Possible Draft Prospects

I haven't seen them play, but how about one of the following who were in the SA U18 team. Could they be the small crumbing forward we are looking for?

Bryon Sumner (Eagles, SA)
Height: 174cm, Weight: 68kg, DOB: 16/05/91
Recruited from: Woodville South
Quick and clever midfielder with penetrating left foot. Evasiveness and clean hands overhead are two of his strengths. Performed very well for SA at NAB AFL U18 Championships.

Derick Wanganeen (Port Adelaide, SA)
Height: 172cm, Weight: 63kg, DOB: 05/02/91
Recruited from: Mallee Park
Quick midfielder whose decision-making and clean hands in traffic are his strengths. Reads the game well and has strong defensive skills. South Australian U18 representative in 2009.

Thats a big wrap Drum. Surprising they aren't being talked up more on the D & T board. If Wanganeen turns out to be half as good as Rioli, we should swoop with draft pick 13.

we need speed... jetta or rohan... i have concerns about both... jetta is older and anorexic. rohan wasnt good enough to be picked up the previous year... but i still find myself intrigued by these two and think that either may provide the x factor... thoughts????

I like the looks of Rohan, very quick, good disposal and awareness. I wouldnt be too concerned about not being picked up last year - players improve. Out of the 2 I would pick Rohan.

Is Wanganeen a top 15 type though? .....because I know this club who loves surnames. They'd probably be spooked into snaring him early if they thought we were interested.

I know its only youtube clips but Sumner looks decent in his. But is he able to play that small forward role? From that video, it looks as if he is more a wingman type... has a penetrating left foot on him though! Anyone seen more of him who would know?

I watched Sumner in the reserves GF. He looks all class getting the ball and has a long kick, but his kicking on the day was terrible many shanks and clangers both when under pressure and when free. Maybe he just had a bad finishing day. late pick/rookie IMO

Hasn't looked as good since he got injured, he may have still been effecting him.

Daniel Webb is hopefully being looked at now with the delistings of Kite,Gill, Gallaman and Lee. At 196cm and 88kg he can play CHF,RUCK and CHB. At the State screening he got the best vertical jump of the year 81cm and equalled Naitanui,s running vertical record of 102cm. He also got second in the agility test. At 19 or 20 he has got a lot of improvement left in him.

Wouldn't mind having a look at Travis Colyer. Been touted as a late first rounder to early 2nd round type. Brent Harvey clone, if he was 180cm he'd go top 5 I reckon. He's 175cm so size is an issue, however he was X-factor and explosiveness about him. Very clever midfielder, explosive speed and acceleration. Very good disposal, can kick off both legs well. Doesn't mind going in for the hardball as well-doesn't shirk contests. As I said, a Brent Harvey clone and wouldn't mind him with our first pick.

FYI - This is my top 12 as it stands on a best available basis, i.e, not taking clubs needs into account.

1. Scully - Gun of the highest order, just love watching him play, the best midfielder and player in the draft. He is better than Trengove, despite the recent talk, has hands of lightning, best inside handball I've ever seen for a lad of his age. Very strong at the contest, finds his way out of strife in a click of the fingers. Dangerous on the outside, quick and sums up a situation in a flash with good decisions. Outstanding footballer, sky is the limit, going to dominate AFL football over the next 15 years. AFL Like: Hard to say as he is his own gun self but probably Ablett as he has freakish attributes.

2. Trengove - Polished and determined is Jack, he is no-nonsense and has a very sound all-round game. Good inside and outside, pretty 50/50 there prob slightly better on the inside, hunts in packs and does good work there, strong tackler and has a good defensive side to his game. Absolute leadership material, talks on the field often directing players 10 years his senior on what to do, really does take it upon himself to bark instructions, something I like to see in a player. Always seems composed with the ball, has time and space to make decisions, looks smooth and silky. Skills mostly good and damaging, yet not explosive by any means. Quick, deceptively but given his composed nature, does not look quick. Hits most targets but can sometimes be prone to the odd blaze away. If that is his worst, he aint that bad. Will be an AFL captain, write that one down. AFL Like: Dal Santo with a bit of Murphy.

3. Martin - Fine player, excellent kick and can do some damage. Love the way he seems in control on the field, always trying to put the team to advantage. Tough as hell when he gets the ball, would do well at a strength test, fairly well built for a midfielder. Want him badly at the crows but is too good to last. Best field play kick in the draft I would say. AFL Like: Pendlebury

4. Cunnington - Love this bloke, his attack on the footy is first class. Goes in as hard as they come, never afraid to put his body on the line, busts open packs, buries his nose in and gets the hardball. Excellent hands in close, also sharp when in possession, disposes of it quickly and makes quick decisions. Excellent 2nd efforts and a good overhead mark as well. His feet can let him down at times though, not the best kick of the higher draftees, but makes up for it in all other areas, he is a dangerous player. AFL Like: Definitely Joel Selwood, absolute clone.

