Was hoping he'd slip to us in some freak turn of events back in his draft but just stopped caring once he went to Port :p

He's a shocking kick but it hasn't really been an issue yet..everything else seems to look like what we need (strong mark, highly rated KPF)..

Toad most clubs are happy to trade reasonably skilled or experience players to clubs for draft picks to draft players they haven't seen play an AFL game before. This guy was a top 10 draft pick with 2 years in the system and we have observed him play 3 pretty good games at the highest level. I reckon they should try and make it happen, we need a Hurley type match winner up forward and he could be as close as we get to him for a while.

Mate, I'm all for getting decent young players, but just don't want to give up too much on unproven kids, and from what I've been reading Port are going to ask for Gibbs, Murph and Kruezer for him.

The $64 question is, Is he going to be worth what they want ??
 
We won't have to give up one of our midfield stars, like you said Toad..he's played 3 games! Add to that he might really want to come back to Melbourne so that would give us a Sam Jacobs type situation. I get the feeling an established player + 1st rounder will get the job done.

Hey not having a go at you Toad & No way will we be giving a Murphy or Gibbs or anyone of that quality away, but some on here are over stating the value and upside of Russell or Hampson which to be fair is not much more then the upside a Butcher has.

To mould or build a team capable of winning flags we need to have options in all positions and key forward is our biggest concern at present where as ruck or half back isnt.

I guarantee you if we keep an abundance of half back flankers and ruckmen with no key forward option we wont win a flag until after Murphy and Gibbs etc have retired.

Port are dreaming if they think they will get any player of that quality of us, worst case scenario for them is lose him to pre season draft for nothing.:thumbsu:

I recall Butcher being touted as a possible no. 1 pick early in 2009.
Clearly has the attributes to make it big, but we also know it doesn't always work out that way.
By putting the numbers together we rated Lucas ahead of Butcher even in 2009.
I wouldn't be giving up the house for Butcher whilst having Mitchell in our back pocket, just yet,
 
I was hearing they were keen on Kane Lucas earlier this year.

Kane Lucas + 1st round for Butcher.

would save us from losing hampson which id rather not. would rather convince warnock to go

:thumbsu: Yep, because Kreuzer will become our number 1 ruck and at least Hampson can possibly contribute up forward whilst being the back up ruckman where as Warnock cant and wont be our number 1 ruck option going forward.

Would need to pick up a developing ruckman in the rookie or pre season draft though for insurance.

If Lucas was involved I would imagine it would still take a second player such as Hampson/Russel to get it done.


I think it would/will be VERY difficult to get Butcher to Carlton, and he won't come cheap.
 
Lucas + a 1st rounder would be more than enough. Russell/Hampson on top of that would be ridiculous...If they asked for that I'd quickly turn our attention to Sam Reid

Nope. .. We might inquire but GWS would probably tag him. ..

As for Butcher, if we can get a reasonable deal done, sure but we don't want to go overboard. .. We're lacking a KPP player and KPF seems to fit right now but we could just get a solid lead up type and still do well. ..

Our strength is in our midfield; our backline is coming together; and our forward line is great except a lack of KP depth. .. We don't want to go the quick fix when mature age recruit with a solid grab could be more than enough while we continue to develop our own. ..

They are talking a possible 500k contract for Butcher in todays climate of over spend and GWS throwing the cash around. .. remember he is a first year 4 game player. .. If Waite were fit we'd be fine for the moment and we have options to develop we have too many 'stars' stretching our purse strings already and don't want to add another one. ..

Just quietly, so would I.

Us being vocal for Butcher may also by a side play to alert others that we're ready to move.
We have the money, so we just need the right trade.
 
Id also be happy to let Buckley go if it ment not allowing us to trade our first pick for butcher.

He's not worth pick 1 with all his injuries this year, but if other clubs wanna b dogs then let him go if its gonna hamper us gettin butcher

We will not need to use our 1st round pick for Bucks. We will be using no more than a 2nd rounder for him.
 
To be honest I don't think we should wrap our hopes up in scoring a young talented KPF. Reid, Butcher are the big names people keep bringing up when the truth is we could set our sights lower, target a couple of depth players, look at a fill in mature ager from the VFL and be better off

Big Key position players are not hidden in the VFL, if they are any good they are snapped up pretty early, (JPOD is the exception to that rule).
