Ha ha the Bomber board is epic, that much salt can't be good for your heart.

Not big fans of hiking either it seems. :p

Previously they have been holding up how many minutes are left, I've noticed 5, 3, 2, 1 and even 30 seconds.
The red board was produced with 2 minutes to go and the last quarter was the only time I've seen it before.
Maybe that's their new MO going forward?
I think it means it’s red time, and if you give up a goal your contracts will be ripped up.

There would have been a couple of contracts being ripped up at the end of the second then.

Just watching most of the footy shows and you’d swear the Druggies ripped us a new one! Have I missed something. Gary Lyon tonight, quote “I’m convinced about the Magpies but more convinced about Essendon” WTF?????

Geez. After wins against the bottom 2 and Brisbane. I'd want to wait a few more weeks before being convinced of where they are at

maybe convinced they will finally scrape into the 8, but that's about it. 6-8 they will finish imo.

lol omg I thought they would be over it by now but just going through facebook they are still salty as ever, cant accept they were beaten by a better side. Sad.

Some of them need to get a Life. Done and It's Over move on to next week. Not like when we had the whole Off-Season with a Call not going our way that might cost us a Flag Last Year

Threw and ducked several times.

We really need a quick small shut down guy. These zippy little players do my head in. Always run amok against us.

JT is Very Overrated on this Board

He can be invisible all game and then bob up in the 3rd or 4th for a goal and everyone acts like he made a real contribution on the day.

Maybe it was too early to call for him to be dropped after Round 2, but we're at Round 6 now and he's still been a non-contributer every week.

Let him find some form in the VFL and bring in Wills, Daicos or whoever else isn't getting rewarded for playing well in magoos.

Apparently the only iffy decisions from the game worth reviewing went against Essendon. :drunk: Surely they (On The Couch) could've at least had a look at the key moments with Grundy and Langdon to even it up just a little.

I checked the AFL website.

No, still has Collingwood listed as winners.

I’ll check again tomorrow just in case; need to be sure so I can be confident with my footy tipping for round 7.

My highlight was the umpiring by the way...…..never made it on the list.......what a shame for the sooks.

You should probably do some research before putting Daicos in the selection frame. He was non-existent in the VFL this week, and unlike Thomas, who played forward, he was playing in the mid field, so he really has no excuse for going missing.

A few things from my perspective:

- The booing. I’m with Bevo and think it’s a bit of a laugh. I mean who didn’t look at those Bombers fans during the presentation and laugh? That said good on Bucks for going into bat for his man. It’s little acts and moments like those that are beginning to define this group which is something to be proud of.

- The negativity of this thread. I’m not getting it? That was far from our best, but the thing is the best teams rarely allow you to have it on your terms for long periods and Essendon are a good team. They remind me a lot of us 12 months ago.

- Missed set shots. We all remember that game last October unfortunately? Well the result was a carbon copy with the better team on the day able to eke out a win. The tables were turned this time. Big difference was that because it’s a H&A match and there’s next week to play out the criticism rises. The opportunities were there for us to smash it open and unfortunately we blew three guilt edged opportunities in the third plus had a fourth denied by a bees...

- The reality is we held them to 69 points, had 3 more scoring shots and overcame a -18 clearance differential after 1/4 time with Daniher going off. Essendon blew chances as well, but they cashed in on three big set shots (Stringer x 2 and Daniher) that on any other day they may have turned into one or two goals at best.

- The umpiring was good. I only had the Cox one against Hooker and the Baguley one against Langdon as iffy one’s.

- On individuals. Obviously Pendles is the standout, but special mentions from me go to Maynard and Roughead. Maynard copped a lot on Thursday and he battled through it very well after a poor showing v Brisbane. Roughead took Brown completely out of it, big tick. Although the next step for him is to offer more support to Moore when he’s being outplayed. Also what’s with the criticism of Beamer? The blokes allowed one off game and I’m tipping it was a bit of an emotional let down after the game in Brisbane. We’re asking him to do a lot of heavy lifting ATM as the main inside mid and he needs more support, IMO.

