Lets sign Day or Watts they slip in nicely to Jenkins role....Not!
Yep.

Jenkins is borderline irreplaceable for us if we do want premiership success in the near future. He's the perfect blend of height, speed and work-rate that really compliments both our game style, and forward line. With him and the chemistry of our forward-line right now, there isn't a side that can defend it and most probably won't be throughout our window.

On his own, he's not worth the money... but as a whole, the longer this season has gone, the more willing i am to part with it.

I'm still really hopeful that Freo re-sign Neale.

I think he's entirely the wrong fit for our midfield under Pyke's game plan. Matt Crouch has the ability to be our lone dedicated extractor once Thommo retires, with B Crouch and Sloane filling that inside-outside centre role. Lyons and Knight are the main supporting cast, CEY and Gore are handy when injuries strike. My preference would be trading for someone of the likes of Angus Brayshaw who is a bit of more a physical midfielder, now that the likes of Tyson, Viney, Oliver and Petracca are making their mark at Melbourne.

How do you know Gore is handy at AFL level if he hasn't even played a game at that level yet?

what makes you think the Pyke game plan has 1 lone inside extractor? We have had Thommo and Crouch in the majority of games this year.

I don't think you can have only 1 extractor, thats asking a lot of 1 guy who can't play a full game in the guts and if has a down game puts the whole gameplay on the blackfoot. And as the only extractor id expect a lot of down games!

I don't for certain but if our main midfielders + CEY were already injured I'm reasonably confident that he could come in and play a role. Unfortunately it's not cost-effective or realistic to keep proven AFL talent in the reserves (though I'd argue we did so last year).

I should have specified full time/pure extractor ie. Priddis. Neither he, Neale or M Crouch can play anywhere else. B Crouch and Sloane as 'combination' midfielders if you will, are more than competent enough at the stoppage but can also perform other roles.

I see your point about us already playing M Crouch, Thommo (and Lyons) in the one midfield, but as it stands we often seem to try and get at least one of them out of the middle at all times anyway due to pace and spread issues. I think with the right cattle and circumstances (eg. when Thommo isn't just shy of 300 games, Crouch has developed more of a tank over the 2017 pre-season), Pyke would play someone a little more versatile in one of their places.

Spot on Tex. If Matt is playing 70% game time then someone has to be doing the extracting. Thompson currently seems to be doing this , both with Matt , and when he is off and vice versa. 2 wont be a problem to manage

If the worst should happen we'll have to play him, but I'd be wary of talking up our depth too much before it's been put to the test, which luckily it hasn't so far under Pyke. Talking up our depth at the moment is something that just doesn't sit right with me, feels like Port supporters back in 2014 and the preseason of 2015 claiming they had great depth off the back of their reserves being SANFL runners up, and we all know what their list looks like now...

There could certainly be a fool's gold scenario there, and it our SANFL regulars are thrown into the fire, things could prove ugly. However, if our depth is really tested for a significant period of time, we're probably not going to contend in that year anyway. What I'm advocating for is recruiting players that are versatile and meet our future needs, rather than putting all our stock into trading for a guy that is likely to have just won an AA guernsey playing a very particular role that I don't think is our core weakness.

As an aside, I think Port's depth was crippled by taking the eye off the ball with their lower profile trades after having success with those acquisitions in Hinkley's first year or two, and placing too much emphasis on their big ticket trades (Ryder was an awful decision). I think we've been savvy in that area for the most part.

For someone who gets so much of the pill, Neale's metres gained stat is pretty small.

2016: 313.3m
2015: 337.2m
2014: 238.4m

Suggests a lot of handballs and short kicks...
Andrew Gaff is yet to sign and out of contract at year's end, any idea what his metres gained stat is??

A bit of a non issue really. If someone like Neade/M.Crouch made a career feeding and setting up the really damaging ball users, well they are doing better for us then trying to gain an extra 100m.

It doesn't matter if he doesn't re-sign if our recruiting team don't think he is the right person for the job we won't go hard for him. From all reports we didn't go that hard for Polec or Aish. While the jury is still out on the final analysis early results seem to vindicate these decisions. Not that we could convince someone not wanting to come, but the noises out there would have been louder is we REALLY wanted them. Like when the news broke about our massive offer to Jeremy Cameron.

Correct.

I know it's an impressive sounding stat, but someone like Smith pads that stat with his kick ins from behinds. Kicks to himself, runs 10 m then belts it 50. So he gets 60 everytime a behind is scored

Not sure if anyone heard this morning on Triple M Roo and Ditts, Ditts supposedly heard that we will be announcing a big signing this week. Take with a pinch of salt I guess but we only canbe hopeful.

Given the man next to him, I think you can take it with more than a pinch of salt.

If Roo came out and said "he heard a rumour" about a club signing, it's effectively a club announcement at that point, so he tells Ditts to say it.

Watch yourself, keep saying bad things about Smith and I'll have to retaliate with a few choice words about Rat.
