We won't win for a while now. Players confidence will be shot and Port will be fired up.

Well at a minimum we won't win next weekend.

Couple of points:

1: What do people want Buckley to realistically say in the press conferences? After every loss I hear him say a variation of "we weren't good enough" and people on here react as if he tried to blame the transit of Venus over the Tropic of Capricorn for the loss. This forum seems to want him to publicly flog every single player as well as every staffer in the club before committing hara kiri. This would help precisely nothing.

2: Stop losing your shit over giving up 20 odd point leads. This isn't the 90s any more, it happens twice a round now and every team is guilty of it at some point. No-ones happy about it happening to us but don't act as if it somehow means we are a hopeless case.

Easy answer say our players are butchers (we all saw it) and say the umpires are cheats (we all saw it).....case closed!

I haven't read this thread yet, I'm sure other more insightful posters have made this point before me, and I haven't checked the stats - but our defence was back to being God awful for large parts of this game. And that is so disappointing, given how hard we have worked to stop our leaky defence. And - we missed Goldy badly!

Really am struggling to care anymore. This game is a perfect example of what is broken about this sport.

The umpiring has hit a stage now for me where I no longer can remain invested. We did not lose because of umpiring.

The issue lies with the fact that at any contest you can pick up a "technically correct" free kick for both teams. The then pay or dont pay this depending on the position on the ground, the time of the match and whatever individual interpretation the 1 of 3 umpires have.

They then get directions from the AFL each week to change the interpretation. Then each year rules are added.

It is impossible to correctly umpire this sport and is becoming impossible to watch without frustration. Every time that whistle blows all player look up to see why. Because they dont know where the free kick is going or if it is even one.

I cant watch anymore. Not the way I used to.

When I talked to older people about footy and they said they dont follow it anymore it blew my mind. Now I understand.

In the end it was a coin flip and we struggled with the shorter break. It was a coin flip like every single umpiring decision is.

I dont feel this way after watching any other sport. Never so confused or frustrated. In its quest to becoming bigger the game is looking more and more like an amateur sport.

I agree regarding the grey interpretations by the umpires, which today affected the result.

During the 2nd quarter when the team was flying it was exhilarating to watch. Feeling rather flat about the result and can't help thinking the officials played their part nicely. It's feels almost WWE level ridiculous.

Dont blame umpiring.. .we were 4 goals ahead at 1/2 time and controlling the game...we panicked after that

This notion that umpires don't influence the outcome of games is absurd! So if the ump had plucked a decision out of his backside and awarded Greenwood a free rather than penalize him and we won the game, are you saying Melbourne would have no grounds for complaint?

Mids didn't work hard enough, I think pretty harsh on our defence overall (bar Tom Langdon & Josh Smith).

Put Reid Varcoe and Goldy there might be a different story

Its heart breaking after a loss to be so perplexed at the umpiring. And to then be told that your observations are unjustified and afl umpiring just fine. Bull####. Too many games are being influenced from umpiring. You should be upset.

They are Destroying the AFL.

Rather watch the VFL as they have good umps

Out played when it counted ,lack of will to roll up the sleeves when it was time to get our hands dirty.
Congrats to Melbourne clearly the better team in the second half and Howe what a mark.

Do we get a congrats for clearly being the better team in the first half?

Well said.
The days of 30 point leads meaning game over are long gone.
That said we should have locked it out a bit better.

Really missed Elliot today.

Aalso this idea the coach should bag everyone and the thinking that will get wins is beyond ridiculous.
I'll put it down to jagged feelings post game loss.

I actually think we've improved this year (yes improved!)
We are competitive each game.
In next year or so we might get all the experience needed into players like maynard, de Goey, Scharenberg, Grundy, Langdon et al.

Looking at the Didaka votes and I see Grundy's name popping up by nearly everyone.
It's official. I have no idea about football.
He is the most overrated player on our list.
His tap work is woeful and he has zero hurt factor.
Yeah he may get a lot of it around the ground but he does zero damage.
There I said it.

Oh and Adams and Smith. WTF guys.

On a positive note I still think we will make finals.

Taylor Adams disposal is killing us. Literally he is costing us goals due to his poor DE.
He was 35-40m out directly in front last week against Freo had the chance to put us either in front or create a one goal buffer and he never looked like kicking the goal. This week his kick across goal resulted in a dees goal and the start of the momentum change.
Greenwood missed another crunch goal from a set shot to get us back in front and missed.

I kind off gave him some votes by default, due to slim pickings otherwise.

He actually killed our momentum twice today in the second quarter with his slow decision making and subsequent backwards kicking.

Why is it that in international football (soccer) a manager/coach can voice their opinion or disappointment at a referee decision yet in AFL a coach can't even whisper a negative remark after a game? A bad decision by an ump should be called out so they can learn and fix the problem. Dees were clearly advantaged multiple times today with very questionable decisions... the worst part was sitting behind the goals next to our cheer squad and having to watch the Dees players mock our supporters with smart a55 hand gestures and comments after the siren.

Not sure what the deal with Adams kicking is. He doesn't seem to have worked on it because the same issues (bad ball drop, tries to over kick the ball) are present each time he coughs it up. He needs to tidy it up because he wins a fair amount of the ball in the back half which is where we like to bring it into the corridor from. I love his around the ground efforts and I wish some of our other players gave the effort he does, but he probably had a hand in 2-3 Melbourne goals in that 2nd quarter today which kept them in the hunt.
