4/10 ... I consider it a failure cause we didn't make finals and we lost to shitmond and Essenscum twice which really got on my nerves ...

after winning about 10 games over 3 years and to win 10 games in 1 year i think is a great effort
id give us a 450% better performance than that 04 year
8/10

I think we've achieved what we were aiming for this year. 8/10.

8/10 ,
we achieved sooo many things this year. crossed off a lot of boxes that havent been ticked in 5,6 even 7 years :)
We beat Collingwood twice =D
won interstate 3 times.
Came from behind at 3/4 time to win :D
Improvement of our youngsters :)

A lot more....

Im proud of how far we've come this year. In the book given to members at the start of the year with Ratts, Juddy and Stevo on the front, an article had the headline- LETS SEE HOW FAR WE'VE COME!! and that was a great headline, coz everybody should look back on this year and see just how far we've come :) .
It was a great year this year and im looking forward on the years to come, as we're on the rise,
So Opposition teams- Watch out, the Blues are coming :)
We can sniff number 17 in the distance :)

Finals were a pipedream.....

7.5/10

Has to be an 8/10.

I was looking for 8-10 wins so 10, with so many of our boys so early in their development, was a good effort. :thumbsu:

* Showed a prophensity to win in front of BIG crowds.

* Won 3, nearly all 4, of our interstate games.

* Exhibited great character to win from behind on a number of occasions.

* Saw MASSIVE development across the team

If you can't recognise the significant step forward that was 2008 then, as my old grandpa would say, you're a bloody goat!

7/10
Compared to last year when i would of given them 3/10.

In hindsight we can lookback and say that we shouldn't of lost to essendon twice when we were in winnable positions. Shouldn't of lost to adelaide and sydney and probably could of performed better round 1. You can look that and say we could of won 15 and believe it or not be in 4th place.

But in reality that was unlikely to ever happen. That's football for ya. You win the games you don't have any right in winning and you lose the games that your expected to win.

Yet we've come in with a young exciting team that can really look to bigger things starting with 09. This has to be the year that shows not only the rest of the comp but ourselves that we have what it takes to mix it with the best.

The foundation has been laid, now it's time to climb that wall.

Aside from the tigers, there is no doubt we are the most improved side in the competition, but i wouldn't go as far as saying we've had an 8/10 sort of year.

I'd say we're right there in the middle with 5/10.

We still fail to cope with pressure - losing to Essendon when we had a chance to really catapult ourselves into the top 8 was the most disappointing game of the year - followed closely by Saturday night v the Hawks.

We still failed to really compete with the better sides, i fail to see how the Roos are a 50 point better side than us.

Our first 3 losses of the year were important - we realised Shootouts don't win you games - that to me is one of the big positives to come out of 2008. We set up a new game plan and really got our defenders up and going. Round 4 V Collingwood was the beginning of the new Carlton. We ended a losing streak, and the '100 point conceded' streak - coming away with a great confidence boosting win over our arch rivals (only to do it again later in the year :p)

I really believe round 5 should have been the game we said to the AFL 'We're Coming' - we had a 60 point lead over the Dees (correct me if i'm wrong) - and we should have kept on going - however we forgot how to play football while in front - something that has hurt us all year. We get leads and we die in the ass - however on the other end of the spectrum, we've developed something we haven't see down at Carlton in a long time - the ability to come from anywhere, and never say die attitude. Our list of comebacks this year is staggering, especially against Western Bulldogs & Brisbane @ the Gabba.

Close losses is something we haven't had the chance to get use to in a while, but we had a couple this year that could have gone our way (Adelaide/Sydney). turn those games into wins and we would have been a real hot crack for the finals.

I still think a big downside to us is our passengers- there are quite a few and i hope it's something that gets addressed in the off season. I also hope Ratten makes Fev watch his last quarter v Hawthorn over and over again through the off season, its something we should expect from him 4 quarters a game, 22 games a year (+ finals :D)

Forward line has been our big problem this year (opposite to the past few years where our back line has been looking 1 dimensional). We simply don't have options up forward, A few guys have had the 1 off up there (Kreuz, Cloke, Fisher, Houlihan) but unfortunately it stops there - its all Fev. Setanta is a big posibility next year to play forward and something i'd personally like to see - keeping Waite permanently down back.

The big improvement that i didn't expect was 3 interstate wins from a possible 4 (could have easily have been 4). Winning on the road does wonders to a side, especially a young side. To develop a winning culture not only at home, but away, will give us extreme confidence in the coming years.

All of that said, we've had a great year by our standards - but overall we've had an average year, finishing 11th with 10 wins and 12 losses.

A few things i'd like to accomplish in 09' which will have made this year all the better for progress:

- Finally get over the line against Sydney and St.Kilda
- Develop consistency (bar a couple of back to back wins and losses, our year has been made up of continuous WLWLWLWLWLWLW)
- Make the Finals

GO Blues!

i Rate the baggers 6.5/10 this year!

