Potential compensation for Ablett

Judd was I think 3 years younger when he moved to Carlton than what Ablett will be if he decides to move to GC.

I reckon that sort of compensation is fair. If it is indeed valid for 5 more years it gives you the ability to pick up a couple of very handy players.

I wonder when we would take the option up? Would you do it straight away while your premiership window was still open or delay it for a couple of years in order to rebuild and take advantage of the non-compromised drafts?

I would wait. I reckon even without Ablett we have enough talent coming through to remain a power for a little while.

Kennedy hadn't set the world on fire and Fevola was still playing well, and Pick 20...what's another to a team that had No 1 three times consecutively?

Absolutely. I think if Ablett does leave we need to be realistic as to the compensation we are likely to receive. I reckon this proposal has struck a reasonable balance. Two first rounders should return you in todays landscape two 100 to 150 game plus players if you draft well. I reckon for a 27 year old champion that is fair compensation.

hopefully he'll stay and none of this will matter, but at least the compensation is reasonable if he goes.

it also means that at some point in the next few years we'll have three first round draft picks. if we can time it and use it in a draft with a strong first round it could be the start of building towards our next premiership dynasty

This is only for the 'top tier of talent', though, the absolute elite of the game. Given that no-one in Ablett's company - say, Judd, Hodge or Riewoldt - is out of contract I don't think there will be any similar compensation.

The AFL have adjusted the compensation not just because of us and Ablett. Considering our form in recent years at the top , I doubt many clubs would be crying about us losing a player. Then on top of that , Gary being a FS still gets under some peoples skin , some think we should getting way less than this.
No doubt , the recent Newspapers speculation on Martin has helped us , it made the AFL factor in what GC are willing to pay , not just what they are currently getting paid.The AFL have also kept in mind that this type of comp will be used for Free Agency comp from 2012.

What are the picks really worth? As I understand it , 1st Round compensation picks can't be used till the 2012 draft. Most clubs would prefer to use comp picks in a projected deep draft , look at the difference between 2001 and 2003 and it becomes obvious why. Then how many clubs gain picks ,how many nominate in the same year , where they finish on the ladder all effect the value. Its all very vague.

One thing is for certain they will be worth far more to a side in "bottom out" mode than one in contention. The closer you are to the bottom of the ladder the less influence other clubs picks have on the value of your compensation picks.

Imagine the 2012 draft , imagines its as good as 2001,2006. All the clubs who have gained draft picks have nominated at the start of the year and lets say there 5 R1 picks.

Compare - one side who finishes last , another finishes 4th
P1 , P2 and P11 sounds far better than P11 , P19, P20

With that in mind If a side like Adelaide or Port Adelaide are planing to clean their list out and play kids the next couple of years then our picks will be far more attractive to them than they are to us.

My bet is this extra pick gained if Gary goes , give us a much better chance of getting a player like Boak or Dangerfield.

I think the picks themselves will be tradeable, but it's a question of whether a club would be willing to accept picks from us that they can't immediately use.

In regards to when we would use them if we kept them, for me the most logical year would be whichever year is the year we no longer have milburn, wojo, moons, ottens, scarlett, chappy, ling and boris (i.e. they've all retired). I'm guessing that to be 2013 or 2014.

As much as it won't benefit my club, I think you blokes should get pick 5-10ish and probably another pick in the range of 20 - 30 for Gazza. The current system is clearly flawed if we can pick him up for a mid 20's pick.

Mate thanks for the sentiment but you will pick him up for nothing. Zip. Nada. The AFL give a pick you don't give of any sort. Not only that , every pick given to everyone for compensation then pushs all the normal picks further out. Now considering how many kids you already have , how many you will get with draft , it might have been a lot fairer if the AFL had given you some picks purely for trading. But this wouldn't really create what the AFL are after.

That would be it for me, losing Gary Ablett, and in return, getting a pick. 25, it's a disgrace, Ablett is arguably the best in the AFL, if he goes, we should get something GOOD for it !!.
