I was looking at the Freo Brisbane game.


Freo have improved with that guy like Frederick and the other guy kicking 4 goals from snaps without hestitating.

We need to recalibrate to go back to the future.

Apart from Melbourne and new emerging teams we are transitioning and should refresh to stay relevant and focus on 2023 and beyond as the smart astute strategy of where we are at knowing we do not want to be Geelong and also do not want to be North Melbourne and Dimma has time on his side so should be wise to use it to refresh.

Frederick was a pick 61 & Banfield Pick 5 in the rookie draft, so it goes to show that you don't have to bottom out to get access to players that can refresh your list.
 
I know it was a tough night , slippery conditions and no Tom Lynch up forward but both Cotchin and Riewoldt need to see this as their last year.

Love them both to bits but I'd rather see them go out now than try to milk one more year.

You can never question Cotchin and Jack's commitment to the team and all the little things they bring each week but I saw glimpses last night to me that say no to next year.

Idk cotchin is still one of the better players.

Playing three 33 year olds in riewoldt. Edwards. Tarrant doesn't seem ideal.

Good to get a game into ralphsmith. Gibcus. Clarke. However

The creative blocks and little handpasses to open team mates keeps him in the side this year, my concern is I'm seeing more and more players just run off him to easily now and its something an opposition team could use against us going forward.

Edwards drop off is very concerning as well, you can tell he knows what he wants to do but his reaction time is a fraction off which means a lot of his tap ons and handpasses are getting knocked away.

Rather these champs go out while there is a little left in the tank, that tank might be empty next season.

Similar feelings from me as well. The problem comes about because both know how to put themselves in position to still impact games, which see the average fan suggesting they're good to go for another year. Great teams make tough choices that are best for the team and not what the fans think is best. I have no doubt that both Houli and Astburys retirements were in part because the club told them they'd no longer be guaranteed a spot in the 22 given the way younger guys had started to step up plus the need to give others the opportunity to press for a spot.

This year in the draft I would be making sure we trade in picks to get a top 10 pick for a KPF and a second round KPF. I would keep Riewoldt for mentoring and insurance and Cotchin as a VFL Player Coach role if he was open to it. Edwards is done.

Geelong have more older players than Us.
If they performing you keep them age should not matter to some extent.
You keep the ones that are performing and you say thanks for your service to ones that aren't

| Trent Cotchin | is still one of our best midfielders he will be a certaintly to go on next year in less he retires early

| Jack Riewoldt | needs to play on another year imo although he is not as good as he once was but still competes better than a lot key forwards around the league I suspect he will have a big say whether he goes on.

| Shane Edwards | As brutal as it sounds he probably he shouldn't go on sometimes you have take emotion out it I know Dimma loves him so it will be hard call.

| Kane Lambert | Will be an intesting one because mind-wise he probably has a lot more in the tank but body-wise not sure the body will be able to hold up anymore the fact he wasn't subbed in on the weekend with a game on the line is probably a sign they have doubt over his body.

What do we need? well clearly I think we need another inside midfielder to help the engine room with Dustin no longer being a bull or playing many midfield minutes Prestia needs help.

That's my asssestment what do you guys think?
 
I see one of Cotch, Edwards or Riewoldt retiring at the end of the year. Edwards seems most likely out of the lot and could be readily replaced role wise by someone like Dow. We've never had a bull inside player in the mould of other teams in our time of success, but rather pressure turnovers and creative releases. Honestly, I like that as it gives our team much more distinctive look to other teams. Having Dow play with Cotch would be great, and the great man can slowly ease out as players such as Sonsie start to make claims for the seniors. Jack much the same in helping out Gibcus and Bauer before also easing out. Most importantly even if they are not contributing on the field like their hey day, having the three seniors around helps maintain the team culture and standards which gives us the best shot of sustaining success going forward.
 
IMO JR should be the 1 that goes on, at least helping out Bauer & hopefully the key fwd we draft at seasons end out until they are ready to take the role.

How does this relate to RFC?

Well the dynamics of success are interesting.

In the NBA they have things like luxury taxes and their wages bill is one of the highest to the point other competitors become resentful. This is to the point there is talk they will have to trade out A Wiggins because players like Curry, D Green a K Thompson are seen as legacy club legend pieces of the fabric etc..

Again, how does this relate to RFC? Well apart from equalisation through the draft etc.. too much success breeds resentment from others against you. So the point being for overall success over the journey it would be wise RFC went to the draft for gains simply to mitigate other risks and boost the chances of the most success for the club over the spectrum of opportunities possible given how the forces work. Whether it is losing coaches and whatever else reduces the ability to keep punching at the highest level all the time so winning premierships year after year is unrealistic given the more success you have the more forces you create to go against your interests

So if not rebuild, refreshment with youth is clearly the smarter approach because it allows newcomers to develop and grow and rise while a experienced level of talent exists to teach and capture more success into the future after a interim dip period

Banks, Brown, Sonsie and Bauer have all shown something, Bauer just off 1 game but all have tools to succeed. We need to find another 2 draft picks inside 30 this year giving us another 5 picks inside 30 to add to the five from last year. I reckon if we do that the reset/rebuild will be done and the focus can move to free agents who will top off our list and keep us as premiership contenders.

Like it or not I know our veterans a champions , but no one is bigger then the club and we need to rejuvenate.For me Edwards , Cotch look like it's time and maybe Lambert if it's that bad being reported.

Definitely be Sheddas & Lambert's last year.
Cotch is playing well enough too go around again if he wants too particularly if the unthinkable happens with dusty.
 
Are we all at least able to acknowledge the club did the right thing in going to the well one more time with Cotch, Jack etc…. ? We are in this season up to our eyeballs …. and with a bit more luck would be equal top right now.

That doesn’t mean things won’t turn as the season rolls on, but I think it’s time for those calling for us to head to the bottom 4 for draft picks and ‘play the kids’ to admit they’re just a little excited about what we might be able to conjure this season.

FWIW I don’t think we will win the flag, but given clubs can spend decades at a time not even in the finals I’m glad we rolled the dice.

8-5 and looking forward to a huge game against the Cats is a hell of a lot better than 5-8 and already scouting our likely draftees…..

Well done Dimma and the club for giving our club legends one final shot at Premiership glory… they deserved it !!

Cotchin needs to play on as our midfield lacks depth and unless we trade a decent one in then the VFL cupboard is either inexperienced or mostly not good enough. He needs to play that Ben Cousins role when he came over for 2 seasons where he basically mentored an inexperienced mf group.
 
Jack is still capable and durable, but needs Lynch beside him as I thought he was average without him bc he got double manned. This is with most teams that have a two pronged attack with an old forward being one. I'm sure Tom would get the same treatment if Jerry was out of the Geelong side.

IMO we can't afford to lose all 3 at the same time. Who from our VFL side atm takes those 3 spots?
