Just want to pick up on this along with the VAFA announcement that all VAFA staff are working from home.

Return affiliation fees asap. VAFA promised financial details just on a week ago. Nothing. VAFA now tells us contact staff by mobile/email. As a courtesy I would think putting the appropriate mobiles on the website would be mandatory so club officials can ring? Failed to do so.

Several comments here that need answering now. Who is paying for the entire staff to work from home? Does anyone seriously believe that there is anything to do currently for the football operations, full time media communications CEO etc. The VAFA Board needs to lead and lay off staff so that Clubs can survive.

THE EYE

:(
Are you seriously suggesting the CEO is not required at this time?

If you hadn't noticed it is serious times. Every other league has reluctantly laid off staff. Afl and AFL clubs have today. You are kidding yourself if you think the $ to pay the full time staff isn't going to effect all VAFA clubs. Currently a waste of club money. Clubs are paying right now and what are they receiving? Zero

Where did I suggest standing down non essential staff wasn't an economically prudent move?

Now perhaps you'll address your nonsensical suggestion as to why you'd stand down the CEO of a large community sporting orginisation at this time of crisis. Care to list the major sporting organisations who have stood down their CEO at this critical time while you're at it?

Open your f***ing eye man.

A vast majority of CEOs have taken pay cuts or gone on reduced hours. Due to social distancing They can't attend meetings etc. No announcements from VAFA. Last posts are media ones with a goal from Williamstown, and a skob with a guitar! Your funds at work doing a rehash to justify time from home. Do you think VAFA coaches are still putting their hands out?

Suggesting he leads from the front and acts now. Your club is paying for staff who unfortunately have no current season/functions to arrange. Trying ringing other leagues and some have gone into almost complete recess.

Waffle! Waffle!

You said the CEO should stand down. I've asked you to name another significant sporting organisation where that has occurred during this crisis. Still waiting.

We are all to aware of sporting organisations whose CEOs have taken pay cuts. Coaches too. Do you know for sure that Brett hasn't done so? Another question for you to avoid.

I'm confident the VAFA is following others in looking at ways of cutting it's cloth to suit the purse, so to speak. If for no other reason than clubs will be insisting on it. And I'm confident they will be looking at ways of sustaining the organisation post this horrendous period. No easy task.

The pressure on the movers-n-shakers everywhere must be burdensome in the extreme. Having someone on a forum potting them with dopey suggestions like standing down the CEO at a critical time is, to say the least, unhelpful.

I did lump them together as a way to save $$. I'm unsure of any other sporting CEO that has been laid off. Plenty reducing pay and/or hours. Laid off, reduced hours whatever to stop the VAFA $$$ leak needs to be addressed. There is little to do currently for most staff. NRL has intimated staff shedding, VFL teams have reluctantly reduced staff. Their organisations have to do so to survive. No I don't know whether the CEO has taken a paycut and neither do you. An announcement would settle that.

Perhaps you can tell me A M why the VAFA 8 days on after the Board Meeting is still to advise the VAFA Community of the points that the CEO stated clearly on the VAFA Website would be available within 12 hours [Midday a week ago]. They have failed to advise of how the financial impact will be apportioned. I think all clubs would be interested in whether they will still be charged an affiliation fee [or %]. Even an interim statement from the Board Meeting would suffice.

I think I have answered your 2 questions so just one for you. Do you think that the VAFA staff should be restructured to save $$$?

You specified the CEO as one who should go. That was my issue. Standing down the CEO in these unprecedented circumstances would be a folly. Which is probably why you can't stipulate any other sporting body who has done it.

I said at the outset non essential staff should be stood down. For all I know that has occurred or is in the process of occurring. If not, it should happen. I'm sure the clubs will be insisting on it if there are no plans in place at present.

I have no particular insight as to why the matter raised in your 2nd para hasn't been addressed. I do know we are going through extremely burdensome and unprecedented times and the VAFA isn't the only sporting body having issues dealing with them. Don't think it's unreasonable to cut them some slack.

