In fairness 18 of those players for West Coast were in the last 20 or so years when 200 gamers became far more common in footy, and it just so happened to coincide with the 20 or so years when Melbourne were mostly terrible.

Never said I was on the right, and even if I were, Jeff Kennett isn't a spokesperson for my opinion .

I have nothing against Sam being appointed in terms of skills, I am just surprised she would actually take a nothing figurehead role to represent the crown. But I guess for half a million a year to do nothing , it gets hard to turn down.

They were abhorrent across the board. AFL Have a real problem with their talent pool in the umpiring ranks. The inability to stay in line with the way their peers are adjudicating the game in any given game across 4 qtrs is deplorable. We shot ourselves in the foot though yesterday not the umpires make no mistake about that.

This was always going to be the case when they (stupidly) decided to go with 4 umpires. I mean the ground's not 500 meters long and we often see two field umpires only 30 meters apart. Talent pool is not large enough to field that many umpires.

Absolutely agree that free kick counts don't necessarily reflect quality or fairness in the umpiring.* Also I don't think there should be any assumption that free kick counts should finish about even.

My mistake to link to unrelated topics. I don't have much to say about the quality of umpiring. Basically I think it's a tough job, they're gonna make mistakes, I don't buy into the umpires being involved in any conspiracies, I don't think they're biased against certain teams (including us), I don't see the point in whingeing about umpiring. Contrary to what people say I suspect umpiring has improved but our expectations have increased (and our vision of the game has improved) too.

However, it is interesting that year on year the Swans come out at the bottom of the free kick tables and this year is looking like it will be no exception. I don't think we are an especially dirty or ill disciplined team, so I don't think that offers an explanation. I don't know the explanation but, if I'm speculating, I might say that perhaps we are coached to play right to the edge and we have decided that the benefits of doing that outweigh the free kick count going against us.



* There are circumstances where I think you might be tempted to infer a deficit in umpiring just from the free kick count e.g. not a single free kick called all game. Conversely 100 free kicks would also suggest something is going wrong with the adjudication. If it was 25-0 one way I'd also be pretty suss.

That certainly can't be said about the 2016 GF.

Daughter in law's boss called everyone back into the office and son picked up the kids from daycare. Smart on both counts. Not good to be caught out in it. We're snug.

When googling why South Melbourne was called the swans, this came up.
The name stuck, in part due to the club's association with nearby Albert Park and Lake, also known for its swans (although there are no longer any non-native white swans and only black, indigenous swans in the lake). After several years with only limited success, South Melbourne next reached the grand final in 1945.

I think the swans in Albert park lake is a misunderstood reason why we were called the swans. To my knowledge anyway. Ask Bedford, he was probably around 50 at the time.

This has always been horse's weekness. Not adjusting quick enough

I think it's a good thing that it comes now. We have plenty of the season to work out other ways and learn to fight for it. God help us if we coasted through to get smashed in September when the tempo goes up. Last week and today the opposition's pressure rating was elite. Doesn't matter how good they are if they bring that it is hard to win.
Swans have built our club off that and had success..even with less talent.
For those saying some players are big heads. I personally would hate to become low risk dour team.
Players like petracca and other stars , all have had development hiccups.

Hopefully gets us back to hunting the opposition, like we have been hunted the last couple of weeks.

Then in 2022 we adjusted. We'll adjust again.

The problem in 2022 was a lack of depth. We limped into the GF with a young team against the most experienced finals team ever seen. That lack of depth hit us even harder in 2023. I feel we've addressed that now
