Been watching the NRL all stars game online and they have 5min power plays

Power Play
- Each team will receive one (1) optional power play in each half of the match.
- Once a team captain nominates to the match referee that they wish to use their power play for the half at a stoppage in play (Changeover, scrum, penalty etc), the opposition team must immediately drop two (2) players from the field of play for a 5 minute period (11 players on the field of play).
- If the team who called the power play scores a try during this period, the power play will end immediately and the two players who left the field may return.
- Players returning to the field of play must do so under the supervision of the interchange official.
- The team defending the power play will make the decision which two players leave the field from their team during the power play.
- Once a power play has been called, the opposition team may not call their power play at the same time. If both teams call a power play at the same time, the team about to receive possession will be granted the power play.
- A second clock will appear on the scoreboard showing the time period for the power play.

could we see something like this in AFL for nab cup games ?

-Seems to be more fun to watch

The first round of the nab cup is a Gimmick , so whats it matter what rules they have? surely one more rule wouldn't hurt

This is real video game stuff, but here are a few suggestions:

1. You get to nominate a player from the opposition that must leave the field for 10 minutes.

2. Opposition is not allowed to have a ruckman at the bounce or throw ups around the ground, for 5 mins

3. Each mark is automatically shifted 20m closer to goal for a 5 minute period.

4. All interchange players (except sub) are allowed onto the ground for a five minute burst

5. Buddy is not allowed to be double teamed for 5 minutes

6. instead of a kick out from the goal line it's taken from the centre square, for five minutes.

7. Opposition touches it over the boundary - intentional or not - free kick

8. All behinds are counted as goals for a two minute period.

Oh man this could be fun.

Please no.

The game is good enough not to need gimmicks like this and the nine pointer. The game could be better with improvement in the way it is umpired (not necessarily the umpires fault, just some confusing rules which dilute the spectacle), but can we just keep it simple? Sports thrive on simplicity.

some good ones there :D bring it in to the video AFL game

Would essentially mean watching one team flood for 5 minutes. Only way to strategise against an opposition power play is to drop number into defence and essentially give up on any attacking in those 5 minutes.

Would be very boring

The only NRL rule I could see coming into the AFL is the send off.

If a player gets reported on the day (not that it ever happens anymore) he goes to the sin bin/bench for 5 mins of game time + stoppage time.

The only issue is if an ump reports someone on the spot for a hit ala Buddy on Cousins. The crowd would go nuts if Buddy got sent off for that haha.

As for the OP - no thanks

Free Agent Madness ... for five minutes, each captain nominates one of the opposition players to change sides.

Oh yeah, and I vote for Multiball as well.

And the umpires should be able to mark the ball any time it is kicked to them.

This.

People seem to assume giving a side numerical advantage would make the game more attacking. What's more likely to happen is one team is under siege, in which they respond by flooding/parking the bus. Attacking play is ensured by both teams attacking ergo, opening up spaces for attacking.

An NHL sinbin would be cool for trouble making players. Also yellow and red cards! Maybe even a golden snitch( a pig spray painted gold could suffice):thumbsu:

For 5 minutes one of the following:

  • An off-side rule will apply to one team.

  • One team can score goals at either end.

  • A mark within scoring range will allow a team to keep
kicking from the mark and scoring goals until they miss.

  • If a team has a set shot for goal they can nominate any
member of the opposing team to take the shot. If the
nominated opposition player fails to score a goal with the
shot, 12 points are deducted from their team's current score.

  • A judging panel will give each goal scored a 'degree of difficulty' weighting for extra points.

At set times during the match the opposing captains would have a coin toss. The winner getting to choose which of the above would apply for 5 minutes - or they could be randomly chosen.

If it hits the post and goes through for a goal it's still worth 6 points.

Also; Goal tending. I'm sick of defenders touching the ball when it is so close to being a goal. If it's going in you either mark it or get out of the way :p Also the goals should be extended to the behind posts and the behind posts will be removed. Four goal posts and thats it. All worth 6 points. More goals = Better.

Player goals are cumulative eg - Milne's first goal is worth 6 points. His next goal is worth 12. 3rd for the day is worth 18. Mean a 5 goal haul from one player is worth 90 points to the team.

Fans always yell "Why don't you just kick it for him ump!?!" and I think they should. Every free kick that an umpire pays has to be taken BY said umpire. If the kick is deemed ineffective by Champion Data he will lose 10% of his match payment.

At the start of the game each team names it's starting 18. The rest of the players (3 bench and a sub each) are then chosen from the rest of the players on both teams lists - school yard style. Puts an end to people sooking about a lack of depth if their captain has a chance to pick the oppositions 19th best player :thumbsu:

"Power Plays in AFL"

Well that's one way of putting it. I suppose most of their supporters would like to think they compete in the AFL, but you're probably more correct. ;)

If they AFL need a rule in for the NAB cup and want to **** around with things, how about remove wingers from the field of play, those 2 positions are now added to a substitute bench.
Now you have 2 less players on the field, but a bench of 6. Can only interchange those players once per quarter. However, at the start of each quarter the teams can change and 6 different players can be on the bench. Rules reset. Means we have more space on the wings, more (theoretically) pack marking, and a maximum of 24 substitutions per match.

There are rules to make the match entertaining and rules to protect the player. But apart from this you can do about everything you could do without rules. Really like this nativeness of the games. No more strange rules...

Double this.

Check out some NHL power plays. Basically the defenders form a ring around the goal and the attackers pass the puck around trying to get one of the defenders out of postion, so they can have a shot.

The only excitement happens when one of the attackers nods off from sheer boredom and misses the puck and a defender shoots through for a breakaway - but that's rare.
