Random Memories

Anyone find themselves watching games and having random memories from games of old filter back, deja vu moments or just spontaneous flashbacks when you can't bear to watch the current crop any longer?

Be interesting to see who remembers what, I get some strange ones -

PJ kicking a long goal and saluting the crowd in the game against the Eagles late last year, the emotion came out of nowhere because it was the most insipid game ever.

Dog Brown diving on the ball to keep the ball in our forward line in our win in '07, Robbo goaling with a fluke from the resultant ball-up.

Fergy's 30 possession game in Round 1, 2005. One of the strangest games of football ever, Aaron Henneman also dominating.

Chris Lamb beating Lynch one-on-one on the far wing in the Gabba game we won those years back, I also get the recurring image of Neita sticking out the dukes to take that mark when he flew almost horizontal.

The Wizard tapping the ball to Powell, getting it back and drilling it on the run from 50 to seal our spot in the 2000 GF. Strangely my only recollection of the GF is seeing Matty Collins walk out with his arm brace on? Did Collins even play?

Junior McDonald's goal in our come from behind victory at Optus Oval, a goal that appeared to go directly over the post? Contentious.

Ben Beams' last quarter heroics in a wet win over Sydney, shortly before he broke his arm and was never seen again. (98ish)

Your turn.

Hayden Lamaro yelling "Kick it here Hynsie you ****ter" to Carlton's David Hynes at a kickout in a reserves game on Punt Road Oval before we played Freo in 1998. Cue Hynes turning around and booting it right down his throat.

Top 10 in my all time favourite football moments along with when we beat Carlton in '97 and some old mate turned around, stuck a finger in my face and started yelling "IT WAS THE UMPS WHAT GAVE IT TO YOU!".

The thing I remember about that controversial McDonald goal game against Carlton (yeah, it was a point) was Brad Pearce giving Marcus Seecamp a short one in the ribs then Marcus punching him in the head. Great theatre.

Or when we played them later in the year when they were doing really badly (the one Schwarz kicked 5 in the third quarter). Quarter time and some drunken clown jumps the fence and just wanders over to the huddle unchallenged to tell Parko what he thought. Got to within five metres before a security guard realised that the guy who could barely walk wasn't a trainer wearing a scarf.

Great Thread.

Genuinely being excited after “snearing” Donald and Dale Cockatoo-Collins, only to be very disappointed.

Rory Hilton pinning some bloke from Carton to the ground and proceed to punch the suitcase out of him on the southern stand wing.

The come from behind win in the 2000 Semi final against Carlton. The best game I’ve seen live.

Fletcher and Barnard belting up Brad Green before the first bounce of the 2000 Grand Final – I’m still not over the loss.

Watching the last half of the curtain raiser at punt road, just to make sure Darren Kowal was out there.

Steven “Strawberry” O’Dwire and Steven Stretch.

David Schwartz taking the ball out of the ruck on the forward flank in front of the members and doing a 360 degree spin before ambling to the 50m arc and bombing it through in our 94 finals campaign.

Sean Charles running into an open goal on debut.

Todd Viney showing his finger to the umpires after it being chewed by Chris Lewis

Jimmy Stynes yellow gloves in the wet.

Jimmy Stynes cap in the sun.

Allen Jakovich abuse of Gary Perts water bottle

Allen Jakovich kissing his brother at centre half forward after kicking a sausage roll.

David Schwarz kicking 9 straight against sydney pre knee injuries. I think he kicked one from the stand whilst buying a pie he was on such a roll.

Allan Jackovic against North kicking a bag when the Southern stand being built and celebrating every goal like a Brazilian Soccer player

The last game of 2000 where Yze tore West Coast a new one and Woey some how got the votes to win the Brownlow

Beating Collingwood at Waverly Park. Dont remember much of the game but two MCG teams at Waverley? What the

Non Melbourne realted but West Coast Carlton at princess park 95. Was the game where Kouta took 19 contested marks. Imagine that now. Carlton won by a point. Best game I have ever seen live not involving Melbourne.

The merger Game against Hwathorn. Amazing emotional and one of the greatest games ever played. Was voted in the top 10 games of the 90's.

First final I ever saw Melbourne win. Was 9. Prelim final vs Carlton 1988. Gold.

Stynes running over the mark. At the time was 7 and barracked for the bombers but my olds were mad demons. Remember my olds in tears as was most of the crowd. Barracked for Melbourne ever since.

Late 90's beating Geelong despite Ablett kicking a shit load

Darren Cuthbertsons ridiculous first few weeks of football. Thought we had the next big thing

I was fairly certain Pearce's hit was further south than the ribs?

Might have to dust off Hotter than Hell to be sure.

If that ever gets rereleased I want the words "Live from Todd Viney's kitchen" added to the title.

11.7 and one out on the full, making Mick Martyn look like a scrub and kicking that corker of a goal from a bounce 30m out. That was officially the game that sealed my love of Melbourne after two years of half hearted support.

Speaking of Darren Kowal, didn't he have a dust up with Robert Walls?

Lyon kicking 10 in the finals game against the Bulldogs in 94.

Stynes hat in the preseason comp v Brisbane. I think it was Kennedy who ended up ripping it off his head.

Green kicking 4 last quarter goals to beat Carlton in the 2000 finals.

Woey having about 6 bounces and kicking the goal against Port 2000.

Farmer being benched in the first half v Collingwood 2000. He was shocking. Then he kicks 9 after half time

Any time Jackovich ran into an open goal. Only to decide to kick it left foot and miss (he was also pretty funny on the footy show in the early days)

Merger match v Hawthorn. Or shall I say Dunstall v Neitz

Anyone remember when Schwartz use to wear a head band for his first few seasons????

