On another note this whole Peter Roebuck thing has been really, really sad. Police interviewing him on the day he committed suicide is just so suspicious.

Read the article in The Age this morning - says that police came to question him about an alleged sexual assault in a hotel. He was disturbed by that, called a friend (possibly another journo/broadcaster), needed help getting a lawyer and needed to contact the head of the school he funds over there.

Then there's no details and next thing he's fallen off the balcony, with a policeman the only other person in the room.

This whole thing reminds me of Bob Woolmer's death in 2007, and there was talk at the time it was connected to the Pakistani underworld (Woolmer was coaching Pakistan at the time). Conspiracy theorist in me suggests that someone in Pakistan wasn't too pleased with what Peter Roebuck might have said about the jail sentences dished out to match fixers, and he's been offed.

The details will come to us in time though. On the side of levity, the ABC posted a link to a tribute by Harsha Bhogle on Facebook yesterday... and the headline managed to spell both Bhogle and Roebuck wrong.

Roebuck was always very strange.

Certainly a very stern, concise, and somewhat defensive of a man. The stories of his assault charges, I think, signify something a little deeper about the man. There was always something a little 'off' and strange.

The very fact he lived with bare essentials and spoke to almost no one - not even workmates nor family - also raises questions about his mental state throughout his life.

okay so I'm working yesterday at the local restaurant on the beach and look to my right and think, 'hey, that guy looks like Bachar Houli.' anyway I keep working and a guy walks around the cover an I'm like 'I could have sworn that was Reece Conca.' next thing I know, Dustin Martin and his neck tattoos ask for a bottle of water! I was like 'holy s**t I just served Dustin Martin and his neck tattoos!'

Looking at some of the responses, clearly the Perth usage isn't as common?

As for poor old Roebuck, one can only wonder whether the assault charges of a decade ago might have had something to do with this. It's sad for Grandstand, yet another loss to the commentary team. I can only hope that this tragedy is a catalyst for Glenn Mitchell returning, they need him.

Not sure if you guys are old enough to remember Wally Foreman, but he was another legend of footy/cricket commentary, particularly here in the west. Very different circumstances, heart attack while at a gym IIRC.

About an hour ago i was coming home on the bus and I saw this guy who I know lying on the side of the road after he got hit by some guy in a car. The guy I know was on a motorbike and he's on his L's for it. VERY, VERY SCARY!

Really sad to hear about Roebuck. Never realised the darker side of him, but always a great caller. Can't help but slightly agree with Omegaville's conspiracy theory .
