Can't say I was specifically addressing or criticising you, sorry if I gave that impression!I don't think it's elitist to say that people not switching on the TV semi-regularly to tune into games aren't supporters that materially impact the club. I also never suggested that they need to buy a membership or attend every game. The mentality of some to suggest that this is the argument being put forward is quite disingenuous.
People who just tune into the GF because they live in NSW and loosely identify as Swans supporters does the club no material benefit. Like, cool, great for them that they enjoy watching one game every so often, and all power to them, but it's meaningless data for the Swans as an organisation unless there's a pathway to convert them into more serious and engaged supporters. Calling that perspective 'elitist' to in some way suggest that just watching the GF 'isn't enough' flies in the face of the whole point.
Would note though that it does help the club. Firstly it gets them revenue when they do each individually show up, secondly it means a steady stream of possible convertees into more serious fandom which no other club has access to. More concretely though, it also helps Sydney have the highest sponsorship revenue in the league. The sheer number of possible eyeballs on Sydney's uniform and games and promotional stuff is attractive to advertisers even if the raw memberships aren't as high as some clubs.
I would also point to our instantly having the highest AFLW crowds and memberships in the league, as another indicator of that potential conversion thing. We are quite likely pulling in serious fans there, who were among the many many people who only ever very casually cared about the men's team.
