His early season form was baffling. The "experts" were all saying how he had been found out as being inept as a one on one defender but last year he was still beating plenty of players one on one.

His issue as you have said, is that he was just trying to do everything without sticking to the basics first. Still not convinced but his last few weeks have been exceptional.

IMO Liam was just left very exposed by our lack of cohesion in defence. You cant have 3 interceptors Marchbank, Weitering and Jones unless they are extremely well drilled. Rowe coming back has acted more of an anchor to our defensive setup- making it easier for Jones to zone off

The main ingredient today was our pressure

But part of the reason we were able to exert more pressure was because we had more smaller running players and less slow KPP's like Casboult.

Remember when we had 4 KPF's and 5 KPD's in one team? No Casboult & Silvagni in our forward line helped our pressure.

Does Marchy come back through the VFL?

Structurally those changes look okay but Rowe, Jones, Weitering and Marchbank looks a bit top heavy to me.
Weitering plays better as a rebounding, intercepting defender at this point in his career imo. He's far from immobile.

That is more like it. That sort of pressure leads to repeat inside 50's which leads to more scoring opportunities.

Team selection played a huge part in this and validates a lot of us on here who have said a lot of our games have been lost at the selection table.

So pleasing to get these kind of results when we set out with a plan and implement it.

Weitering is no slower than Plowman.
O'Shea is faster than Marchbank but Marchbank should be a much better player in pretty much every other way.
Murphy is a far superior player to Garlett and probably just as quick.

I would like those changes.

Kennedy for Ed if he gets suspended.

And Lamb sets the tone....

Best stat of the day

Before I hand out some bouquets, a brickbat to the AFL for scheduling our game against the Dopers in Round 8. If it had been scheduled earlier, as these games normally are, we wouldn't have had to listen to talk about our worst start to a season, where is a win going to come from etc.

How good do we feel tonight? My new stress ball got a good work out during the game, but it was good in the final few minutes of the game to be able to relax knowing we were over the line.

If you look at the numbers you would assume that this was a win on the back of mostly experienced players. Don't get me wrong, Kreuzer, Ed, Cripps & Daisy were all brilliant today, but there was certainly strong input from the younger brigade. Charlie, McKay, LOB, Dow, SPS, Fish all contributed, as did this week's debutant, K D Lang. From what we saw today, he certainly has constant cravings for a goal.

I think Jones had something like 15 spoils today & they were predominantly effective spoils. His effort was significant in preventing the Essendope talls from getting too many looks at goal.

Rowe was as steady as ever, comfortably beating Stewart & playing the percentages with ball in hand.

Lamb did exactly what I thought he would to Goddard & topped it off with a couple of goals, including an important one in the last quarter. When on, he is our most reliable kick for goal.

Kedge's mark & goal in the last quarter was huge when considering the final outcome. We needed that goal to ice the game & it never looked in doubt.

The win was obviously built around our dominance at clearances & some good work at stoppages, but you can't underestimate the efforts of the role players who I have just named. We have a stack of future stars in the team & on our list (some of who are named above), but they are only going to enjoy success if they can rely on the less talented players in the team to fulfil their roles.

Finally, if the Dopers thought the recruitment of Smith, Saad & Stringer was the answer, then they were definitely asking the wrong question. Coaches have lost their job in the past for such hail mary recruiting & if I was Worsfold, I would not be counting on coaching the Dopers into 2019, contract or no contract.

Wow 19 tackles inside F50? That's unheard of for our team.
So crucial in the modern game.

Yep we need to stick to this formula of less slow KPP's...which means sorry but no Casboult & Silvagni down there, certainly not both in there at the same time which makes us really slow.

You're probably right but that mix still isn't right to me. Given the injuries to our defensive runners though, maybe this is the way we go.
