You have to use ur extra speed bursts when running in space with a defender chasing u..once u hold R1 in space tap the direction u are heading to twice (while still holding R1) and your player will get an extra speed burst, however it does make it harder to stop of course!

If you are trying to speed into an angle, hold R1 and while making the turn into the angle press the direction (say diagonally left) let go of R1 quickly press R2. This will make the player, play the ball slightly forward and hopefully u can retrieve the ball before the chasing or covering defender gets it.

Hope that made sense.

yeah i actually tried doing that, but it made no difference. i get speed bursts, but it's like the AI can run faster when it needs to - very FIFAish which is disappointing.

and the keepers are absolute rubbish. they hardly ever hold shots, and if they parry them, it's almost always directly into the path of an opposition player.

i find the game pretty frustrating atm, but it's certainly satisfying when you actually score.

im playing it on ***** mode now and i do much better than when i was trying to play on *** mode.

Ive kicked some corkers .. might fraps some up and make a video of them all :p

love the game .. most fun ive had playing single player.:)

RIGHT...have finally bought the game after starting the thread some time ago.
Great game, as good as expected.
All I've done so far is play one International Tournament as Australia.
What I want to know is what mode do you guys prefer?
I don't know if I can be bothered changing all the names of players and teams and stuff needed to play in a premier league competition or somthing similar.
What does everyone here do?
Cheers,
Scotty

but bugger editing the players/teams yourself. check this out. 52mb patch that updates everything for you. and adds new teams as well i think.

actually, there's plenty of other downloads here that might interest people.

especially an italian 'super patch' which adds all the serie a teams/players/kits etc.

there's some sites there that you should find useful

if you have it on console, i think there's some posts in this thread that explain how to edit teams/players/kits etc. easily enough.

You gotta play Master League, promotion & relegation, tranfers etc.. You just gotta!

Thought I'd drag this one up again to see how people are going with the greatest game ever made. Ever.

My ML squad is looking awesome now - we have stormed through the group stages of the WEFA Cup and will face Real Madrid in the quarters. Not so impressive in the League, sitting 3rd after 8 games.

I decided to try and train up Pilinek (one of the young strikers). Started him every game, was hopeless and probably cost me a couple of wins. Anyway, got him up to 99 on 3 or 4 attributes and he finally scored. All of a sudden, I couldn't add any more points more him! Not happy, thought you could do it all of his first season.

My current team, playing 3-5-2 is:

Kahn
Campbell- Cannavaro - Roberto Carlos
Roy Keane - Effenberg
Nedved - Giggs
Maradona
Eusebio - Gullit

Just bought Gullit as I need someone who can head the ball well. Had Ronaldo and he was a gun but too expensive and injury prone. My bench is very strong, Figo, George Best, Okocha, Virota, Kilbane, Riise, Ballack, Dida and Lee Chung Soo.

Still haven't scored a better goal than Dida's 90th minute equaliser I reckon! Maradona is a gun, can dribble his way though any defence and hits some cracking volleys.

I don't play with any old players, my side playing 3-4-3 is;

A youngster that i've trained up to the best keeper around, think his name is Leibnitz or something similar.

Defence - Nesta, Canavaro, Walter Samuel.

Midfield - Beckham, Mendieta, Maussapant(another youngster), Giggs

Forwards - Kewell, Van Niistelrooy, and myself (who happens to be quite a fine player as well:D )

Subs include Rivaldo, Valeron and some no names.

Still saving and building a squad, which is difficult with the wages I pay:D

Haven't been playing regularly enough lately.

Still the best soccer game I've played.

Youth players seem so hard to measure up to the pro's you can build them up in a few areas, but mine never seem to make the grade. Defenders can be turned into handy squad players by my strikers are all duds.

I blame the recruiting staff! ;)

You may all find this boring, but i'm Arsenal and i just stick with real Arsenal line up and just created youngsters such as Reyes and Clichy to use as backups for the squad... still pretty fun to use the real squad but i'm also currently starting my fantasy team which will have current and legend players too. May take a while though with those signing fees!!

Yep, boring, boring Arsenal! ;)

Scored my best goal ever last night. 2-0 up against Celtic, Effenberg stole the ball about 5 yards in from the byline and 5 yards over halfway (52 metres out to be exact).

Smacked a full power shot - goalie desparately tried to scramble back but it sailed in!

Hey guys!

I'm looking at getting a soccer game for the PS2.

I don't really like the FIFA series... dunno, it's just something about the EA soccer games which I don't like. They tend to be too easy I think.

I'm tossing up between two... Pro Evolution Soccer 3 & This is Football 2004.

Could someone please weigh up the pros and cons for me and which would be the best to get?

Also, I hear PES3 doesn't have any licencing in the game? What sort of limitations does this create? Are there any real players? real leagues? real teams?

Also, what game modes are there on PES3?

Without a doubt you have to go PES3, This is one of the best games EVER made fullstop. It is one of the most realistic games out there at the moment. Many times my controller was chucked at the screen in frustration. Thats what makes this game so good, you dont get any of these 20-0 score lines, every goal actually means something.

It is a fantastic game but it isnt faultless.

Im reaching the midway part of my 4th season. In my second and third season I won the championship on ** level. I tried *** level at the begining of my 3rd season and wasnt good enough so reverted back to 2 star to gain more confidence and more money to buy better players.

