Sorry, I know it's not football related at all :o but I need a bit of info here in good 'ol Brisbane town and it's surrounding suburbs ;)

May be taking up a job opportunity in Banyo and need to start looking at where to buy/rent

Want to be relatively close to Brisbane (< 30mins away) as well as under 30mins away to Banyo and if possible a beach close by.....is this possible?

Banyo; what's it like?

TOP 5 good/bad places in/around Brisbane

Please help :)

Banyo is near the Brisbane Airport which is located about 16 km (30 minute drive) north of Brisbane. Try and get a place around Chermside - its probably the best suburb in northern Brisbane.

Brisbane is full of mudflats - you need to travel to the Sunshine Coast (just over an hours drive north of Banyo) or to the Gold Coast (about an hour and 45 minute drive south of Banyo).

Google maps will help you a lot too, check out housing real estate web sites and search for a house/apartment that is within your budget and has what you need, for example a garage for your car or an outdoor area.

Forget Cozi's advice - she is known to deliberately mislead on this forum. ;)

Firstly, you want to find a place that is as far away from the Redlands shire as possible. The locals don't know it, but the water supply has been tampered to "control" that particular population. There was talk at some stage to build a wall to prevent the red necks from entering the proper city, but Can Do Newman is currently occupied with his tunnels.

Banyo is a lovely old suburb with Olde Worlde charm and a vibrant live music and night-life scene with some of the finest RSLs and Bingo Halls in the state. You can also find some very affordable accomodation in the area. It is convenient with access to schools, shops, and public transport, as well as some of the most spacious backyards in Brisbane. On the downside, it is a seminary.

Renting in Brisbane is a nightmare and choosing a suburb to purchase a house will basically come down to financial. If you have cash you would look at nice suburbs like Banyo, Northgate, Chermside, Nundah etc all on the north side of town. If you need to pay less than 400k then you are probably looking at Caboolture and Deception Bay (also known as conception bay).

Yep, not much in the way of traditional beaches around Brisbane. Redcliffe is the closest you'll come and even then the beaches there aren't that flash. Luckily though if you get a house around the Banyo area, it's close to the highway and that means about an hour trip to the Sunshine Coast.

Banyo/Nudgee/Virginia probably hasn't seen the growth in property prices that other areas in Brisbane has to a certain extent and still has a bit of a daggy and dodgy name. But it's a good location, picks up seabreezes nicely.

It really depends what you're after. You want cafes, places to eat out, etc, as JD said go closer down to Ascot/Clayfield/Nundah. But it starts to get a tad expensive in those areas.

:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Thank you for all the information guys, very impressed :)

Max I want to spend is about $300 p/w with a backyard area so the German Shep pup has some room to play :o

So there's no real point getting a place close to the water according to
CoZi36.....hmmmmm

Keep the info coming guys, and once again, Thank you

There is a dog off leash area at Nudgee Beach which is a few minutes from Banyo. While it is a mud flat type of beach, it is awesome for dogs - they love it. If you are working at Banyo and need a place with a backyard, then there are a few suburbs you could try. You are virtually no chance at getting a house for $300 a wk in any of the inner northern suburbs like Hamilton or Clayfield but any of the suburbs like Chermside, Nundah, Northgate, Wavell Heights might be starting to get into your price range. They wouldn't be anymore than 10-15 minutes drive (at the most) from Banyo and are less than 30 minutes from the city at any time other than peak hour.

Some of the northern bayside suburbs like Brighton, Shorncliffe and Sandgate are OK as well. $300 should get you somewhere a couple of streets back from the water although I don't think you can have a dog off leash at those beaches.

Like anything though, you get what you pay for. We set our limit at $300 but found we had to pump it up by a few bucks to find a nice place.

Just check out realestate.com.au - it has a rentals section which will give you a good idea.

I would look on the Redcliffe Penisinsula. ie Margate.
You can have long walks on the beaches there. Suttons is popular.

or this side, maybe Shorncliffe, a nice area close to Banyo, maybe 20 mins in traffic.

Closer to Banyo is Nudgee Beach.

I wouldnt recommend Deception bay though, a very harsh area.A massive problem with illegal drugs there.

