Didn't want to derail the D&T thread any further.

I was having a look at our use of defenders throughout the season.

1 - Thompson, Firrito
2 - Thompson, C.Delaney, Firrito
3 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
4 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
5 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
6 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
7 - Thompson, L.Delaney, C.Delaney, Firrito
8 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Grima, C.Delaney, Firrito (Schulz game)
9 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Grima, C.Delaney, Firrito
10 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Grima, C.Delaney, Firrito (Franklin game)
11 - Bye
12 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
13 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
14 - L.Delaney, Grima, Firrito
15 - L.Delaney, Grima, Firrito (Cox game)
16 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
17 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
18 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
19 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
20 - Thompson, Grima, Firrito
21 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
22 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
23 - Thompson, L.Delaney, Firrito
EF - Thompson, Grima, Firrito

Firrito - 23 games (14 wins)
Thompson - 21 games (13 wins)
Grima - 13 games (9 wins)
L.Delaney - 13 games (6 wins)
C.Delaney - 5 games (2 wins)

- We had 7/7 wins in the regular season with the Thompson/Grima/Firrito trio.
- Luke Delaney was used as a backup to Grima and Thompson. He only played one game with them both (vs Port, Narni's first game back).
- Rd's 8-10 - WTF.

The stats without the 4 games vs expansion teams are probably more relevant.

Firrito - 19 games (10 wins) = 53% winning record
Thompson 17 games (9 wins) = 53%
Grima - 12 games (8 wins) = 67%
L.Delaney - 11 games (4 wins) = 36%
C.Delaney - 4 games (1 win) = 25%

Of course you can't read too much into it because there was a fair change up the other end of the ground as well.

Still, it would be nice if Narni could play a full season for once. Stay away from him this preseason, Jack!

I'd be interested to see you throw McMahon into this equation too. We were dreadful when he was missing and almost instantly became very strong again when he returned.

When he, Thompson and Grima all played, I'd guess we didn't lose too many.

If I had the time I'd check the overall winning% of the Thompson/Firrito/Grima trio

I'm pretty sure it was close to perfect in 2010 as well, bot sure about 2011 though

Clearly our best form was when we went in with a slightly undersized defence with run and skill on the flanks. Rd 8-10 was was too cumbersome and lacked any run and creativity.

Thompson, Grima and Firrito should start as tall backs. Kennedy could come in as a flanker as he has run, pace and a booming kick. L Delaney is depth, needed with Grima's history. C Delaney is developing, maybe gunning for Spuds spot.

Am I the only one confused by the OP? I thought we normally named 6 defenders and as long as I can remember all teams did this. Why then are you only naming Thompson and Firrito as defenders in Round 1? There must have been 4 others went out there that day.

Surely if you are trying to do some sort of comparison of each player, notionally named/played in defence, you need to name all six and then give them some sort of a score based on wins and losses. Even then at best it is only a guide.

And you haven't once named Scotty McMahon, who, when out with hives for an extended period of time, was sorely missed. (no pun intended)

Really good post Daz, cheers for putting the work into it. I was thinking along the same lines as YOTR; I know you're looking at the taller defenders here, but Scotty McMahon is such a vital part of that backline too. Just hijacking your hard work, but I thought I'd chuck Loose (and the result for each round) on top of it.

As per YOTR's suggestion re: Thompson/Grima/McMahon, we won 8/9 (or 89%) with that combination... the one horrible loss against the Eagles in the EF.

As per Mixed Results' suggestion, we won 8/11 (or 73%) with the Thompson/Grima/Firrito combo.

I realise these are pretty small samples and a lot of other things were going right for us in the games that McMahon played, especially in the run home, but statistically (or otherwise) he's clearly so important. And when our full strength backline plays, we're in pretty good nick. Thompson's year was fantastic, there were a few dark days where he seemed like the only one out there really doing his job.

When I started the post, my intention was to highlight the different approaches taken by the coaches wrt tall defenders. Our success coincided with the decision to play two KPD's + Spud.

In the space of 9 weeks, they went from playing just Thompson and Firrito to Thompson, Firrito, Delaney, Delaney AND Grima.

It's honestly one of the weirdest decisions (rounds 8-10) of Brad Scott's tenure

I remember in Round 6 Bulldogs were able to exploit Collingwoods talls in the backline by going with a small forward line, then in Round 7 we brought in another tall and Bulldogs kept their small forward line. Then after we lost we brought in yet another tall and had one of our worst 3 weeks ever.

I'm really not sure what Scott was thinking

Random Thought that doesnt deserve its own thread, ANyone see the news report in channel 9 about majak tonight?

No. Trouble? Or puff piece?
the most pointless report in the history of reporting. All it was, was Tony Jones talking about 'Marjark' Daws biceps and saying how big they are and then an interview with Goldy who said when majak takes his shirt off other players tend to put theres back on cause he is such a big unit

If our best back six can stay on the park for the season and our midfield are competitive in every match then we will play finals.
