Possible Trade

Rather than another stupid BF trade like "pick 8 for Courtney Johns, deal?" I thought that this trade might actually be a possibility.

Essendon are in desperate need of a key defender, with Michael retiring (again), Johns and Lee delisted, and Fletcher soon to go. Richmond have many young key defenders, such as Thursfield, Rance, Moore etc.

Which one of these players is most expendable to Richmond, and what sort of price tag would they come with?

Cheers.

we could package up jaryd silvestor with caserly for a R2 pick, both failed to break into an irrepressible yellow and black line up in 2H of 2008 but would be a welcome addition at windy hill..

I doubt that players who can't break into a bottom eight side (with all due respect) are worth a 2nd rounder.

I remember reading that one of the two was in the VFL team of the year, but I can't remember which one.

Ah. I didn't realise he was a rookie.

So getting back to the OP, which of Moore, Thursfield, Rance and McGuane is the most expendable, and what is he worth?

ATM None. We have a great backline and all those players are needed.

Moore - Gun - Came on in leaps and bounds this year and will only get better
Thursfield - Will be our Number 1 defender.
McGuane - Is from the Gold Coast, If he has another good year we could get a First Rounder for him next year. Not worth giving up now.
Rance - Was only traded last year, didnt get a game this year. Who knows what he will be but we have him earmarked as our Fullback.

So as you can see all players are needed and will be kept.

C'mon. Help Ol' Knighter out.:p

EDIT: It's a big gamble going for an extra two years with McGuane. Either Rance misses a lot of those years and doesn't develop as much, or McGuane spends time in the twos and loses value. Cashing in now for 23, or an upgrade of 42 to 23 might be the better long term plan for you. Getting 2 years into Rance is probably going to be invaluable, and pick 23 in this draft is like a first rounder in others.

Don't forget the Gold Coast doesn't come in until the 2010 draft, so you'd need to keep McGuane for two years.

shultz + polo for 2nd rounder

this would be a good trade possibly for both clubs. We don't need either of them and they are both capable afl players. you would hope that Shulz's best footy is ahead of him and Polo's as well (with exception to his debut)

If i was down at the tigers i would be floating these two for sure and hoping for a second round pick.

Otherwise shulz and our third round for a second round pick. This might be more appealing for a side like the bombers who probably have plenty of young mids.

Last year we had the option to trade Schulz for a second rounder did we not? So why, after a year of playing a majority of the season in the 1s, and playing some solid footy, would we trade him and Polo for a second rounder?

I'm not sure that keeping all of those guys is the best move. One of them is almost certainly going to be a depth player as only 3 of them will probably fit into the team at any one time. I think if Rance comes on McGuane will benefit from being traded. Gold Coast is a definate possibility but if there is a good offer this year consider it.

My ideal draft for us this year involves getting an extra pick in the early to mid 20's. That way we could get a Sidebottom, Cahill, Roughead if we are lucky, or Johnstone/Vickery, Roughead, OKeefe/Zaharkis. Basically the top 25 players or so look very valuable and we could address all of our list needs with quality juniors.

Anyway Shulz must be offered up. And McGuane will be shopped to GC17 especially if Rance comes on and Polak makes it back?

Thursfield and moore are going nowhere, our best defenders imo. McGuane had a very good year. If rance comes along as excepted he'll take CHB. Thursfield FB and Moore and play on just about anyone. so obviously McGuane is the most vulnerable in terms of a position in the side, but until rance comes along he'll be safe. I would rather keep all of them.

What if Rance can't crack into the side??:eek:

You're kidding right? For the 1st time in 25 years we're sort of getting some sort of resemblence for a backline and now you're asking us to trade them? As we saw in the grand final, a stong backline and midfield is the key to success.

Yes, but you can't play all of them, so you can cash in and fill a hole in your list.

A key forward at 8 or 23 looks a lot nicer than having McGuane in the reserves.

You don't have pick 8 and even if you did you wouldn't trade it for McGuane.

You've missed my point.

Rather than having yet another key defender, you can afford to pick up a forward at 8 and a ruckman, or whatever else the club was intending, at 23, or a forward at 23.

You have to give something away to get something in return, and losing a key backman would not hurt Richmond, but what you get in return could very well help you.