Todd Viney retiring to be the Scud's fitness coach. Only to return half a season later.

Thinking Glen Lovett and Brett Lovett were brothers and that just maybe Andy Lovell was a cousin of theirs.

Does anyone remember that game some time in the '90s where Stynes was up against Harry Madden and Madden literally spent as much time possible sticking his head into Stynes' face and body like a ******ed mountain goat. Carlton won the game I think from memory and I am surprised Jimmy didn't just lose it and clock him one.

Gold. The best thing I own on VHS.

Junior McDonald's goal in our come from behind victory at Optus Oval, a goal that appeared to go directly over the post? Contentious.
That Carlton Melbourne game was one of the best games I've been too even though I got sconed by a leather sherrin on the ground after the game.
From memory it was Doggy Brown's 1st or 2nd game and he played quite well with his little blonde pony tail in the number 41 gurnsey.
It was the match Neitz broke his ankle, yes?
The Pearce / Seecamp fiasco on half time was almost as good as the 2 point win.

Ben Beams' last quarter heroics in a wet win over Sydney, shortly before he broke his arm and was never seen again. (98ish)
The Ben Beams memory I have isn't even at senior level. Sitting in the old red seats waiting for a match (MelbvSt.K final of '98) and we lost the reserves game by a few points and Beams hit the race with frustration as hard as I've ever seen anyone hit anything.

That game in the wet in Sydney in 98 I remember a Craig Smoker goal and a Guy Rigoni beauty from outside 50 where the commentators called him Yze.

Woewodin's game against Geelong in 2000 where he ran down the members wing twice and kicked two identical goals then turned to the Melbourne members waving his hands in the air both times.
(Did the same celebration when he kicked the opening goal of the '03 GF for Collingwood)

When your membership got you into the Melbourne rooms under the Olympic Stand before games. On my hunt for autographs I saw the then recently retired Alistair Clarkson in his fluro runners gear but still thought he was worth getting a signature from so I went up and asked and he looked at me like I was ******ed and told me 'Oh, I'm not a player'.

A tight Friday Night game at the MCG v Hawthron. Late in the last quarter the umpires almost cost us a game when they payed in the back against Scott Chisolm on Alistair Lord, we won by a point that Robbo rushed over the line in the dying stages, the most celebrated rushed behind I have ever seen.

The Round 2 1998 win against North in a twilight match and the team sung the song back to the members after we won.

Pure gold.

:D

windy hill victories in the late 80's/early 90's. we pulled off some huge upsets out there. darren bennett used to love the hill.

Remember that. It was a cracker of a tackle by Chisholm too as I recall. Couldn't stand him but he definately wasn't in the wrong that night.

What about Luke Williams' debut on a Friday night against St. Kilda after being elevated after Gary Lyon's retirement? Had the first shot at goal, missed and went from there. What I remember most about that night was that for some reason the St. Kilda cheer squad were sitting in the middle deck of the Ponsford Stand and when some drunken Saints fan freak went over to try and join them there was almost a dust-up. I also backed some dog called Carson at $14 for the win at the TAB caravan which used to be on the old ground floor of the Ponsford. We lost of course. http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/1999/111519990723.html

against the doggies maybe 3-4 years ago jeff white earning a contentious free kick in the ruck contest from a throw in and kicking an absolute bomb from outside the fifty which curved back in and won us the game. the footage of him raising his huge muthaf***** arms was played on tv for the rest of the season.

the last great play i ever really remember of OOOOOOZe, when he took that huge mark agaisnt geelong at kardinia.

Long time ago, can't pin point the year, thinking 1998, was at a training session. Family friends with Greg Hutchison (name drop #1) so got to go in the rooms after, someone's birthday so big chocolate cake, and all I remember is seeing the Wiz take 2 pieces, scoff them down, then head back over 5 minutes later for more.

The 1994 finals series, Brett Lovett smothering the Diesel in an upset win, killing the dogs in the semi final.
Anything Jako did.
That 1998 finals win against Adelaide.
Farmer kicking 8 against the Kangaroos in the 2000 prelim.
Chatting to Farmer when both smashed on the revolving dancefloor at the 21st in funkytown, 200?.
Modra deciding to kick 7 or 8 off the ground for fun at the G one day in a thumping loss.
Damien Gasper attempting to play full back a few times.
Chatting to a livid Woey smashed at crown weeks after we sent him to the scum.
Glenn Molloy's unfortunate mug.

Incidently, Doggy Brown left the Crows game on Sunday at 3 quarter time. Lol.

Game against Freo on a Friday night in 1999 (who thought that would rate?) We're there way early and Tone is having a kick on the ground with Waterhouse. There's a couple of teenage groupies behind the goals and for want of anybody else around they ask me to take the photo of them with Modra (what? no photo with Clive?). So I grab the camera and issue the immortal line "Now, you two smile - and you don't kick ten goals"

The **** didn't even thank me in his post-match interviews.

Damn I forgot he was playing for Freo by then. I at least in my mind I had us being thumped by the Crows.

Having missed the Optus Oval fiascos a few years back I would think that the 18k there that night would be the lowest crowd I'd been in for years before last week.
Last week was the hardest sell I've ever tried to put on my mates to come to a Melbourne game. "come on just because we are playing Adelaide on a Sunday night in the worst weather imaginable doesn't mean it wont be fun...." I ended up convincing my ex to come with me. :o

Worst crowd I ever saw was a Friday night game against Brisbane in the early 90's when there were so few Bears fans there that our cheersquad had to help them hold their pissy little banner up.

Apparently there were 20k there. Must have been about 500 Brisbane in that case.
