Rovers defeated Mordialloc by a point with quite a few still missing due to cricket.
A very young Ormond defeated D1 side Yarra Valley by about 11 goals and will play Monbulk this week.
Anymore ?

Monash has played Mhsob and Garfield in praccy games and beaten both. Great new renovation of the social rooms ready for round 1 action.

It probably appears that way cos Holdsworth took the league from a basket case to good league in a short period of time.
Cannizzo is a great administrator & has maintained Wayne's good work plus brought in new ideas to get the brand out there without bringing in any new teams

I would say that sides like Dingley and C Heights in the SFL would be Mid-range Prem C standard, and East Brighton and ST Pauls would be top 3 Prem C or bottom half Prem B sides. The problem the SFL has is after that, the standard drops away pretty sharply. The bottom 2 sides like Heatherton and East Malvern would be Div 2 VAFA sides, and ok ones at that. We continually see sides jump up(or down) 1 or 2 grades in the Ammo's, almost NEVER see that in the SFL.
Also have to take into account if a side like St Pauls or East B or Dingley went into the Ammo's, how many blokes would stay for no pay.....very few I would imagine....

Dingley flogged Oakleigh Krushers on the weekend, last week Chelt beat Werribee Districts (B Grade last year).

Yes our comp isn't as strong as others' but the top teams in Div 1 (EB, St Pauls, Dingley, Chelt) would be very strong C Grade teams, middle of the road B Grade. Bottom end would be D1 or so.

I reckon Dingley would have Orm covered but as Bedford says nobody knows, At least Super has SEN both and is certainly qualified but,it is all just an opinion. I agree with the evaluation that East B and St Pauls would be equal to middle B grade VAFA. I reckon St Kilda City at the best in the late 2000's would have been equal to mid A Grade. But SFL does drop away very quickly - quite right.
Re: Admin and I know a little about this as I deal with most leagues as a supplier, The SFL has been clearly better over the past 5 years. Processes they put in were better than most leagues by a mile in terms of governance, they lead the way in racial vilification education, inclusion, women, sanctions, they were the first to negotiate a deal with Kooga, now most leagues use them, they even have a 12 team netball comp to get more women involved. Yes Holsworth/Barnes did most of the heavy lifting and saved the league then turned it around, since they left things seemed to have stalled but they are still in front of all leagues including Ammos with Admin, they are prompt with payment always call back, engage suppliers etc etc. Don't forget Holsworth booted out the Doveton club for the coach's abuse of umpires, they were not frightened either to make the hard calls. Did he go back to the AFL?

This is how much you know as Oakleigh played Airport West on the weekend
Apologies Bedford, got my weeks mixed up. They played Oakleigh on the 15th.

I don't know for a fact that they are a better side than Ormond, to do that they would have to play each other. I'm basing it on the fact that Ormond were 2nd in D1 last year and Oakleigh were mid table in C Grade.

I for one am very realistic in terms of where the SFL sits compared with other competitions. However, some of the external assessments IMO are a touch harsh and misguided.

I tend to agree with your assessment there Super. Always a fair and balanced contributor. I say this all the time but very difficult to draw a form line from practice games and equally as dangerous to use them as a basis to compare competitions. Werribee were near the bottom of ‘B’grade last year and my recollection was they would be playing ‘C’ grade in 2014 if they remained in the Ammos. On the flip side PEGS, who are fairly entrenched in C grade ran Balwyn (who with Old Xavs are the strongest metro club in Melbourne) to within 8 goals or so. I would not have tipped them to get within 25 goals!

Oakleigh Krushers in some strife this year. Looked certainties to get relegated to D1 for much of last year but managed to survive. They have had some departures so would not be taking too much from that. I beleive the Krushers lost there other practice game by about 20 goals.

Based on my (limited) knowledge of Ormond and Oakleigh and the off season ins and outs I think Ormond would have therm covered but I guess time will tell.

SFL is shocking. Gone down the shitter since noble and balwyn left.
Disagree entirely. It was once a comp with a mountain of debt on the verge of going under. It is now a viable comp. Agree it's the weakest of the metro comps and is a pale imitation of the VAFA in terms of team quality but it's not shocking either.

lol mate the league is shit.

The top 6 would be ok but then it falls away to some absolute shit clubs
It's nowhere near our standard. However, for a comp that was on its knees a few years ago the work people like Holdsworth and Barnes have done to breathe life into it so it's now viable is a credit to them.

St Pauls were getting waaaaaay better crowds than Haileybury when OH were playing at McKinnon.

Whats that got to do with what I put
1. It's a stronger comp than most here give it credit for.
2. It runs way deeper than half a dozen clubs.
3. It's generally well run now.
4. They have been adding clubs to the comp over recent years as distinct from previous years.
5. Most clubs are viable.
6. The general standard of football is waaaaay better than it was only a few years ago.

I agree totally with AM. I am also tipping both AM, Fish and Super have seen a few games of SFL in recent years to comment as I have, Bedford how many games have you seen in the past 3 years? If you have been team manager for the past few years at Orm Im tipping you have not seen many, if any.
It does drop away after the first half dozen in each divvy but that could be said for most district leagues.

The premier in each division is usually the team spending the most money in the SFL.
Yes that is true Beacon, St Pauls, East Brighton, Dingley have lots of coin to throw at Players and they are now the successful teams, but they don't seem to have the network that old school boy clubs have in the VAFA that can offer work and accommodation to possible recruits, many would argue that that is an "inducement" which technically is outside amateur status.

It will be interesting to see how the VAFA go against the EFL this week end I reckon the VAFA might have a win, Essendon will beat NFL and the Southern league will beat WRFL.

VAFA will get rolled. EFL got a great coach in charge, champion forward line and champion backline. Names get you games in the VAFA.