You can get a place in Redcliffe, it has some beachy looking areas, but you will be travelling a bit to work, during peaks hours it takes forever to get from point A to point B. If you try the inner suburbs in nothern Brisbane it won't take you as long to travel and rent won't be as expensive. Take The Flying Belgian's advice. I know a bit about the northern suburbs but not a great deal, as I live in the outer south-western suburbs (inbetween Brisbane and Ipswich).

I would suggest ringing up house agencies in Brisbane and start getting information on houses that you can move into, if you give them your criteria I'm sure that they can do the research for you. it could help you if you compile a list of things you want in your house. Also what you should do (your company may pay for it) is fly up for 2-3 days and find the house and take a look yourself. Buy a Brisbane street directory so you can get familar with the areas.

When I moved from Adelaide to Brisbane in January 2002, my parents flew up here in December 2001 and had only 3 days to find a house. Our place was supposed to go to auction but since my parents were desprite they came to a deal to buy it.

When are you thinking of moving up here?

At least you will be able to see Carlton play the Lions at the Gabba in round 21 too, a bonus for you.

Its not far Cozi from margate on the peninsula to Banyo.

My cousin lives in margate, and one of his kids goes to ACU at Banyo.

margate is nice as you can go fishing, walks on beach etc.Good shops locally, and close to airport and city. Only 30 mins in normal traffic, 45 in peak.

I always enjoyed living in New Farm (close to the Cty, Kangaroo Point for rock climbing and Valley for entertainment) but since I left in 1999 it's got quite expensive! Maybe consider sharing and renting a better house???

Hey TwoBlueEyes, one can't help but feel that you are part of the family.

If you want, we have plenty of pics of Brisbane Lions players that you can use to replace the one of Judd as your avatar.

I'll chip in $20 for you if you decide to take out membership with the Brisbane Lions.

Nice choice of puppy by the way. I'm minding a 15 year old fella German Shepherd. I throw the small Divine Tempters treats and he catches them. Good going for an old dog. Shame he is a terrible guard dog though.

One would hope that he is in maroon, blue and gold by then.

One plus I see is that I won't be seeing those disgusting pee jumpers you wear in away games sometime......when is the old Fitzroy jumper coming back as a permanent away jumper?

and stir..... One hell of a burly mix there… Is that a hook I see?

I'm not going to bite...

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say stay clear of redcliffe, margate etc as the hornibrook is a nightmare at peak times and working in Banyo you need to stay this side of the hornibrook. My suggestions would be Carseldine, Chermside, Taigum, Fitzgibbon, Banyo, Northgate Virginia, Bracken Ridge. You would find rentals for $300 in these areas. Clayfield, Kedron Nundah etc - $300 will get you a bloody hovel. The recommended suburbs will see you a 10 minute drive for sandgate and shorncliffe. Bribie Island is a 40 minute drive and offers great camping, fishing and 4wding and surf beaches. An hour will see you on the sunshine coast at Caloundra etc. It will take you 25 minutes to get from home to parking at the gabba and from northgate train station 15 minutes on a train to the cbd. Hop onto real estate dot com and have a squiz. Hope this is helpful.

Redcliffe has 2 entries, from northlakes and from the hornibrook though.

I love Bribie though. But its bridge access is worse than Redcliffe. I have been caught in traffic for hours if their has been an accident mid bridge, or the police are doing random checks when people come onto the island.

Great for fishing though and Woorim is excellent surfing.

The whole Caboolture to Bribie, Road and bridge need duplicating with the amount of traffic it gets.

My suggestions would be...Bracken Ridge.

Having grown up there, I don't believe I'm in a position to endorse or discourage that suggestion. I did shiver though...:D

There are certain suburbs I would never like to live in, and Bracken Ridge is one of them.
Along with Darra, Oxley, Durack, Inala,Deception Bay, Caboolture,Woodridge.

I agree to stay south of the peninusla if you are going to Banyo daily - the Hornibrook and the highway are just as bad as each other traffic wise. I live at Chermside so I'm a bit biased to this area but have to tell you, I think you'd be struggling these days for a $300 rental here too - well for anything decent anyway.

A big plus for this area is the free bus straight to the Gabba on game day. :thumbsu:

There's plenty of dog off-leash places around all this area including the Nudgee Beach mudflats as already mentioned.
