Aussie Editor Canned Over Red Dead Redemption Review?
An Australian Zoo Weekly editor claims to have been fired from his position for blowing the whistle on Rockstar's attempts to influence his Red Dead Redemption review:

A magazine editor who claims he was sacked for posting part of an internal email on Facebook says he was blowing the whistle on video game companies pressuring publications for favourable coverage. Former Zoo Weekly deputy entertainment editor Toby McCasker last month posted on Facebook part of an email that seemed to show a game maker demanding a positive spin on its latest title.

The email was allegedly sent by a publicist for Rockstar Games to staff at the magazine, concerning coverage of the company's new title Red Dead Redemption.

"This is the biggest game we've done since GTA IV, and is already receiving Game of the Year 2010 nominations from specialists all around the world," it read. "Can you please ensure Toby's article reflects this — he needs to respect the huge achievement he's writing about here."

McCasker told news.com.au the email was an example of growing pressure from game companies for favourable media coverage.

"I did not sign up to become a journalist to write advertorials masquerading as editorial," he said. "This 'cash for comment' culture that is fast becoming the status quo within print media bothers me a lot."

Ol' Toby appears to have been kicked to the curb for posting the email, rather than refusing to cooperate, though that could indeed by the real reason. In my own experience, you do get the odd bad apple attempting to influence proceedings, but typically I just receive hate mail from infuriated PR people, and the occasional developer.

I just pre-ordered and the dude said don't worry about the deluxe edition.

Even though he was honest to me, that hurts his business and have contacted EB's corporate office in an attempt to get him fired.
Are you saying that you called EB management to try get the guy fired?

I think I am just going to preorder the regular one. If you can acquire the "special" items throughout the game then I may as well try and earn them instead of paying for them. Feels like cheating.
I just pre-ordered the standard. It's unlikely stuff like that will be the best weapons in the game or anything like that.

Yep. How dare he impinge on the company's bottom line. Would you want him working for you?
If you are a troll then you've got too much time on your hands.

If you're not...

Of course I'd have him working for me. As a consumer I'd purposely go back to a store and spend more money if they saved me a few dollars. Short run loss, long term gain for sure.

I'd also purposely avoid a shop that attempted to sell me something that didn't really meet my needs just to suck a few more bucks out of me. The 16 year old sales guys at the FootLocker in Perth city are proof of how that doesn't work.

Hope you don't run your own business.

You guys sure troll easy over here.

Anyway, get this ****ing game on ths shelves nowwwwwww! Could be seriously dangerous to my university studies and subsequent career. Worth it imo. Might become a gunslinger.

I just like a good argument to be honest so I'm hoping he's serious. ;)

This game might see the missus finally crack the shits and leave. I have moved the bravia into the other lounge room and sort of bought a new one-seater to go with it.

Meh. Looks like a great game. Should be worth it. She was starting to annoy me anyway.

Yeah, noticed that too, feels very unnatural. I couldn't remember GTA IV using that, but I guess it did.

One thing that DEFINITELY helps though, is if you can find triggers for the L2 and R2 buttons. Kingy alerted me to this a while back but I hadn't seen any in Aus (not that I was looking particularly hard) and so I saw some in the US for $5 and got them right away. Since using them I haven't noticed any real issue with using the L2 and R2 buttons to shoot (Bioshock uses L2/R2 and it's been a lot better than when I used L2/R2 for FEAR 2 without the triggers).

I recommend looking for and getting the triggers if you can get them as they definitely help with anything that uses the L2 and R2 buttons, also just gives a bit more strength to them.

Thanks for the heads up. Never heard of those before:thumbsu:

The more I see of this game the more my mind tells me to get it. Just saw the multiplayer videos on YouTube and they look awesome. Has changed my mind and will most probably get this on release day :p. Been needing to find a new PS3 game, last couple of months releases have been weak to say the least.

Yea releases of late have been ordinary at best, this is the first game i have ever pre-ordered and am fairly excited about it:D

As above hard to trust Rockstar reviews :D
Yeah, I'm sure there was some kind of dodgy done.

The last time there were such early reviews of a game before all the other reviews came out was with Batman: AA. I'm such Rockstar has done the same deal. Give the game a guaranteed 9+ out of 10 and you can print a review before anyone else.

Batman: AA was a great game so in the end it didn't matter and I'm pretty sure this will be the same.

I only have one demand. Because they pushed the release back a month, if this game has any issues or bugs that require a patch within the first two weeks, I will be mightily pissed off.

Interesting that there is an internet rumour that the PS3 version has "significant issues" and no screen shots or videos of that version have been released (source was from a guy that runs a popular gaming website). Maybe the extra time was needed to get the PS3 version up to scratch?

Havings said that, GTA IV on PS3 was okay, but that also had problems on release compared to the 360 version.