Nor do I have sufficient knowledge to form a view as to whether the place is organisationally super efficient. If you have suggestions as to how the place could be improved organisationally why not put them to the President when the tumult dies down.

Good common ground.

Just want clubs to realise that there is approx $15k going out the door a week and we will be the ones to find it as usual. The forum where clubs would have voiced their opinions [members meeting] was rightly cancelled. VAFA has not put anything in its place, survey or chat room whatever asking for opinions. Board has not canvassed clubs. Be warned clubs will be asked to carry the load because of full staffing which is unnecessary. Nothing happening.

According to Paul Amy, Xavs U19s B & F winner Ben Hart off to Frankston .

Paul Amy always gets the good mail, so well done to Zac Hart, his father is former Adelaide champion Ben Hart.

I doubt he will play football at Frankston or even at Old Xavs this year though with what is currently going on in the world.

Strange thought, but after all this is over I think 2021 may be the start of the strongest vafa era ever. Due to the virus, work has never been more sought after. I imagine a lot of vfl and local comps wont be overflowing with cash. A jobs network will be most valuable and I'm tipping we could see an influx of a lot of good players

It could go either way in that sense, businesses may have to tighten their belts so there may be less jobs for the boys.
With the economy potentially entering a recession, a small positive would be that it may bring a halt to the arms race for ex-AFL/VFL players and in turn reducing the pressure on volunteers etc.
Interesting times..

I'm with you BlueJet, my experience says some of these jobs the players get are temporary whilst they are playing footy and able to be offered during the good time.
The good times have disappeared and will not be around for a couple of years.
My prediction for the immediate future..... Several mergers. Could be VAFA Clubs (Unlikley A, B or C Clubs) but lower grades and Suburban Clubs.
Depending whether we get any games played do coaches get a % of pay? Assistant coaches and fitness staff who may still be providing training plans for players to do on their own will want % of pay. Does the Club have the funds with Sponsors not coughing up due to no games? No subs from players etc etc

Could be an interesting off season before the season even gets off the ground.

My opinion, there will be NO FOOTY this year.

Please keep the conversation going because l am going bonkers inside these 4 walls.

Thoughts?
Probably better in the general discussion thread.

Forget the promotion and relegation, how do the finances work?
Are Club and VAFA Sponsors paying up ? Will full affiliation fees be charged to the Clubs? Will players pay their subs?
If the AFL are fearful that some Clubs could go broke if there is less than 17 games how are Ammo Clubs going to survive if there are fewer or no games?

Plenty of financial questions to answer before worrying about who goes up or down.

l doubt there will be a VAFA game played in 2020.

Excuse my naivity, but if the VAFA is an ammos comp and no player payments occur, coaches would be stood down without pay, grounds controlled by councils or schools.. What are the actual operating costs to clubs if the season did not proceed.

Some expenses will have already been occurred during the pre-season. Equipment, medical supplies, payment to medical staff, club merchandise ordered but which remains unsold etc. Perhaps even a pro-rata payment to the coaches based on time in the role until the lockdown kicked in. While not confirmed, I also understand that clubs have already been stung for some VAFA affiliation instalments. These costs might ordinarily be covered by memberships, season launches, bar sales etc. Not sure how clubs would stand with council fees but would not expect too many favours.

Obviously VAFA clubs much better placed than the paying comps who have probably already forked out for sign on fees etc. It will still bite but to some lesser extent.

Glen Eira council is not charging with no play. Clubs have to pay coaches for pre seasons , buy medical , jumpers etc

good post. A lot lesser extent imo.

My prediction is that we will not play a game in 2020. The AFL can play "lock out" footy to satisfy their broadcasting contracts.
How can the VAFA allow spectators to stand around a boundary to support their team....that would constitute a Bondi beach scenario. It wont be allowed.....
