Red cards in AFL?

No, it works as it is.

2 weeks ago, Mumford was reported for charging or a high bump, but it turned out to be a legitimate tackle. With a red card in play he probably would have been sent off by mistake.

Sometimes it takes a tribunal an hour to process a case, so it isn't always cut and dried.

I understand people's frustrations, but actions like today are still fairly uncommon considering there is no send off law.

lol at the nuffies in this thread. 'good hit'- no, it was incredibly dangerous and could easily have ended Martin's career or worse. If you think that shit is ok, you're not quite right.

I think an NRL style send off rule is a must for extreme cases like this one.

the umps simply aren't professional enough to make correct calls, worse still is the umps who over adjudicate.

whilst it was dick move from May the tribunal can punish him by rubbing him out for a few games.
If an Ump ****s up because he wants to get his giant head on the tele, your putting the whole team a man down. what if the ump ****s up 5 minutes into the game?

Did God tell you this?

Yep.

Brisbane fans are reading way too much into it. Both players were contesting the ball and May hit Martin front on. May elected to go past the ball and got Martin high, so he'll get weeks.

That's it, though. It's not like Martin had his head over the ball and May picked him off. It's not like May belted him behind play. It's not like he even threw an elbow.

If I was some spud who had no prospects of playing for my team without a significant injury list mounting and was likely to be de-listed at seasons end. If I was randomly named in a grand final against the Hawks. Within the first quarter I have corked Mitchell into oblivion, broke Hodges neck on a goal post and broken Cyril's arm in a chicken wing tackle... All three of them out of the game and all I copped was some punches and bumps from other Hawk players that quarter.

You can guarantee that the AFL would introduce a new rule after my life ban for bringing the game into disrepute was handed out.

Doesn't exist? Did you see the hit in the Brisbane game? Imagine if that was a Grand Final, heads would roll
The only thing wrong with that hit is that he jumped off the ground which caused him to make contact with stefans head. Voss did exactly the same thing to Alan Richardson at the Gabba but stayed in his feet and hit him body on body. Will gets weeks and deservedly so but let's stop with sensationalising it in reaction to parasitic media who's job it is to overact to be heard.

May and contesting ball should not be used in the same sentence.

just saw the incident after reading this thread and thought it was going to be worse.

its part of the game and he well get what he deserves at the tribunal.

Is it time for red cards in footy? It seems a bit bullshit that Steven May can intentionally knock Stefan Martin out and play out the match.

I'd rather see the game go back to the days of the hard hits instead of the bullshit, nancy boy game we see nowadays.

Red cards, FFS.

Teachers can't mark in red pen anymore, better not make them red cards in case the players get their feelings hurt.

End rant/

Don't agree, that sort of hit was encouraged not too long ago. I'd like too see the fatality rate on such hits if it's so dangerous..

I doubt a red card would work due to the incompetence of the blokes dressed like tennis balls.

Having said that, it is pitiful that a bloke can intentionally injure an opponent and the opposition get no immediate justice. Instead North Melbourne get to face the Suns without Thompson and May.

This happened right in front of me yesterday. It happened so fast. Martin was going like runaway train (assisted by Ablett's push in the back). I don't think anyone near me or in the stadium really knew that it was such bad contact until we saw the replay. There was no initial yell of outrage from the crowd or anything because it happened so fast that it was a blur. There was just a deep 'ooh' that Martin had taken a hit and then concern at him not moving. The replays look and are terrible, especially when slowed down but I think it was reactive and very poor technique at very high speed rather than a deliberate act of terrorism on May's part as such.
As for whether we should have send offs in AFL, I'm unsure but it needs to be looked at. I don't think it would act as much of a deterrent, especially in this case for the reasons I mentioned above. However, the Lions had one less person on the bench for an entire half of football due to a clearly reportable offence and this is unfair in a game where rotations and rest are so important. A couple of earlier posters seemed to suggest that the send off idea would be to play 18 on 17 but I don't think would have to be the case. I would say 18 on 18 with both interchanges reduced to 3 or maybe at least have a sub type situation with one of the named emergencies.

No one's died= it can't be too bad? **** me some people are stupid. If you can't see the number of ways someone could be seriously injured by that sort of hit, I can't help you.
