Pre Season Draft clarification

I've seen a few people's comments over a couple of different threads suggesting that we should use the PSD to pick up some of the players that weren't drafted in the ND.
I'm a bit confused as to why we would do that? (Although picking them up on the rookie list makes sense).

What i dont understand is why, if the club intended to draft one of these young players in the PSD they wouldn't have just drafted them with the ND pick that they passed on? The only reason i could think of would be that they have some uncontracted player in mind, and that they want to hedge their bets, keep the pick until they know wheather there target has been taken.

Does anyone have some insight?

Ch. 10 news last night reported that they are trailing a young guy from Pt Melbourne. Also the reported rookies that they intend to take down to their camp at Strath.

My guess is they either intend to pick up one of these or an experienced player overlooked like a Wowowowoden.

When you get down to pick 64 or whatever it was, you're probably looking at 5-10 players you would draft or put on the rookied list. So why not take a breath, run a training camp, take a closer look and make your choice after that.

I think we passed in the ND so we can have one more look before we decide who to draft and who to rookie.

I wouldn't object to taking a recycled player who suits our needs, but I don't think there's any quality in that department this year.

IIRC, last time we used a PSD pick was when we selected Trent Hentschel. I can't remember any uncontracted players we've picked up in the PSD other than Ladhams and Shane Ellen, but we've had some good picks with untried players - Goodwin, Hentschel, Vardy, Edwards.

Only joking. Seriously though, can someone tell me why Essendon and Collingwood would even consider him let alone fight over him. I just don't understand why. The guys will be 31 in 06 and let's be honest both clubs are miles away from the "top up" stage???

Scott Camporeale's wish of continuing his distinguished career at Essendon is beginning to look shaky after Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse admitted on Tuesday the Pies definitely had room in their salary cap for the former Carlton vice-captain.

Camporeale, a member of the Blues' last premiership side in 1995, has ended his 233 game career with Carlton and wants to play for Essendon in 2006.

It is believed the 30-year-old has already agreed to a lucrative two year contract with the Bombers, who have pick four in December's pre-season draft, but the Magpies have pick two and could snap up the classy midfielder before the Bombers.

With Carlton committed to Brisbane ruckman Dylan McLaren at pick one and Hawthorn expected to take former Port and St Kilda forward Brent Guerra at pick three, only the Magpies stand between Camporeale and a place at Windy Hill and it is widely thought his financial demands would price the Magpies out of the race to sign him.


But Malthouse scoffed at that suggestion on Tuesday saying the Magpies were definitely interested in the 2000 All-Australian.

"I think he is a wonderful player and let’s not get fooled for one moment into believing what we read in the papers suggesting Collingwood can't afford him and they (Essendon) will outprice us," Malthouse said.

"Let me tell you we have got plenty of room in our salary cap for players."

Malthouse added it did not bother him that Camporeale had his heart set on playing for Essendon.

"That's the luck of the draw. This is the draft - it's not who you want to play for."

"Any player with class is going to add to your list and Scott Camporeale is a class player."

With Carlton already having allocated its first pick to McLaren, the Pies now effectively have the first "live" pick in the pre-season draft - adding to the intrigue over Camporeale.

Yeah that makes sense. It does sound as though they have a particular player in mind.

Fantasia's quote from the Advertiser today:
"We're well-placed because some clubs already have full lists," he said. "We're assuming there won't be too many (clubs) participating in the pre-season draft, perhaps just seven or eight (players chosen), which would give us a genuine chance of getting the player we want."

Who do you think it would be? Must be a recycled player (as we've said if they were keen on a young guy they could have just drafted him in the ND), but who? I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be Spanderman.... I just cant think of who else with Logan likely to go to port.
