wouldn't call him crap. but it's getting to the stage where you've got to do something different. you can't drop him so throw him to opener? I dunno know. Doing nothing to him is akin to banging your head on the table imo.

which is what SA has been doing for a number of years.

Ferguson has had a number of years to become the elite level batsmen he promised to be early on his career.

putting it simply, he has failed to do that and averages what 35 in shield?

I don't know if it is his application, SA development process or a weak state cricket comp, he isn't good enough and needs to be dropped to atleast give him a wake up call for state duties.

I just can't understand SA cricket. Yes we don't have the population that NSW has, but they have quality coming out their rear.. we barely have one South Australian born player doing anything.

Also, our futures team is kicking arse (with the help of imports too), but they step up and do nothing at the full level. Confusing times.

On Ferg, I think he is just trying a bit too hard. His One Day form has been very good and he has been trying to play ODI style in the Shield and it hasn't been working well, apart from the 2nd innings the other day. He desperately wants to get back in the Aus team and is just going about it the wrong way.

Couple of changes for our next Shield match, starting tomorrow against WA...

Out: O'Brien, Bailey, Dougall
In: Williams, Tietjens

Cameron Williams is a 20 year old leg spinner, while Carl Tietjens is a 25 year old quick. Both are coming off strong performances in the Futures League. Good to see some more young guys getting a chance, would have liked to have seen Opie or Delaney but Tietjens is in good form by the sounds of things.

What has happened with James smith? Didn't he start the grade season with a big ton? I was hoping this may of been a break out season for him

Not sure. He has only batted twice in A Grade cricket this season - for scores of 144 and 91. And he scored 87 and 37* in his only Futures League match. He did play in our last Ryobi Cup game though.

On the topic of young players, Tom Stray is a 24 year old batsman who played two games for Victoria last season but moved to SA this year. He has scored 2 hundreds in his 2 Futures League matches. So maybe we'll see him at some stage soon.

Guess we're seeing him sooner than I thought. Stray is debuting for SA today, in place of Christian. Also, Tietjens is playing as part of a four man pace attack - guess Cooper is our #1 spinner this match.

And we're already 2/17 - Harris and Klinger both out.

Probably won't them bat again regardless of this stand but seriously, why are they playing Kelly or Sayers at all if all they're going to do is give them one game? Tietjens will probably be in the same boat.

It is soft from blokes like Ferguson, Klinger and Cooper who are dropping into the middle order while a new bloke to the team can be the sacrificial lamb at the top of the order.

Hey South Australians do any of you know if the rumour that Dan Christian is keen on moving to QLD next summer?? Was in the Brisbane paper this morning that he is keen on playing under Darren Lehmann for the Bulls next year.

How far off is Tim Davey from getting an SA gig?
He's played a few 2nd XI games over the last couple of years but it seems they prefer Ludemann/Crosthwaite.

Pretty much assumed that would happen...

So we're basically half way through the season, let's have a look at how the Redbacks have fared...

Sheffield Shield
Best to forget about this. From 6 matches we have 3 draws and 3 losses. Although some of our players have been impressive...

Klinger - 538 runs at 48.90 (4 50s)
Christian - 475 runs at 59.37 (2 100s, 1 50)
Cooper - 470 runs at 47.00 (1 100, 2 50s)

George - 21 wickets at 35
Putland - 13 wickets at 20
Mennie - 10 wickets at 30

The loss of Putland really hurt us, as he was one of the form bowlers in the country before his injury. And we've seemingly found another solid option in Mennie, which is nice.

But, there have been even more disappointments in Shield cricket this year...

Ferguson - 320 runs at 29.09
Harris - 278 runs at 30.88
Blizzard - 63 runs at 12.60

Bailey - 3 wickets at 133
O'Brien - no wickets from 56 overs

So basically we have 3 good batsmen, and then the rest have been average at best. And we have no spin bowler capable of taking a wicket.

What can we take from the season so far? Christian is on the fringes of Australian selection, Lyon has been great in the Test side and not much else really. We have given game time to a few new players - Thornton, Stray, Tietjens but we haven't seen any miracle debut performances from them.

Going forward, I would say pick some younger guys and actually stick with them. Don't bring Sayers in for one game, and then drop him. I'd also be giving Richardson as much Shield cricket as possible, as we'll be better for it in the long term. And Harris looks like he might be a specialist T20 player now, get James Smith back in there.

As for the spinner, it looks like young Cam Williams might be next off the block. Maybe we could keep Muirhead around after the Big Bash too. Just again, stick with a spinner and show some faith in them.