My current first team is:

Buffon
Ashley Cole - Ferdinand - Babayaro - Riise
Milner ----- Tarnat
----- Materazzi -----
Angel - Adriano - Wright-Phillips

The other squad members I use regularly are: Hyypia, Robert (usually up forward), Gerrard, Dunant (youngster striker whos fantastic), Rooney, Harte, Pagliuca and Cudicini

The other squad members are Bakke, Gallardo, Bierhoff (had some success with him but is too slow), Geanux and Butt (goal keeper).

Am playing the entire 4th season in *** level and its bloody difficult, even tho ive done surprisingly well. In the league im currently 6 wins 4 draws 1 loss. Im into the quarters of the WEFA Championships as well.

3 Star level does raise a few questions from me. The gap from 2 star to 3 star is huge. In 2 Star you can run with the ball, get in good positions for good shots and is generally a little easy. I had a lot of success with the long ball in 2 star level.

3 star has forced me to change the entire way i play the game. Lots of passing and trying to get wide to bring in the cross. Trying to run with the ball is never succesful. The long ball is never succesful. Why? Because no matter who the players are, the computer players are ALWAYS quicker than my guys. Always. Doesnt matter if its the 87th minute, the computer defenders are stuffed and ive brought on my quickest player and put him forward, they still out run them. This annoys me as its unrealistic. It happens in defence as well, altho my defence is great and i rarely let thru more than 1 goal a match. Their forwards get the ball and your defenders run the same pace. Your forwards get the ball and their defendeers outrun you. Im sorry but Ashely Cole should be faster than Duncan Ferguson.

This means a complete change in strategy and how i play. Because of the pace thing and the fact that you just cant get past their defenders using ball skills as they just take it off you, 85% of my goals have come from headers. I try to get wide then cross the ball in. I score probably once out of every 4 times i try this and its my main way of scoring. If the cross is blocked then i score from the corners.

If by chance I do get into a great position to get a legitimate shot on goal their defenders magically find some burst of speed and 9 times out of 10 seem to get some part of the body in the way of the shot. It does mean tho that when i have scored from the foot they have been magical goals that have ended with me jumping up and screaming.

The pace thing is the only thing that bugs me. I guess it doesnt bother me greatly as i still score goals regularly and still win most of the games but its just slightly unrealistic.

I'm currently in my 4th season in the Master League. I've graduated to **** with a fair bit of success - still sitting atop the league and into the QF of the CL and the Cup.

Still, it's much tougher, and every win is precious. I reckon the only reason I'm doing so well is my dream team, which now includes Pele and Beckanbauer as well. These guys have plenty of pace and occasionally a long ball (over the top, L1 plus triangle) comes off.

I'm pretty good from a corner now, I reckon I can score around 40% of the time.

But I tried 4 star as Australia against Turkey and boy it was tough. The first touch and lack of pace made a real difference (even with Brescianos stats suitably boosted and the inclusion of Max Vieri). I think if I can win the title this year in the ML I'll start a league as Australia on 4 star.

What a great game, still scoring different types of goals and having controversial moments. Last week I had a penalty awarded to me as I slide tackled from behind. Despite the ball going in there was no advantage. I preceded to miss the penalty, then allow 10 men Newcastle to beat me!

Yeah theres plenty of controversial moments alright.

Just then i completed probably 2 of the best wins ive had.

First was a come from behind 2-1 win against league leader Liverpool (i was 2nd before the game). They went ahead early thru Owen, I was playing poorly. Won a corner in the 60th minute and scored thru Ferdinand (the best player ive come across if you wanna score corners). Then after some subs, in the 86th minute I won the ball in a contest on one of the flanks, Wright Phillips ran into the box from the tight angle, had a shot which was deflected into the path of sub Bierhoff (who hadnt scored yet this season) who struck a beautiful volley ever so slightly wide of the keeper.

Then just beat Chelsea 4-1 in the most dominating game ive played. Ironically after my I cant score other than headers whinge 3 of those goals were from cracking shots including 2 huge volleys from Rooney outside the box.

I had a disappointing 1-1 draw with Spurs in the league last night, but am 10 points clear still thanks to the other teams all falling over themselves.

I could only manage a 2-2 draw in the 1st leg of my CL game, at home, so I need a big effort in the 2nd leg.

I just bought the game 2day!!!! all you blokes talking about it made me so anxious to play it that i just went and bought on what you guys say about it.

Yo Tige on the title screen you'll see "EDIT MODE" go there & then go to "Edit Team" There is lots to Edit so start with the English League. You can change any team names you like but say in your case the commentators won't call Arsenal by the proper name they'll always be referred to as "North London" by the commentary. Sux but such is life I guess. Some team names can be changed visually as well as the audio.

As for tips there are plenty in this thread but the best tip I could offer is to get a damn good keeper & deadly striker. After that fill your team in with different types of players to suit the very different opponents you'll play.

I made it through to the CL semi finals, with a gutsy 2-1 victory over Hamburg. It was still 1-1 after 82 minutes, but a brilliant run by Beckenbauer saw the ball cut back to Maradona. I scuffed the shot, but fortunately it took a wicked deflection and went in bottom corner!

tige19, a good move to practice is the 1-2. Press L1+X and then triangle just before it gets to the teammate. Can really open up a defence this way.

L1+triangle does a lofted through ball which can cause problems at times.

Try a few different formations too. I use 3-5-2 because I like to have a player sitting just behind the strikers.

But don't be afraid to start on 2 star (1 star is too easy) and work your way up. It's taken me a long time (4 seasons in the Master League) to get to 4 star, and even then I'm only winning cause I have a dream team.
