Depends how you use the sub

Remember when nicks recalled Curtin and gave him anout 4 mins as sub ?
I hate the sub.

Just go to 22. Four on the bench is plenty. Coaches complain that it hurts them if an injury happens early meaning the other team has an extra player rotating.

I love it when a side with injuries fining that extra to come up and win. In 1993 against Sydney. We lose Maynard then Viska then Robran breaks his leg. Viska comes back on with a sprained ankle and sits in a forward pocket and is also instrumental to our win. They were the days.

We were also down 2 on the bench early in the 97 GF.

Difference being, in those days the bench was hardly used.

Draper is the highest pure midfielder we have ever used a draft pick on. He looked completely at home in the pre-season game against Brisbane and based on that half alone is easily a best 22 player.

Absolutely nothing to be gained by not playing him for a full game round 1. Get him in the side and don't look back.

Usage should resemble what Collingwood did with Daicos in 2023.
He should be an automatic selection... I want to see laird as the sub. He was the worst player on the ground against Brisbane by far.

Once Draper has played 287 games, won two Brownlows, a Norm and three flags I don't think he's going to look back and think "damn I'm really spewing my debut was as the sub at home against the Saints. It's eaten away at me my whole career"
Well, imagine how successful he'd have been without it eating away at him then.

works for me although possibly swap Murray for Worrell - it is a good place to be in
Yep take take too much notice re full back line or half back line , it’s all the same thing . Murray tall defender on dangerous tall and Worrell more licence to intercept and play on different size opponents

Laird deserves a spot over Milera.

He was nowhere near as bad as what some here would have you believe.
Maybe I'm just being hyper vigilant with Laird but with all respect to you, I thought he was the weakest backman against Brisbane. He gets caught HTB too often or is marked against too easily. Other than the Murray TO's, I thought he did the most to hurt our defence and 'play at speed' game plan.
One last thing, watching Laird run through the back of the square at a CBA is madness. We have so many better options for this attacking strategy. Good idea. Wrong player.

I hope I'm wrong and Laird has a great year. His reputation is strong...for now at least. There's a queue of alternatives watching. every

Think we need to put Butts at fullback as he’s a genuine stopper and will let Worrell and MM intercept the ball. Murray and Keane are just to loose as full back and think that’s why we conceded easy goals. I know we can’t have Butts, Murray and Keane in the same team but feel for team cohesion, Butts needs to play!

Can our backline be
Laird Butts Keane
MM Murray Worrell

Not sure it works though

nah that backline is too slow and tall.
We’re going to have good players in the sanfl this year and it will be mainly because they don’t fit, not like previous when nicks wants them there.

They so were. However nostalgia ain’t what it used to be

Just think Keane and Murray are too loose as full backs. Not sure what the solution will be. Agree there will be a lack of run though

That injury report has Keane as test for a mild hip strain, so if he doesn't get up… is King still not playing?

Problem with this idea is you're adding another nothing ball user into a back line which is full of them. Always better to go for a bit more offensive power and just cop an extra goal conceded here or there. Equally, a lot of the cheap goals we concede come from further up the field breaking down.

I think for most part, you use some combination of Murray/Keane/Worrell, probably Murray as an FB, Worrell CHB and Keane as an interceptor. and just let them build chemistry and grow into a cohesive unit.