5. Rohan - Freak is this man, he is born to play AFL on the big stage. Obviously a flashy outside type, a finisher and a matchwinner, can do more in 10mins than most can for a whole game, but does go missing in patches as well. If he could become more consistent he would be a top 3 draft pick easily. Has excellent speed, courage and strength despite being skinny. Burns off opponents and is strong on the lead. Good hands in close and can get around many opponents. Has that unstoppable look sometimes. Just needs to work a bit harder on his defensive game and also his consistency, but this kid is going to be massive. AFL Like: Burton/ faster smarter version of Thomas

6. Morabito - Been fair bit of debate about this bloke, I for one can't see the amazing player some do. When on song he is damaging but he lacks that absolute raw x-factor that his type of players do have. Good size, good pace and good mark but nothing outstanding. That said will make a good AFL footballer especially when he fills out. A player you don't want to give space, can be dangerous. Skills need cleaning up though, misses too many targets for mine. AFL like: Taller S.Burgoyne shorter Goodes.

7. Griffiths - As mentioned before, big fan of this bloke and would take him over Butcher. Underated by some, but not all, very good reader of the play and a very good one grab mark with decent pace. Also clean field play skills which are a gem for a KP player, gets involved in the play and IMO looks every bit an AFL gun in years to come just quietly. Big injury concerns, that may throw some off. AFL like: J.Riewoldt

8. Talia - Strong KP, good mark and reader of the play. Looks every bit AFL ready, can't fault him in many areas for a KP. Is going to make someone very happy whoa re crying out for a key defender, could even end up the best KP from the draft, hard to say yet but his worth is pretty high. Port need another key defender or two, Carlile and Chaplin cannot do it all and Chad Cornes is needed. AFL like: Hurley sorta.

9. Butcher - Probably around the mark here with Butcher, he's too good for late first round but not good enough for an earlier top 5 type of pick. Mobile forward, can kick a bag and generally fairly accurate. Often a strong mark but also spills easy ones. Can turn on a dime, and has a good leap, fairly clever forward. Something doesn't sit right with me though with him that he will come out and stamp himself on the AFL when he is ready. Could end up like a Daniel Schell but probably not. Better than that, should turn into a Kurt Tippett type forward, but probably not quite that good. Good enough though for pick #9. AFL Like: Staker but more a pure forward and better.

10. Kane Lucas - Solid all round midfielder that ticks most boxes, good off both sides of his body, finds plenty of the ball and always does some damage but not a deadly player. Incredible athlete and someone who I would expect to slot straight into AFL with minimum fuss. I wouldn't rate him as an outstanding midfielder, certainly no Trengove or Scully but in that tier below, strong inside and outside pretty good all round game with some leadership potential. AFL Like: Marc Murphy but plays taller.

11. Jetta - Fast, explosive and a goalkicker. Would not be at all surprised if he joined Neville at the dees. Would love him at the crows but unsure if he will last, something we need is pace and he sure has that. I remember him killing us in the state game in Perth with his pace and goal sense. Lacks a big tank though but would be more than dangerous enough across half forward or as a crumber in early days. Not young so ready-made. AFL Like: They all look similar his type, prob McLeod/Rioli but not quite that good.

12. Tapscott - Strong player, monster kick and has a bit of x-factor around goals. Not sure on his AFL position but most likely across half forward where he can utilise his thumping kick. Not as slow as one may think and pretty good defensively, he has all the basics there, already a big size however perhaps not quite as much upside as others, and only one bag of tricks. Nonetheless, his skills and goal sense are enough for mine. AFL Like: Hurn

After this throw in Stevens, Melksham, Fitzpatrick, Menzel, Panos and Carlisle to fight out the first round. Have not seen enough of Melksham to make good assumptions on him. He is of good pace and speed but skills a bit sloppy.

Panos is also overated. Great leap and strong mark, a bully for those smaller than him but not smart enough to beat the gorillas or the smart defenders. I think he might get found out at AFL level.

Wanganeen is one player I am keen on, very dangerous when he has the ball, is very very much like Alwyn Davey, slight frame but agile as hell.

There is a fair chance that 2 or 3 of those I've listed above will be available with our first pick, and I hope we go for a decent midfielder. They always say though that the best Falcon is a good one and Gary Rohan is that man this year. If we got him I'd wet my pants....serious talent that man.

Colyer I like, he is very small but very very nippy and agile in traffic and bloody quick. Better against smaller players, not sure against the men as his skills can suddenly drop right off when the pressure is on. Not firsty round material but 2nd round likely. Reminds me a lot of Chance Bateman.

Always appreciate your insight on the draft TS, definitely the most astute draftwatchers we have on the Adelaide forums (particularly now that VC has disappeared ).


I've had a soft spot for Talia for a while now, it's a pity he A) is unlikely to slide, and B) we probably don't need a KPP defender (which is where I think he's most likely to play) anyway, because I reckon he'll be great.

I'd love us to land Tapscott, and you rate him 12th... what do you think the odds are of us getting him? For that matter, since you tend to watch this stuff closely, who is your pick for the most likely player to slide to us that we'd actually want?
