Pos and Neg from the derby

Positives:
Zac Clarke taking some marks and kicking goals at FF.
Switching Fyfe forward in the second half. A bloke who can take some contested marks and is clean below his knees. Playted a part in setting up a feew goals for us.
Neale was very good, liked his second and third efforts, ditto Suban when he came on.

Negatives:
We still have this mental weakness where we fall in a great hole and lose our skills and composure for long periods. If West Coast had kicked straight we might have started the last quarter still 2 or 3 goals down, and not been able to get over the line.

Zac Clarke can be frustrating at times but we just need to keep playing him. He has huge potential but like most big guys it will take a few years . Loved Maynje going back. Neale could release Fyfe to fgward line which would be positive

Positives:
  • All the players that were under pressure put in a nice performance. Hope de boer and clarke put in performances like that more often.
  • Suban was pretty good as the sub and when he came on.
  • A derby win is always a good way to end the weekend.
Negatives:
  • Some injuries to look out for.

All the positives you guys mentioned;

Sutcliffe is becoming a real workhorse with a big tank.

If Dawson and McPharlin out then hopefully Ibbo and Silvagni can slot in... I know it's not ideal but at least we've got one near-AA defender and another that's in ripping form at the moment to provide some support.

Clarke did some good stuff up forward today; but if Bradley is building well then I think we could look at his inclusion, if not for Port then definately for Geelong.

Anyone know how Simpson and Sylvia played this weekend?

  • We still need to fix our forward lone.

By far the best two word explanation of our problems this year.

If we can go from a forward lone to a forward line, and kick more effectively into our forward line, we will improve.

Injuries suck.

+
Lachie Neale
Clarke starting to pull his finger in.
Hard fought win whilst well under the pump early in the second.
Forward line functioned much better with little contribution from Pav

-
Have two tough matches to come, really need to get mojo back quickly
Dawson possible injury.

Mundy in trouble? There's vision of him dropping Selwood off the ball.

Why do I always miss the best bits of the telecast?? Hope Mundy at least made him earn it...

Thought that was DeBoer's best game for 12 months or more. Suban's best game for the year. Our second stringers all gave us something today, now if Sutcliffe can tidy up his kicking....;)

Pos

  • Lachie
  • Ballas
  • De Boer repaid the faith
  • Got to watch it in a pro Eagles group
  • Eagles not putting us away when they could have
Neg

  • Going missing for large chunks of the game
  • Dawson still undisciplined
  • Ball coming out of our back line far to easily at times

Explain Dawson being undisciplinedo_O

Positives
- MTB, Clarke & Suban all responded strongly
- didn't drop our bundle when we lost the lead
- won without a big Pav influence
- Neale's best game
- sandi taking clunks
- Mayne in some form & covered well in defense
- crowley got a scalp.

Negatives
- some bad kicking errors in the 2nd
- possible injuries to Dawson/McPharlin
- possible MRP with Mundy

Neale is my hero.

We will have confidence.

Negatives is De Boer is still average unless he gets a kick up the proverbial.

Still very lacklustre and a world away from our peak form - I'm glad we had enough class when it mattered, but compared to the league pacesetters at the moment it was rather unconvincing. It seems that teams have discovered that the method of beating the Dockers now is to clog our forward line and then destroy us on the slingshot; why do we have to work so hard to grind out a score, while our opposition do it easily after our periods of dominance?

Thank God WCE missed eight very gettable shots in that second quarter or we would have been battling underwater in that second half. Still, we actually did box on efficiently once it looked like the game was getting away from us early in the third - mind you, all 42 players looked absolutely knackered by the final 10 minutes which doesn't bode well for next week.

Interesting new technique of maintaining control of the ball with Hawthorn-esque chip passing and very deliberate buildups. Against teams like the Eagles it actually did work most of the time, but given the way our ball movement broke down in the second quarter you do have to wonder if it would stand up to close scrutiny. Still, Pav almost played a decoy role this week and combined with the emergency move of Mayne to the half back line, it did make our forward structure look much less predictable and more varied.

Many of the suspects under the gun responded with good games - Clarke, Suban, Neale, Mayne. De Boer was better and did a solid job nullifying an underdone Hurn, but until I actually see his offensive disposals getting results I will continue to call him out until he either contributes in this regard or really is dropped. I wish Crozier hadn't panicked after fumbling that bounce and kicked his goal, because little by little he is edging himself into games more, too.

Crowley doesn't seem to be playing as tightly on his opponents anymore. Some days like today it actually works and he contributes going the other way, but after a stellar last couple of years he certainly wouldn't be up there challenging MJ or Sandi in the Doig this year...

Sandi, Mundy, Barlow, Fyfe and Neale. Together with other rotations of course, if they are there at centre bounces, we will always be a chance.

We won. We had to win. After the quietest buildup to a derby in living memory, but that's something I'll take any day!
