Stig is there a way to reduce the video quality on video clips on the new afl/clubs website ? I have a slow broadband connection and the new clips keep stopping to the point they are not watchable. I can imagine the improved quality is appreciated by most but in some regional locations its a big step backwards.

Yep, click 'menu' on the list at the bottom player and then 'change quality'.

Stig, i read an article stating that port will spend 17.2m on their FD spend this year yet they are only 14th in the afl. My question is-

Can you find out how much we spend in dollars and where we sit in the league, as we catagorise differently compared to other clubs in our audit results. This is important when the league is considering capping the FD spendings in recent times.

thanks.

You can probably look it up in the financial records.

you will not get a clean answer, because no two clubs calculate these numbers the same way, as it depends upon how they define each expense (we have had this discussion back and forth on the main boards for a few months).

The AFL used to release a comparison table based upon what the clubs tell them, but this hasn't been out for some time.

Closest you get is this report from back in 2011 http://mm.afl.com.au/portals/0/2011/finals/club_funding_presentation_260911.pdf which focuses on the deficiencies in terms of staff numbers rather than dollars spent.

Yes mate im well aware of the latest round of audits hence why i said i just dont want what is said in the figures. I even have the full report but it also doesnt say what we need to know. The fact that Kochy can state that Port will spend 17.2m this year on its FD spend but its 14th in the league tells us that they have to know what all clubs spend or else how can they rank them? I dont particularly care where the money actually goes but would like know what the figures are and where we rank in the league. I dont mind if its not something that they want to state publicly but still would like to know privately and think this is extremely relevant to the current discussion regarding potential FD capping. Are we far off the top clubs or are we well down the list? Who's to know if its not stated? I believe as members we are entitled to know this which is why i ask. Im not asking for the nuclear codes and dont think its a difficult question.

why do you need to know it? Their job is to advise how much they spend in the footy dept (which they have done). Putting the info into a format convenient for comparison with other clubs is not in their brief (although I am a fan of common reporting standards for all clubs, with different structures and ownership arrangements its never going to happen).

Well i guess i just do as im interested in where we stand. Considering its topical at the moment(caps) plus the fact that the club asked us members to contribute to a fund regarding said FD spending et al, IMO its important to know where we stand. Are we still on the low side and can contribute more or are we getting near the top of the tree and this is all we get in terms of funding. Its important when you consider that we sold the idea of being 'great again' and we should be able to ask where it went, in general terms, without it being deliberately misleading in audits.

Im not sure why its ok to criticise the club concerning players, coaching, board members, gameday action etc yet we shrink when we ask simple questions of the club finances. If we acept that different accounting occurs then questions like this, will come up and should be answered. It is a very simple question and in no way proprietary.

Firstly we should spend to get what we need, not to be in the top percentile of clubs. Pies spend a bucket on Arizona, but is that money well spent? Club need to tell us what they need, and projected costs, not how we rank (that's just a pissing contest).

Secondly, the breakdown you want is proprietary. Coaches wages, it packages, recruiting network costs, high performance trainers, medical specialists are all stuff clubs will be reluctant to reveal to the world, but would have to for your comparison (because clubs include part, some, much, most, or all of these under "footy dept" - to compare apples with apples you need to know what's in and out, and that means itemizing individual costs to balance it out). I'd love to know this stuff, but reality is no club will disclose it, even to members.

I whole heartedly agree on the first statement but still would like to know where we stand.Im not saying we should be a top spender. On the second, i NEVER asked for a individual breakdown of the FD spend just the total. Who said anything about itemised, individual aspects of the FD spend. All i asked about was the total amount thats all. On your last point, this is rubbish(for total amounts) considering most clubs state their footy clubs spend, in total dept dollars, and i said Kochy stated that Port will spent 17.2m last year but was 14th in the league. How does he know they were 14th if all the accounting is different. He must equate it somehow. This info is not proprietary, its just accounted differently than nearly every other club.
