Just watched a replay of the first half again....virtually every goal we get came from Milney in some capacity. He continually broke the lines with his play-on, run and carry and pin-point delivery in the first 45 minutes. Then, the purple patch towards the end of the 2nd was unbelievable.

Milney is elite!
... but has no chance of getting AA this year...

Seriously brothers. Witnessing a victory like that makes it all worthwhile. The pure joy and elation is fantastic. I would give anything in the world for us to experience two more times this year!

Wonderful effort from the Saints. Macca, Sneaky Peakey, Jim Gwilt, Mini all made excellent contributions.

What pleases me the most is that we showed glimpses of our best football, but we still have work to do. I also believe we'll handle the week off better this year, something which is new to Collingwood.

I was so nervous pre game and to come out on top was sensational.

I was nervous, apprehensive and a little dejected before the game BrotherG. Round 22 got to me i think. When added to the quality of the opposition, deep-down i didn't give us a lot of hope (Although, i'm always a little nervous....27 years will do that to you).

p.s. My 2 Geelong buddies were jumping up and down on their seats on level 3 after Lingy's kick. I sat there dejected....looking at the goal umpire who, for some strange reason, didn't give the signal. When 1 of our boys ran back behind the goals to pick up the ball and kick it back to Zac (why did he take the kick?) i was ecstatic!!

My confidence has now returned!!!

As I've tried explaining on the mainboard, :p, Zac took the free kick since it ws downfield free from the Gwilt decision as the infringement happened after disposal. Downfield free's have no yardage attached and is a simple case of "nearest friendly to the ball" to take it, so Zac took it since he was the nearest to Gwilt at the infringement.

I think that only happens when the play is in front of the ball. Otherwise you could infinge behind play and the ball would be taken backwards.

Nope, cause the infringement happened behind play, the infringement is taken where the ball is at that point, as such the person in possession if a friendly player is deemed to be the recipient, if the ball is in dispute the nearest friendly player is picked.

Think of it as infringement happens at Point A, if the ball remains at Point A the infringed will retain position, if the ball moves to Point B then 1 of 2 things happen;

1) If the infringement is "behind play" by a substantial amount (Point A) then possession will be taken by a friendly player where the ball is (eg: 45m forward of play) and this becomes Point B.

2) If the infringement happens "in play" Point A + B are effectively combined as the ball has not vacated the contest and shifted the play.

Point B only comes into the situation when play has moved on, thus after disposal has shifted the play in any significant distance, you'll find something like a sweeping handball backwards, by fractions, will be taken by the recipient as opposed to the infringed despite the handball being slightly backwards.

I thought McQualter had some pretty ordinary disposal at times. Don't know if he had the jitters or what but he was scared to hold the ball, and passed it to the first player he saw, even though they were under a heap of pressure.

was about to post the same thing ....

He needs to think and react quicker when he has the ball. It is quite frustrating when we do get on a run, we push the ball up field quickly, only for it to land in McQualters hands and have him stop , go back over the mark, prop and look for an option. We then lose any momentum they we may of built up.

I think that he may need to just take the game on and keep pushing the ball forward !

Supporting this footy club takes you to some very deep and dark places.

When Ling kicked that goal it's about as low as you can get. I'm glad it only last a few seconds. :)

Just incredibile.

:thumbsu:

Exactly, well said ....

I think a lot of people, have no idea what it is like to support this football club. With so so so many lows over the past 30/40 years it does effect your ability to support them with a clear head at times lol

Are you Jeff Gieschen? When he explains an umpiring decision, I can't understand him either.

It was pure mistake, there was a lot going on.

I can't see that it happened behind the play. The (clear) free kick happened just as he got rid of it.

If the ball was closer to Geelong's goal, they would bring the ball back to where the free kick took place and Gwilt would take it.

I would consider that a typical McQualter "link" move during the year is to Mark the ball as it comes out of the backline, then quickly handball it to our fast running player heading forward. This wasn't happening against Geelong. Maybe the Cats were onto the tactic and were denying our runners space, maybe the bigger ground meant they couldn't move forward as quickly. Either way McQualter needs to be more aware if it isn't working and to find other options.

He is absolutely one of the main hit up forwards outside the F50, but will normally try and squeeze a pass to someone within scoring range (such as the one where he spotted up Kosi who goaled from 50m).

But if the conditions are at all greasy, against Geelong I'd much prefer him to pump it to Roo leading back (rather than forward, as the Geelong defenders have a licence to peel off their man if they can read the kick). I'm surprised so few of our guys can execute a torp. Even Grammy (who is very capable) shanked his only attempt at a barrell.

When the rain falls we often just stick with Plan A (possession and pinpointing passes). A real shame (and not particularly effective), as even though Geelong are good at the clearances we have used the boundary line to good effect in the past. I noticed that Roo and Schneider did have a better understanding of what to do when it rains.

I'm doing some blog posts for the finals, this game is included as a classic.

It may be a bit of a simplistic way of looking at it, but I think Geelong will miss Max Rooke coming up against us.

He is good for a couple of goals of his own, also sets up his fair share. They have been playing Gaz forward as the additional small as I think they realise this is key against us, but if our midfield can get on top, I am not sure this will be a good move for the Cats and he will be missed in the middle.
i miss mysainters