I really want to highlight the negativity again because it’s completely unjustified. We’re 4-2 with a % over 120 and have hit the sweet spot only twice this year. There is little benefit in being on top of the ground in April as long as we’re building. I personally saw nothing to suggest we aren’t working towards our best when it matters...

Great post. You make lots of really good points. I got to admit that I was quite furious at the way we played, and I think the difference between my attitude and yours is that I dont rate Essendon as highly as you. Now dont get me wrong, ball in hand they are an exciting team to watch, one of the quickest teams I've seen. Their ball movement, their run and gun game style is terrific. I wouldn't surprise me if they make the 8, but it would shock me if they made top 4 or did any damage in September. Unfortunately for them, ball in hand is only 1/3 of the game of footy. The other 2/3 of the game the ball is in dispute, or they have to defend. At these aspects of the game, I really dont rate Essendon. They aren't good at the contested stuff (and that's why they haven't won a final in some time). Their ruck is a battler, and whilst their midfield looks great in time and space, they dont have any genuine hard nut inside midfielders. Defensively, they always let you play.

We lost the clearances to a team with a relatively weak ruck and devoid of inside grunt. For me that is quite an indictment and it really pointing to a significant problem for us. We need Sier...

I think that this points to some of the shortcomings of reading too much into clearance numbers, because Essendon have actually posted some decent clearance numbers this season (e.g. they won the clearances against GWS even though they played deplorably, they won the clearances against St Kilda but lost the game etc.).

Very enjoyable post to read.

I think the negativity comes from the expectation that we were going to continue 2019 with the vein of form that we found late 2018. The return of Elliot and Beams amplified that expectation to a certain degree.

I agree with you that we're tracking very well at the moment. I'll go further and say that barring disaster we should feature prominently during the business end of the season.

That's a valid point, are we ranking the midfield function too heavily on clearance stats? I'd say yes and no. No in the sense that superiority in stoppages signifies greater opportunity to control the play and to create advantage; it's clearly important.

It's an isolated view of what's going on though, and winning clearances won't get you 4 points. So far this year we have functioned very effectively in transition and have been able to limit the opposition from hurting us in the same manner.

I’ve been grappling with how to articulate my thoughts on where we sit and the best I can offer is that we aren’t Collingwood of 2011 that will romp through the season. In 2019 no ones like that now the competition has bedded down from GWS and GC coming in.

I’m in no way comparing the two teams, but I feel we’re more like a Brisbane of 01-04. Like us they were beatable, it was just a mighty challenge, they never finished on top of the ladder and more often than not they got the job done during the H&A season. Their record through those years was 64-1-23 so a 73% win rate and since we got going in round 8 last year we’re 17-7 at 71%. All you need is 15 wins and a % over 130 and you’re top 4 which almost guarantees us two MCG finals prior to the GF.

Can we bring it together come finals? IDK. What I do know is that teeth gnashing over wins is hard to trawl through especially when with a bit of luck we could have been a game clear on top of the ladder considering we had Geelong under control for much of that match.

I’m not too concerned with the clearances because neither are the club and I don’t think the correlation between clearance dominance and wins is all that strong. One thing I’d like to clarify is that after 1/4 time Essendon were very good in all three phases.

Offensively they moved the ball well, Daniher was on song, Baguley jumped up out of nowhere and Stringer looked menacing. They managed the +18 clearance differential because they were simply better when the ball was in dispute and they would have owned us in the contested ball. Defensively they really shut out a lot of our movement forward of centre with Hooker, Ambrose and Saad in particular having fantastic defensive games. What that has me wondering is whether it was us off our game? Is that their standard in 2019? And was that their absolute best shot at us?

My gut feel is the latter. They are a top 8 side that threw everything at us and we still walked away with the points despite not being at our absolute best. We left 25 points out there with 4 bad set shot misses and Stephenson’s getting touched on the line. Good signs for both!
