who saw it today? what are everyones thoughts?
most impressive IMO was playfair who probably beat harley at CHF.

discuss..

H, Kel, Ottens and Byrnes were the best for me.

Very impressed with H, just worried about his kicking.

Speaking of which, Kent was very disappointing.

How did some of the newbies like Egan & Prismall go ?

I didn't see either much. Spencer was the first choice key defender for the second string defensive group.

It's amazing how diametrically opposed opinions can be on a game. I suppose it all depends on what one values in a player.

Personally, Corey Enright, Jarad Rooke and Kane Tenace were the standouts for me.

James Kelly, Cameron Ling, Matty Scarlett et al were always going to put in solid performances. James Kelly, yeah okay, coming back from injury there might be some doubt. But he's a quality player and showed it today.

It could have been that I haven't seen Enright in a while, and he had such an interrupted season in 04, that i was very impressed. It seemed to me, that Enright has eradicated his 'floaters' and lackadasical kicking style of just banging it on the boot. On top of that, managed to kick a couple of goals.

Kane Tenace won a lot of the footy. Ran with it and had plausible disposal on the run. But, for christ's sake, get rid of the locks.

Jarad Rooke, wasn't an outstanding player by any stretch of the imagination (there wasn't really a clear standout player, genuine overall performance) but did some nice things. Ran back with the flight of the ball, okay disposal and took a fair few marks. Drifted forward, which i thought was good to see.

I thought all of the rookies showed something, if only a glimpse. Garth (great goal), Sheringham and Batchelor. All looked very solid, competent players to me. Especially Garth, who is very physically mature for his age, and taller than I expected.

For those obsessed with hyperbolae and Nathan, he did okay. Kicked a goal, moved quite well and looked alright. Has his dad's legs for sure. I can see why people say he looks 'raw' despite being 3 times bigger than me. His arms could do with some developing.

The disappointments? Definitely Mr Mackie. We've said it before, we'll continue to say it, but it really is a problem. Put some weight on, son. I'm amazed somebody like Lonergan, who evidently was a stick last season, can put on weight, yet his best mate at the club cannot. He needs to down a kilo of protein powder a day, if you ask me. Josh Hunt played on him for a large portion of the game, and seriously, i thought it was for comic relief. The coaching staff pulling our legs lining up the strongest and bulkiest guy at the club next to the stick insect.

Kent Kingsley continues to miss easy set shots. His confidence is still shot. When i arrived and took my seat in the Ford Stand, Kent took a mark on the lead (which he did a lot, i might add) about 35metres from goal, decent again, and he passed it off to Chappy! Absurd.

Brad Ottens. Now, i know i'm probably notorious for rebuking the trade, and it's probably getting tiresome, but i've got a different angle today ;) He wasn't great. Phat, i don't know where you were sitting, or what it was that you saw in his game to put him as one of the most impressive players, but he didn't do an awful lot, IMO. Kicked a goal, took a ripping mark at the end (on Scarlett) and hit the post from a rather acute angle (though it was definitely a possibility) after taking a decent sliding mark. I mean, he didn't seem to have much of a presence to me. Didn't really make any second efforts, didn't leap for the ball. But yeah, it's only an intraclub match, and he was on the best FB in the business for pretty much the whole game.

Prismall looks okay, didn't notice Egan.

Overall, a good day getting my jumper signed etc...

And showed a bit.

Although, i was most impressed with Garth when he played on him. But Spencer will probably get a game in the Wizard Cup. Especially if S.Johnson, King and Mooney sit out, like they did today.

My major worry with Spencer is his lack of mobility. Has a huge turning arc, something which will be exploited at the highest level.

Good summary, thanks mate. Wasn't able to get there so this really helped to fill me in.

Didn't really make any second efforts

Did you miss the one where he was behind Scarlett at CHF, punched the ball, dived on it ferociously then got up and fed out a superb handball to a player running towards goal?

202cm players don't do that often.

His diving effort against Ling early on (near the Brownlow Stand) was also first class.

He didn't take a lot of marks but i can't see how you can criticise his seconds efforts which were superb for a man of his size (if Kent put that much effort in he'd be an excellent contributor).

Each to their own though Seb.

I missed the effort against Lingy near the Brownlow Stand. Saw the first incident however.

I mean, he wasn't spectacular, but he was solid. Didn't do much, though. I mean, we can all highlight little features of the game, like when the ball was coming into the Ford Stand end, Ottens had a clear jump at it, and just stood there.

Like i said, I guess we look for different things in players; and as you said, each to their own.

No problems, mate.

Being a first year Uni student, i have plenty of time on my hands.

Just come off the Cat's Claw, I heard that KK had a pretty horrible game. Did he play FF? Thoughts?

To be fair, he only played a half (of magic).

He got a lot of the footy on searching leads and in general play, but it was the same old story, couldn't find the big sticks.

He played a sort of FF/CHF/Flank role.

Like i said, one of the most disappointing aspects of the game was when he marked it, on a 45 degree angle, 35 metres out, and passed it to Chappy 30 metres out.

Confidence shot, absolutely shot.

Ill add a little more :p

H lookes to be the CHF we need

Ling got the ball with ease. Would of had to of had 30 touches

Enright was supberb

Tenace is looking good

Byrnes was also good

Out of our rookes Garth looks the best. Hes already built which is awsome

Bartel and Kelly were great again.

Corey wasnt seen much. He gave away a 100m penalty right at the start

Ottens looked good when he was up forward

Kingsley was ******** again. What FF passes when he is within 30m?

Nathan Ablett was also very good

Umm I didnt think Kent had a dreadful game as many people are indicating, his kicking was poor yes, but he was pushed up the ground more and wouldve had 10+ disposals in the first half of the game.

Lonergan also impressed me he had fair share of his ball at CHF and probably deserves a crack in the WIZ cup along with Spencer, who's mobility actually surpised me Phat, he may have improved over summer.

H was the best thing to come out the game. pLaying on Harley one of the best and strongest CHB's in the caper and he had the better of him, and bar some inaccurate goal kicking wouldve been BOG, which I think wouldve gone to enright.

Mackie was a big dissapointment for mine, and it may have cost him a few places in the pecking order behind the likes of Henry Lonergan and even Garth, who showed hes no slouch an the field.

Ottens went ok, shaitan will tell you I was pumping him up a bit but he did setup a few goals and as far as his second efforts go he needs to produce them more consistently, some wee good others were atorcious. He was probably involved in 3-4 goals and to do that on Scarlett was a good effort.

Got there to see most of the second half.Have to say it was difficult picking up some of the players, mostly the new guys I suppose, in the generic tops. Question , who was the big kid with the flowing blonde locks in the silvers playing Ford stand end in the last.Looks interesting, a bit lost but interesting.Big boned and given a bit of time to grow into his body could be a player. Has Prismall taken over the spiky hair do as well as the jumper from Beemer, if so kicked a nice set shot in the last Q.Ling to me was doing it on a bit, even looks stronger across the shoulders,How was the guy with the black "Krusty" hair do Eagn or Tenace, if Tenace he has been snorting the protein stuff.Nice to see kelly out and about again.Byrnes will burn in the Wizard , he's really trying to make his mark but mostly I thought most of the seniors were going 1/2 to 3/4 pace doing enough to show a bit her or there remind everyone, if anyones forgotten, what they have to offer. Pretty good crowd for the a scratch match.
