happy with this. Im not certain this spells the end for clarke. I think hannath could become a forward. Clarke i think is better suited to the ruck position anyway. If anything, i think this may push griffin back a little as clarke has the potential to take his spot as backup ruckman.

Im happy with this selection

Have to agree I'm afraid. We now have five ruckmen in our side. Moller will be developing for a while obviously, but there are now three ruckmen competing for one spot.

As for a Kep replacement... maybe. But Kep is a forward before he's a ruck. None of the other fellas are.

Hannath sounds like an alternative/insurance against Zac leaving to me.
I wouldn't be surprised if RTB wanted Hannath playing as his Kosi at FF. Can see Kep being eased out during 2013 (sad but realistic esp. with his knees). Hannath at FF would hopefully ease up the pressure and restrict any double teams on Pav - and we've seen what happens when Pav is freed up.

Interesting article on AFL.com

somehow can't find the link outside my phone, essentially says he was training with Melbourne when he found out and was lost for words. Says that the coach said they've got bad news and goods news, Neeld said he's going to a good club with good people, and wished him luck.

Quote from him:

"its dissappointing in one respect and exciting in another but that excitement will just take a little time to come"

"Its all a bit surreal at the moment...just...yeah....don't really know at the moment, just trying to get my thoughts together."

Brad Lloyd seems to think that he only has he capacity to play as a ruckman and that will be his preferred position.

JACK HANNATH was in the middle of TIO Stadium training in Darwin with Melbourne when he was told he was heading to Fremantle after being selected in the NAB AFL Pre-Season draft.

The ten minutes that followed was like watching the AFL version of a Big Brother eviction.

As soon as Mark Neeld pulled the group together in the middle of the ground and told them he had good and bad news, Hannath knew his time at the Demons had ended.

Neeld told Hannath he was going to a good club with good people and to make the most of his chance. He then wished him well.

While applause rang out Hannath's mind went into overdrive. He wandered away from the group head in hands, as Melbourne staff and players both consoled him and wished him well.

He spent five minutes hunched on the boundary line wondering about the new direction his life had suddenly taken. David Rodan spotted him, ran over and patted him on the back. Several players followed. He'd clearly impressed.

Hannath's mind was processing the shock. He had spent 10 days at Melbourne and loved every minute of it. His mind was nearly, but not quite, set on the Demons.

"I suppose I was just dwelling on that a bit," Hannath said of his moment of solitude.

He wandered into the changerooms and sat alone with his head in his hands.

The song in the background – Silverchair's 'Tomorrow' – seemed a most appropriate soundtrack to the emotions racing through his mind. Hannath however was oblivious to anything going on around him.

Asked what was running through his head the words came in between deep breaths:

"It's all a bit surreal at the moment…just…yeah…don't really know at the moment. Just trying to get my thoughts together."

He had no idea what his next move would be. His gear was at Melbourne recruiting manager Todd Viney's place. He guessed he had a few missed phone calls but he was yet to check his phone.

All he knew now was that the next few days were going to be more hectic than he had imagined during his sleepless night the night before.

The emotion was still raw but Hannath knew he would embrace his destination.

"It's disappointing in one respect and exciting in another but that excitement will just take a little time to come," Hannath said.

He was then left alone for some more time to contemplate what had just taken place.

Outside the coaches reinforced their respect for Hannath and the way he had approached the chance Melbourne had given him. His reaction just showed how much some people want the chance, Neeld said.

"Fremantle is a good club with good people. We wish him all the best," Neeld said.

Don't normally allow whole articles but this is a beauty

You will like Hannath. And he will be glad to join Freo as his former teamate Spurr is there with you guys. Gets a fair few hitouts for a ruck of his age and size and they will no doubt increase as he gets older and stronger. Powerful around the ground, moves very well and is one of those rucks that prefers to kick it himself rather than handball to a runner. Has a kicking style very similar to Matthew Primus did. Good overhead mark, should play next year if needed.

Somehow manages to look both immovable/strong and nimble/skilled in that highlights package. Also liked hearing of his reaction to the selection - loyalty is a big part of his make up and Melbourne had done a lot for him.

It's ok him being shocked on selection. Simon Black had the same reaction with Brisbane and look how that turned out...

I think people are probably reading a little too much into this pick.

Sandilands probably has two years left at the top level, Moller is at least three years off becoming a regular contributer, Kep has chronic knee problems, and Griff has continually experienced hip problems.

I'd say this was more a considered awareness of our current stocks and their respective deficiencies and limitations than some sort of sign that Clarke is packing his bags. Gee, the off-season paranoia is fun.
