a big tackle on a ruckwoman just before half time and that's when I noticed Razor call for a ball up and because the tackle was up against the boundary line, he moved the ball 10m in form the line to toss it up.

Brother’s wearing a 555 number jumper
Nice homage

Is he playing for Adelaide Uni blacks???

I played with a bloke who wore 173 ( I started with 191 which became 19 and then 9 - not because I went up the grades). Mid season his number got ripped off and the Club Secretary gave him new numbers for mum to sow them on. She sowed them on as 731!!

I've complained about every single Thursday night game this season, this week when there isn't one I'm like what da **** man?
