Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Whats with the umpires thread on the MB?

I was tearing my hair out in the first three quarters and thought that it evened up somewhat in the last, however not nearly enough to say we had the rub of the green.

Hodge is a flopper and Rioli throws the arms and head back at the slightest touch. Play on.

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

So wow.
I'm not sure how we pulled that one off, but I'm glad when the time came we stood up and got back into it.

We CANNOT afford a display like the first half next week though. Playing four quarters has been our biggest weakness all year and it is now the one and only time we absolutely MUST step up.

Jolly is also a big out, and I hope the others are OK to play.

However, I know we can take it to anyone and everyone on our day and we've got the equal record to shoot for. We CAN go back-to-back, but just wishing ain't gonna make it so.

This. I thought we were robbed for three quarters and finally got some lucky calls our way in the last.

But what I find most interesting is the 15 other clubs are getting in on it, most Hawks fans seem to agree it was their bad kicking more so than umpires that lost it for them.

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Was a strange game structurally tonight. Why Malthouse allowed them to have a spare man in defence for the vast majority of the match was mind boggling. They were just able to set up so well because of it and repel so many of our forward thrusts. Whereas ours up the other end was largely ineffectual.

Even if it left us with 7 on 7 in our forward line it still would have made the ball movement on the rebound that little bit more difficult and it would have cut down so much of the intercept marking.

Also where was the run on from a mark that has been such a feature of our game this year? In the past month I'd say our percentage of play-on directly after a mark has been cut in half and it just exacerbates the issue of the opposition having a spare man because of such slow ball movement.

Will take the win and look ahead because it all matters for little now! I'd expect us to get out of it with a reasonably clean bill of health with Jolly being the only one in grave doubt.

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Whilst I share your enthusiasm re: Tarrant in general (and he was huge vs. the Eagles), there really weren't very many one-out contests with Franklin tonight (maybe 7 or so?) and Franklin ended with 3 goals out of them, plus a goal assist. Arsey they may have been, but that's his style.

7 or so one out contests inside the 50 is a pretty sizeable number. In contrast I can't remember Cloke or Dawes having a single one-out contest inside our 50 (although that is probably more due to our ball movement than anything else).

He got that one goal after Tarrant beat him in the air and the ball flicked back off Rioli's boot, seriously unlucky and probably nothing else he could've done. And I don't think he could've done anything differently with the goal from the boundary either.

I really didn't think he put a foot wrong tonight.

How good was Jolly tonight? And Leroy was even better :rolleyes::rolleyes:

If Wood does not game a game next week I'LL SPEW UP.

Nice sig though.

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Whoever said Hawthorn were unlucky missing so many shots on goal, what about all the failed attempts to even get a shot on goal by the Pies? SO many times the ball should have been kicked for a score only to fumble it and turn it over. We probably should have had 5-10 more shots on goal than we did. We messed it up a lot and didn't take our chances. Luckily we did enough.

As for the umpiring it was pathetic all night. We had a bit of a run late in the game but overall it was consistently very poor and I thought it ended up being fairly even, it's just people look at the last qtr only because it was close.

I actually thought Jolly was doing pretty well before he limped off. But overall his form has been down so playing Wood if we need to won't be a huge difference, although Ottens will probably towel him up.

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Dane Swan is the best player in the competition, absolutely no doubting that. Proven performer in finals and will go down as one of the finest to wear the Magpie jumper. Somehow though, Clokey is our most important player. That last quarter, I can say, was Wayne Carey like.

Truly superb.

No , Jolly was getting humiliated by a guy who had 20 knee reckos and the guy who no one wanted. Enough of pussy-footing around, Jolly's form has been well below par over the last few months. And don't even mention Leroy to me.

PS. What the **** is it with Beams and the finals???? How can his form drop off so much as the pressure goes up???

I thought Jolly was outstanding in the first quarter... when not many others were. If he improves next week great... if he's fit to play:(

Couldn't have said it better myself. And then there's Luke Ball. Three of them in the last were unbelievable!

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Pretty good, probably one of our best in the first half.

Awesome, Jolly apparently was one of our best in the worst half we've played all year. He managed to achieve that fit by being even worse than he's been for the last 6 months.

Fanbois will be fanbois I guess.

That's really strange criticism considering Jolly bested Bailey in marks, possessions, hit outs, I50's, clearances and he made an impact on the scoreboard. Jolly had the better of that duel as Bailey had very limited influence on the game. Brown was opposed to Hale for the majority of the time the two were on the ball so I don't really understand the negativity towards Jolly in that regard.

Especially when the Hawks won more hit-outs from 3rd man ups for the night than either of their ruckmen could compile (17 v 15 and 16), which was done specifically to negate Jolly's influence! And despite all that we still won the clearances 39-34.....

As for Beams I don't believe any of us have the foggiest as to what the go is with that!

Re: Prelim Final - Collingwood vs Hawthorn - Post Match Discussion

Jolly was much better than what Wood would have been in a game like that. I like Cameron, but in a game like that, he would have been completely exposed. Does open up a few headaches if Jolly isn't right to go next week.

I reckon it's desire.

The siren went and there was vision of the bench celebrating while Beams had a rye smile on his face but showed absolutely no emotion.

He may have just been really pissed at the performance he put out but still, you're in a Grand Final. Get up!!!

It could possibly be the smile of someone who realises they may have just played themselves out of a Grand Final.

I'm pretty disappointed with the role he's been forced to play in the 2 finals so far though. He was dead set on fire coming in to the finals series and since then he would have been lucky to have had 10 minutes in the midfield!

Tonight was a classic example. He had his 2 handballs in the first quarter yet he was left to rot up on the forward line for the next two quarters. MM could have at least given him a run in the midfield (even if he may not have deserved it) just to break the shackles. Overall I don't think it was Mick's best coaching performance tonight, but I just hope he gives Beamsy one more crack to atone.

We'll have to disagree on that one then because Bailey certainly didn't beat him. Look at the stats and Jolly beats Bailey in possessions, hit outs, goals, marks... the difference is Bailey had Hale rucking with him, Jolly had Brown who was a spud. I know you're on Jolly's case and have been begging for him to be dropped for weeks, the problem is Wood isn't exactly a superstar this year either.

You can sugarcoat it as much as you like, you can make as many excuses as you want but Jolly would not be getting a game for our club for the last few months if his name wasn't Jolly. Shows how desperate you people are when you attribute Hale's influence solely to him being opposed to Brown.
Cameron Wood got dropped at the time he was our inform ruckman and yes, I'm mad about it.
Wood plays against the Eagles, we win by 5/6 goals, Wood plays tonight instead of Leroy, we win by 3/4 goals. Good luck trying to change my opinion using facts and not "Mick knows better, Jolly's been good in the finals last year" party lines.

As for Beams I don't believe any of us have the foggiest as to what the go is with that!
If someone finds the key to this puzzle we'll have a more than 40% chance of winning the Flag.

Nah mate, I haven't been on Jolly's case for weeks as you say, I've actually been on Wood's case for weeks. When it comes to Jolly I simply like to call spade a spade. My first priority to get dropped for the Eagles game was Leroy, am I justified?
Fact of the matter is Wood has been our best ruck option over the last two months and he's the one who's not playing.

Well personally I don't think you are calling a spade a spade but I'll leave it at that. Unless Jolly can recover quickly he'll be out of the side, and thankfully it hasn't cost us a spot in the GF.