7.5/10 if we made the eight

9/10 if we made top4

10/10 If you play in a premiership

Hopefully next year my rating will be 7.5 and higher!

Was he kidding around

Bahahaha...........bahahah! :D

Can't believe some of the neg heads on this thread. You can only rate this year a 5/10 if you seriously see us as a top 4 outfit which we clearly are not - YET. If you have a realistic understanding of our list and it's limitations then you'd surely recognise their efforts this season.

8/10.

It was simply a development year and we did exactly that. Going back to preseason, most were expecting 7-8 wins for 2008. We went two better with 10 and in my mind the season was a huge success.

We were competitive against most top 8 sides (beat two, came within 2 and 8 points of another two). We beat all the bottom 8 sides the last time we played them except for the Bombers.

Showed huge improvement across the park, and the development our youngsters have shown was leaps and bounds ahead than it ever was during the Pagan Era.

I rate the year as 5/10

happy with the year but IMO we still have some major gaps to plug.

10 wins is a good effort considering where we have come from, but we need to look past win/loss and look at our improvement and where did it actually come from and what specific area's did we improve on.

judd- he is worth more than we could have imagined. i'd say worth 4 wins.

stevens- pretty much didn't play last year so like a new recruit. (note: still think he is a squib) a talented player and if not manned up and hurt you but when he is manned up properly all he does is hurt us.

having such a young list we were always going to get a fair degree of natural improvement.

with each pre season the kids get stronger, they can run longer, they can recover quicker and they learn more about playing the game at the highest level and what sacrifices it takes to stay at the top level.

we still get beaten in the ruck most weeks

we still only have 1 fwd set up (kick it to fev)
only 3 payers kicked 20 goals or more, we have too big a gap between fev (99 goals) and the next player (fisher & betts 25 goals)

we still can't match the top teams on a regular basis- geelong, hawhtorn, adelaide, sydney, north, st kilda all = losses

IMO the true test is how we will perform in 2009, we need to be aiming for 12-14 wins and to be playing finals.

we need to be getting wins against the top teams and we need to start puttign away the bottom teams and not relying on major comebacks.

I rate the year as 5/10

I really have no idea how anyone can give this season anything below a 7/10.

Think of your expectations at the start of the year.

  1. How many wins did you expect?
  2. How would our forward line look?
  3. Backline?
  4. Midfield?
  5. Ruck?
  6. Rookies
  7. Cash situation
  8. Facilities
If you look at all these aspects and give some HONEST opinions into all these areas, you will see that we have improved and in some cases beyond expectations.

1. Wins - At the start of the year I had a view that Carlton would win 7-10 games. We hit the upper end of my predictions 8/10

2. Forwards - This is where we need to get some more avenues towards goals. In saying that, Fevola had an amazing year. Betts really added some spark and Kreuzer/Cloke looked good floating around in the forward line. 6/10

3. Backline - At the start of the year I was really worried, the first few games confirmed my worries. Then in the later part of the year I really started to see some light at the end of the tunnel, we have some really good options down back. Surprisingly enough, this is the area of Carlton’s team that impressed me the most. We still have plenty of holes in the backline, but experience will work wonders for this team. 8/10
4. Midfield - I had a feeling that this is the area that would show the most improvement, they did not let me down. Judd with a full preseason will be something to watch next year. The improvement in Murphy and the way Rattan is nurturing Gibbs is amazing. Stevens, yes we all know he does not have much of a defensive side to his game, but you need players of his class and kicking to complement the in and under players. 8/10

5. Ruck - At the start of the year, this was the area of the ground where I knew we would struggle the most. Cloke put up a fight, he tried hard but he is not a viable long term option. Kreuzer showed a heap of potential and Hampson was a little bit of a letdown. We need to show some more improvement in this area next year. 5/10

6. Rookies - Well I think some of our rookies showed a heap of potential, Browne and Armfield are looking like quality pickups. Even add the improvement of some of our recruits from a few years ago (Russel) and all in all a great year for the recruiters. 8/10

7. Cash - Turning around the poor state of affairs from previous years.
8. Facilities - Visy Park is starting to take shape, things are starting to look good.

All this is of course "MY VIEW" of what I expected from Carlton at the start of this year and how I judged their improvement.

Interesting post. Any chance you can crank the font a tad?

7.5/10 could have been a 8+ if we had of won the games against Sydney and Adelaide, all in all a great year from the youngest list in the AFL, next year we will push the 8 and again beat teams in the 8 like collingwood the western bulldogs and pick up those close ones like sydney and the crows.
The coach deserves a 9/10 for pulling the group back together and have us play accountable football along with terrific flow on football, something we didnt do under Pagan.
