how does one say this.
THIS IS A DEFENSIVE ANOMALY .Dusty rarely has big defensive games and if anything it has been area that has required work and still requires work.
The bloke doesnt have many weaknesses but the defensive side of the game is one part where he can significantly improve.
Dusty's defensive game more than offsets his defensive weaknesses.

of all our mids he would have the lowest percentage of tackles a game and hes not big on chasing opponents either. reckon only B Ellis and McIntosh would be behind him in this.

I suppose this will get blown up out of proportion because your not supposed to criticise club champions.

I agree with almost everything you say.

I've even been foolish enough to call Martin a "liability" in the past, when I was jacked off with his lack of defensive efforts - especially at centre bounces. But as I think you were trying to say, his attacking game more than offsets his defensive weaknesses. I was wrong to use the word "liability", but the defensive side of his game has plenty of room for improvement. (Aerial game too, IMO).

But it's no anomaly. Check out Nim's post giving the pressure points from 2017. Dusty had a higher average than Nank, Edwards, Grigg, Townsend, Miles, Caddy, Castagna and Conca.

I don't doubt he would be in the bottom few in 2016, worse again in 2015 and so on.

What I'm saying is that I reckon Martin gets more involved with the footy when his also more involved defensively. His not a player who gives us either defence or attack.

Kinda the opposite of players who have a great game with the footy but a poor game defensively (BEllis in 2016), or a ripping defensive game that means they don't get many possessions (Graham).

This year he sits 17th with an average of about 14
Last year he was 9th for the team with an average around 17

He's not a strong defensive player at the best of times but he's certainly not a poor one either. He hasn't shown it this year, but when he has, he's generally had better offensive games. Hence why since his R12 rest he's averaged 20 pressure acts per game, and it's been pretty widely observed this has been when he's started to come closer to his 2017 form. I'm not sure how you can disagree with the conclusion that his offensive performance has a positive correlation with his defensive performance

I think with Dusty it's the times when he doesn't apply pressure bc he thinks his teammate will do it and he can get on the end of a cheapie and do damage.
It looks magic when it works, but ugly when it doesn't. He needs to probably pick his moments better and respect the opposition more bc last week there were some ugly moments.

dusty is our most damaging player, my spin on it is he gut runs for a few minutes playing as a genuine mid trying to attack then gets buggered so signals to graham/conca/cellis/kmac/higgo to take/eyeball his man while he rests in a set sneaky position ready to be a seagull or block a corridor/leading lane... as TI mentioned it can look terrible but if martin and castanze kick beautifully we would have flogged GWS.

No special comments today. Was a shit game defensively cause Saints never had the ball.

Looking at the data, get Conca and Graham, of course, back in and our pressure will improve quite a bit.

The Saints game as a bit of a nothing burger. Get cracking next week I would guess.

Team brought a lot of pressure against the pies. But after Caddy there is a big drop.

I reckon if we get Graham and maybe Conca back the Pies midfield will not have much room in any rematch. Then that are toast.

Four of our top 10 defensive players missing and we still turn on the best defensive performance of the year. What a machine.

Cotch equals Graham's all-time high. Hasn't had a 20 touch game in over a month? Who gives a stuff?
Great effort especially with 2 of the top 3 out.

Much more even performance. But looking at our outs, damn we can be much better in doing what we do. That's something that most commentators and fans of other clubs don't appreciate. Graham doesn't get a lot of possessions. But he is important to our midfield functioning. Conca likewise, but differently. Prestia is just a gun.

And Cotch!!! All hail the King:thumbsu::thumbsu::rainbow::rainbow:

Funnily enough when Conca and Graham are out. Wonder if he has taken it on himself to be that defensive leader and is exhausting himself.

Some of the efforts he put in vs Geelong were massive. He never gave up a few times on Danger and forced him to miscue.

arguably the most important stats in football

I reckon you're spot on. Reckon his set himself the job of applying the blowtorch around the contest, with Graham, Conca and now Prestia out.

Cotch's last month of footy would be right up with his best, for me. Maybe some parallels with Riewoldt finding different ways to contribute by picking up slack in the team's overall performance.

C.Scott wouldn't know what hit him if they were all in

Given that Geelong smashed us in the center and did nothing much anywhere else, I reckon that those 3 back in would mean the end of Geelong as any threat. What Scott would do is probably explode. It'd almost be worth having a camera on him full itme in the bottom corner of the screen - just for the laughs. :p

Thanks for all this work... NimFromSudan...
Love Cotch and his mighty efforts of late...just hoping his 'beast mode' does not wear him out before he makes the GF...
Really need another bull mid to take up that grunt work so cotch can pick and choose his moments to errupt and cause mayhem...
I dont want to see one of the finest players i've seen in my life time battered and bruised and/or injured having to retire early...
Love 'Mr Momentum Changer' and want to see him play more years yet! :thumbsu::):thumbsu:

That's Graham's job, with Prestia and Conca helping out. Reckon we have been playing with a fair chink in our armor for a little while. To play our best we have to stop clean ball movement by opposition from contests. We've been down 2 or 3 of our best in that role. Bring them back (couple anyway) and we're much better at controlling the game. It'll be interesting to see if we ease Graham back in via the AFL or VFL - suspect that it's about the same for degree of difficulty. Prestia is straight back in.

When people are drawing up their best22 they always make their choice between Conca and B.Ellis as to who stays in, this isn't the right choice. Conca stays in everyday of the week just for the pressure he puts on the opposition around the ground, up until a week ago (after missing a month) he was still 2nd on our tackle count, Conca's in our best 22, its really a choice between BEllis and Houli.

Conca is physically unreliable though.
Imagine playing a final and losing Conca early with a hammie? Oh wait.
Whereas Brando is a physically fit beast and runs hard all game. He’ll be there until the end. I don’t trust Conca physically as well as his poor disposal he can be a time bomb.

One positive to take from Conca's latest injury woes...this time his body did not fail him because he pushed himself too hard...it was holding up remarkably well all things considered...with what he has had gone through previously...
This time it was a tangle of bodies with oppo falling on him causing an ankle dislocation! Still an injury woe...but not a breakdown...small comfort for us long suffering Conca fans!
I don't think Concs can avoid injury cos he's always playing in the heat of the battle...just see JGraham!

If we're picking sides on durability Prestia's not getting a game, I get your point, Ellis will be playing finals, he's the first one in if theres any injury

Prestia actually plays games out though once he’s on the park. Conca can go awol anytime and any place. We miss Prestia badly atm , but do we really miss Reece? Ellis and Prestia are proven premiership players , whilst Conca has a poor finals record mainly due to injuries.