For the second half of the season, ideally I'd be looking at...

James Smith
Michael Klinger
Tom Cooper
Callum Ferguson
Tom Stray
Daniel Christian
Tim Ludeman
Kane Richardson
Gary Putland
Cameron Williams
Peter George

Could go in so many different ways though.

Ryobi Cup

So we might be last in the Shield, but we're sitting on top of the Ryobi Cup table with 4 wins from our 6 games. Amazing how things can be so different. What's even more interesting is that the majority of our batsmen are still in pretty poor form in this format too.

But the good first...

Ferguson - 286 runs at 71 (1 100, 2 50s)
Klinger - 273 runs at 45 (1 100, 1 50)
Cooper - 255 runs at 85 (1 100, 1 50)

Christian - 11 wickets at 26
Richardson - 9 wickets at 34
Haberfield - 7 wickets at 18

They are pretty much the only batsmen who have scored for us in the Ryobi Cup, and luckily for us they are doing it pretty regularly. Would hate to see where we'd be without them. As for the rest of our team...

Christian - 90 runs at 22 (has only faced 74 balls in his 5 innings)
Harris - 85 runs at 21
Borgas - 89 runs at 29

O'Brien - 2 wickets at 87
Bailey - 3 wickets at 23, but has only bowled 16 overs in 3 games

Christian is almost playing as a bowler, considering he hardly bats and tends to take the new ball too. Think we need to get more out of him with the bat. While again, Harris and the spinners are doing nothing. Interestingly, Blizzard has yet to play a Ryobi Cup fixture for us this year.

And my team for the rest of the season...

Michael Klinger
Tom Cooper
Callum Ferguson
Aiden Blizzard
Daniel Christian
Theo Doropoulos
Adam Crosthwaite
Kane Richardson
Cullen Bailey
Gary Putland
Jake Haberfield

The real stuff is finally back.

Anyway, we've made three changes to our Shield squad - out goes Daniel Harris, Daniel Christian and Tom Thornton, and in come James Smith, Cam Williams and Travis Head.

From the sounds of things, Harris is gone for good too - Berry was talking of 'generational change'. So that is promising, and he has definitely done that with the inclusions. While Christian is obviously with the Australian team.

So James Smith is finally back, and will probably reclaim his spot at the top of the order. Cameron Williams is a 20 year old legspinner, and will be debuting tomorrow. He still has a fair way to go, can bowl a few loose balls but people sound impressed by him. Interesting fact, he was a contender on the cricket reality show currently showing on Foxtel - he was eliminated in the second episode after being unable to land his stock ball in a T20 match.

Travis Head is the one I'm excited about though, was the best player in the U19 National Championships last month averaging well over 50 in the middle order. Hopefully we can finally develop a young batsman of our own.

1. James Smith
2. Michael Klinger
3. Tom Cooper
4. Callum Ferguson
5. Travis Head
6. Tom Stray
7. Adam Crosthwaite
8. Jake Haberfield
9. Cameron Williams
10. Peter George
11. Joe Mennie/Carl Tietjens

Yeah, that probably would have been him. He has been splitting his time between A Grade, B Grade and the Futures League this year. In his two Futures League games he has taken 10 wickets, which is a good thing because from the looks of things he didn't exactly bowl much in his A Grade games.

I went down and watched him yesteday.

was just simply trying to hard and they just picked him off, you could hear the guy grunting as he bowled...waist high full tosses......that being said Cooper wasn't much better.

To be fair on Williams he did have a regulation catch dropped of his bolwing an mid on which may have changed things.

Hard to know just how much on the outer he is, but I'd be tempted to give Dan Cullen another shot. Would be harder to do so with Lyon in the team given they are similar bowlers, so now seems the perfect opportunity. He has been in reasonable grade form (in all three formats) so it wouldn't be that much of a reach to bring him back.

He might not be everyone's favourite, but it would be nice to have an aggressive bowler in there considering how this game has gone so far. The fact that the Strikers went out and got no name spinners from interstate in the Big Bash as opposed to going with him might be a sign of where he stands though.

Redbacks are rightly getting thrashed. Berry and co will come out at the end of the season, say they tried SA talent but it wasn't good enough and then go recruit some more duds like Crosthwaite and co.

How did Cameron Williams get a game? He hasn't taken a district two day wicket this season and his last game in district was in the two's. Seriously kidding themselves. He bowled some serious pump.

Why is Travis Head getting ago of someone like Tim Davey and Moffat in particular who if given a middle order shot would do a hell of a lot better.
