Like the idea of Tudor. Got that Geelong background, and Saints 09 background. Knows the club, the players know and respect him. Wise. Seems to have some integrity.

Too soon to tell with Harves as an assistant, let alone as the top-gun. Our forward coach can go to the backline - he's really a backline coach anyway. But if Maxy wants to come home, hell yeah - been fantastic at the Pies, and now Lyon is gone, all may be forgiven.

As I said before, Tudor, with someone like Craig, Rocket, or even Knights tagging along for the ride.

Knights? why? his record at Essendon, Port Adelaide Magpies and Bendigo spells gross underachievement.

Or here is one to consider...Mark Harvey anyone?

He did keep Freo in contention for a while even though half his list was missing

Eade would be an underwhelming appointment for my money - I hope we take a bolder approach and go for someone like Tudor with Harves by his side.

Just heard that Robert Harvey will take over as interim coach.

Im sorry but this is most ridiculous appointment a club has ever made. Why the hell do we need interim coach when we arent playing and all the players are going on holidays :confused::confused::confused:

Someone on Saintsational mentioned it's purely to try and keep the playing group together and somewhat upbeat. He's not actually going to be doing anything but I reckon it's a pretty smart appointment.

List management one would think.

Lots of exciting candidates out there, Im thinking Malthouse is the front runner, he will realise that it's now or never for him as a coach.

Others are Tudor, Sanderson and Bailey. One I would go after in a huge way would be Dermott Brereton.

Was just thinking.

Pelchen was at Port in 04. Would the Saints maybe look at Mark Williams with Dean Bailey as his assistant? Proved a successful combination back in 04.

It's really not, there's a reason why the board were scheduled for a meeting tonight and it has a hell of a lot to do with the fact that AFL clubs are a 24/7 business outside of the glitz and glam of 3 hours a week. Appointing an interim coach in a period where "not much actual work, LOLBBQ?" is the case denotes "status quo" it denotes that the wheels will continue turning and it denotes that it's a temporary position.

What's the difference with guys like Bickley and Viney remaining on as interim coaches just because theirs was during the year? Their players have buggered off on holidays so they must be removed from the role right? since they have nothing to do and all, except be the public face of the playing group, the club, media commitments, sponsor endorsements, other engagements of a social nature...

As much as I admire Harvey as a great player of the club, not sure he's cut out to be a senior coach at this stage.

We need to look at guys like Mark Neeld, Brenton Sanderson or Leigh Tudor who have done solid apprenticeships at successful clubs. Also Adam Simpson who is highly rated as an assistant coach at the Hawks.

I really think we need to take a punt on a younger untried assistant coach rather than go back to an experienced coach like Eade. With any luck we can find someone like Chris Scott who can reinvigorate our team and get us back into the top 4 and challenging for a flag.

Maybe we could even do a Freo and just throw shitloads of cash at Chris Scott when Geelong's season finishes to get him to break his contract and jump ship to St Kilda. Apparently this is the way business is done these days.

From the outside looking in, a cats fans perspective.. I beleive this is a blessing in disguise. You can't go past someone like Brendan Mc Cartney. The best speaker going around and a real players coach.Tore the heart out of the Geelong supporters when Judas Thompson got him to the Dons with a bucket load of money. He started with the cats backline and when that was sorted out he became the centre line coach and fixed that up and then became the go between man from players to the club. The most respected coach by the players.Thompson and Sanderson included. Get him before the Doggies do as it's out of him and Cameron for their job. Best of luck fellas because we have to keep the so called super teams down.

I havent seen Leon Cameron's name mentioned in here. Surely he would be a very good candidate aswell, or are we assuming that he will get the Bulldogs job?

For mine, if we can land Malthouse, then take him (although unsure how he would work with Tiprat). If we cant get him, I'd prefer a current assistant like Cameron, Neeld, Burns, McCartney, Richardson, Tudor.

We don't have a blank chequebook, so I'd prefer an experienced assistant coach - certainly not a narcissist media personality - who gets to have a strong team of people around him (because we can afford it).

Tudor must have an advantage if the players liked him (haven't really heard anything in this regard), but there are quite a few good ones around who just need a shot - just like our last coach.

Not sure that Malthouse is the be all and the end all.
Difference is , at StKilda if they want to spend the money on "X" and "X" turns out not to give the result you want , you live with it.
At Collingwood if "X" is no good you buy "Y"
Also how many assistant Coaches do they have.
How much would a Malthouse cost, taking into consideration that we've just posted a loss.

Last time round we set up a selection process that seemed to work pretty well and gave us a promising young coach. I dont have issues with doing the same thing, and assistant coaches will often chuck in their contracts if you offer them a senior position.

While Lyon was good, there were chinks there, some of which were probably addressed by the club, with the appointment of Pelchen. Youth development seemed to take a backseat. His team selection seemed overly conservative, and sometimes downright peculiar. He didnt seem to communicate all that well with some of the players and maybe even the assistant coaches.
I think Lyon was on the right track, and we certainly dont want to be overly reactive and recruit the "Antilion", but we can now try to adress some of the weak points.

Greg Denham says Mark Williams is the man to coach StKilda.... So we now know Mark Williams will not be coaching StKilda.......

I dont mind if Harvey is in charge of the pre-season.
Focus on Skills and Fitness - he can do it blindfolded.
Gives time to go through a proper process for selection of a replacement.

Pelchen will be in charge of trades and drafts and no doubt will rely heavily on input from the assistant coaches, of which Harvey and King probably understand the capabilities of the players the most.
His difficulty will be in trying to guess the needs of a new coach. But in general our list shortcomings arent too bad.

The big question, do Westaway and co want to tank and rebuild, or soldier on?

Greg Denham said on SEN that the Saints will go after Choco Williams. Which means the Saints won't go after Choco Williams.

Nevertheless, thoughts? I've always considered him a class A tosser b/c of the 2004 GF aftermath, which arguably set the rot in down at Alberton. Nevertheless, he can obviously coach.

Edit: Sorry AussieT. Missed your post.

Reckon you guys should at the very least least give Gary Ayres an interview, done amazing things with his VFL side, seams to have improved as a coach, might wan't to keep him away from list development though as his record in that area is poor, could do a lot worse IMO and he would come cheap allowing you to put more into other areas of your football department, IMO he could keep your window open that little bit longer.

On Malthouse, though I said we should go after him last night, I've always maintained that he has had a free hit by coaching at cashed-up Collingwood, where their sports science is what really put them ahead of the curve. And before that he was at WC where he won a premiership with another cashed up club. And before that he was at piss-poor Footscray, where he did not win a premiership.

So, in the clear light of morning, no Malthouse.
