I believe one flaw in our recruiting is not enough emphasis on skill. We seem to be more interested in athletic ability. Geelong showed tonight you need skill. Ive heard too often we can teach kicking etc, thats bullshit. If your playing AFL and you cant kick your not about too learn now, its too late, you just dont have it. Players such as Gill, Knights, Symes, Burton, Thompson and Stevens all have positive sides and some can be very good but you have to be relied on and you cant always rely on them for clean disposal. I hope like hell Dangerfield becomes a gun but the only question mark over his head is his disposal. Otten seems a ball magnet but does he have exquisite skills? Jacky has not shown them either. How about Moran? Thankfully Vince and Porps do.

Agree completely. A lot of our players went to crap under real pressure tonight and the disposal was woeful. Admittedly there wasn't always a lot on offer, but really. Even when we had time a lot of players thought they didn't and rushed kicks.

Good post. We have a lot of atheletes, but not mainly footballers.

Out of the current bunch of youger players. Vince, Porplyzia and Walker have the most natural football talent. I have only seen Otten play one game, but from what I saw he could be put in that category.

A simple question to ask is what Crows players would you back to kick a check side from the boundary line?

I love Johncock but even he doesnt have fantastic disposal. Our leaders in Goodwin and Edwards can also spray it. To be premiers you have to be skilled, otherwise forget it.

Just watching the replay, Tim Watson raises a very good point, have we recruited enough talent to be more than just a top eight team?

this is a top thread kudos to the person that started it.

Skill level is paramount IMO if anything fitness can be improved but either you have it or you dont.

D Jarman wasnt blessed with athletic ability, if anything he moved in such slow motion, but his skill and shot on goal was "special".

If anyone has that goal on video where he kicks a goal lying on the ground that would be awesome. What I liked best about it, is that sure a few have done it, but only Jars would prefer to be laying on the ground kicking goals then running around the field. lol

I miss you Jars !

Your GF goals always always bring a smile to my dial, sorry I am geting nostalgic.

I think the problem is you can be as skillful as you like but you need to be able to produce it under pressure. I would imagine that the majority of footballers on our team (with a few notable exceptions, I'm looking at you Gill/Tippett) could probably kick a football to land in a hoola hoop 30 metres away 9 times out of 10. Reproducing it when the pressure is on (whether that be the pressure of the big stage, or the pressure of being tackled/harrassed by an opposition player) is the big key. Thompson for example is actually a pretty good kick, but when given close attention by a tagger has a habit of shanking it.

This thread should be titled "Using 1st round draft picks wisely" - because that's where you get the cream of the crop, players with the required skill to build a premiership team around.

Players like Stevey Johnson and Travis Varcoe and the like are what we need.

I like Varcoe cause he's a goal sneak type but c'mon guys, we were forced into our crap disposal, they made us look horrible, no matter what sort of disposal you have.

Their D was amazing, Steve has great skills but if you chuck Varcoe on another team that has to deal with Geelong pressure you'll see his skills aren't lightyears ahead of our youngsters.

Geelong were awwsome. Their skill level is amazing. First passage of the game summed them up. They are so clean with their ball use. Kicks are very precise and always hits a target. No fumbles and they move it on quickly as well. No chance for our midfield to help out our D. They are a machine of a team.

We have enough talent – we just don’t play them and give them the opportunity to develop at the level they are expected to succeed

I'm not so sure we do, but as per your second point we will never know unless these "talented" players are given an opportunity to show that talent.

For future reference Porps_is_HOT_loz, just add the part after the = sign “JyWv_fXUBmA” and the ‘you tube’ video will work.

Hamish Hartlet; another bad video but he has fanstastic skills. A player whom we have been talking about and what we need. A small crumming forward.
A young player with loads of talent and has great hands.

IMO what we have been talking about this is the player we should aim for. He would have to be our number 1 pick as he is expected to go high (atm) but who knows!

Oh god.
I had a hige argument with mum with wanting to get foxtel. I even offered to go halves with her and STILL she says NO!!

Since my father passed away when I was young there is only one person coming home with money sooo she said im not aloud to get it.

People with foxtel get on and watch it and a recap about some stand out players would be awesome:thumbsu:

Yeah I got it after a bit of mucking around.
Cheers anyway c98.

Anyway!!

Scott Reed; a tall forward; Kurt Tippett style. Dont really need another one but he is VERY fast, can dodge tackles easy and has a huge mark on him. Also very underated:thumbsu:

I would say go to a pub and watch it have a drink and play some pokies, but that would probably make mum even unhappier.
