I still remember hearing the trade announced on the news on the radio at the time.

I genuinely thought we were going to be borderline unbeatable when it was first announced. Especially after what we put out in 98/99.

From memory, he sat out most of 99 with a knee injury, it was still a massive coup at the time though as he was seen as a gun young captain and a star CHB. Probably akin to signing like Jacob Weitering or Darcy Moore tbh as the reigning premiers.

The hype around a CHF/CHB combo of Carey & Colbert in the 00' pre-season was fairly insane.

I actually think had he been involved in the 99' flag he would probably have captained North for a period at some stage post-Carey.

I remember the back page of the Herald Sun with Leigh in a North jumper and the headline was 'back to back?' or 'number 5?' along those lines.
Never got near it.

I remember Jack Elliott losing his sh*t about it, implying that there were brown paper bags involved and accusing Ron Joseph of being a spiv.

Some serious pot, kettle, black action going on there.

Well just in case anyone didn't know Colbert is a top quality individual, so if he couldn't put up with Geelong back then, they must really have been a bunch of kents.
