Whilst there are 1000’s ‘Best 22’ threads, I am using this as a foundation to talk about something more important in the long term. The type of side we play each week and the direction we are attempting to move the club in, on field.
Drawing inspiration from the other best side thread, which has a lot of productive discussion, and being slightly bored in today’s philosophy lecture I did what I regular do when I have a pen and paper handy; I went about drawing up Richmond strongest side.
FB: P Bowden Thursfeild Meyer
HB: Tambling Polak J Bowden
C: Howat Foley Raines
HF: Pettifer Pattison Johnson
FF: Richo Schultz Brown
OB: Simmonds Deledio Newman
I: Tuck Polo White McGaune
Out: Tivendale, Gaspar, Hall
Make or break: Hyde, Krakouer, Kingsley, Knobel, King (r), Hartigan, Moore, Jackson
Young: Reiwoldt, Hughes, JON, Edwards, Connors, Casserly, Graham (r),
*Cogs = left out
(did I forget anyone?)
It’s a simply philosophy; if we ever are going to win GF’s it is going to be with the highly rated young bridge in the future and not the middle tier players who are proven as not being up to scratch.
It’d rather come 14-12th and get a few spankings along the way if it meant our younger lot get games into them and develop. If we come 9th again, with Wallace playing the ‘not up to it’ mid 20’s, again, I think I shall shed a tear.
The 'out' group must all go, the crapper half of the 'make or break' need to go also (the like of Hyde perhaps can be a deapth player, Knobel won't be allowed to leave unless Graham kicks on and we get a promsing ruckman etc.). One more influx of decent kids is required, and we need to continue to cut the hacks.
The justification for the XXII is sound:
Backline
J Bowden to continue playing his AA role on the beast forwards and killing them the other way. Polak & Thusty 2nd/3rd talls. P Bowden has all the skills/hight/speed to continue to keep doing well in that back pocket role.
The unusual selections are Meyer and Tambling. Two classy, highly rated kids who need to get more of the pill. The have all the attributes needed to kick ass as a modern defender (speed the biggest). Best place to at this stage for themselfs and the team football education wise.
Midfield
Simmonds ruck, Foley center picks its self. After much meditation im prone to agree Deledio needs to step up into the midfield. Time to see how much chop he is. Golden bollocks Howat is suited to the wing. Huge upgrade on Tivendale.
Time for Raines & Newman to step up into the next level. We need Raines keep taking people on and using his pace, but in a role more icentral that'll be more effective. Newman can make it as a midfielder, has both the defensive game and silky skills. Time to move out of a back pocket.
Forward
Johnson tagging the McLoud/Kennely type defender. Our forward line is shocking in regards to defensive pressure. Sugar would add abit of grunt. In the other thread someone said something along the lines of Pattison needs to show something. Is he too clumbersome/unco to make it? Plonk him at CHF and allow him to be a big target. Apparently he has had a decent pre-season and has some size. The new rules should help him @ 2m tall. Schultz in his natural postion in the square and Richo finally being allowed to play as he was destined.
Pine
I like the look of the bench. Polo & White add pace and abit of hardness to the rotations. Tuck has been one of best neally every week for the last 2 seasons, but he just lacks that bit of polish to ever be top class. Off the bench he would make a big impact with his solid frame and hardness. Reminds me of Martin Pike. A few people have been saying McGaune has abit of ticker.
Young, fast future oriented team.
That said; our Round 1 side will look like this;
FB: - Gaspar -
HB: - Hall -
C: Tivendale - -
HF: Hyde - -
FF: Kingsley - -
OB: - - Krakouer
I: - - - Moore
