lol at people rating this kid even a a grader.

he may become one in time but hes nowhere near it atm.
lets have them earn their kudos not just hand em out on a platter.

Haven't bothered reading all this thread but disagree with how the potting of Santa started. He said Conca will be a very good player for the Tiges, said we should hold off calling him elite and said he had a preference for Heppell. Absolutely nothing wrong with any of that. I disagree strongly with Santa on a number of things but you all need to get a grip and have a read of what he says before going on the attack.

Maybe it's best to read the thread then, and maybe even take your own advice? ;)

Agree totally with santa's assessment of Conca. In fact, it seems everyone in here does. So why santa bothers to "lol at people rating this kid even a a grader" is the perplexing part, seeing as noone actually did this.

Just typical santa negative sensationalism, maybe should've been a journalist? :o :D

I think his game on the weekend had been hugely underrated. On second viewing he was probably the best player on the ground. I was really impressed.

I for one am very happy with Conca. And also pretty comfortable with not taking Heppell. I have never met Heppell but from afar he appears full of himself. Dont need those types at our club

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQqPoaNNpLE

Also, that footage above is far from impressive. Conca appears much harder at the ball. Having said that, when Heppell puts on 5-10kg maybe he would go in harder then what he does now.

concs is tracking along nicely and will continue to do so. the real question is do you get him into your SC side now?!! ;-)

Traded him into my DT last round for 260k as a backman...SENSATIONAL MOVE! Reminicent of Clarkson moving Stewy Dew to the forward line in the 3rd quarter of the 08 grand final.

Conca is certainly not an A-grader yet but he looked like one on the weekend. If he continually put a game like that together and against tougher ops then he will be an A grader. Easier said than done.

For now I am happy to label him a jet.

hmm lets see here. cloke kicks 3.2 he mis judges the ball 3 times that turn into goals and hes directly responsible for 6 goals.
who had a better game against cloke rance or henderson. from a kpd id take hendersons every time.

he makes fundamental mistakes in the air that should never happen and it happens week in week out.
didnt count for much this week but when we play say wce its a tight game we lose by a kick and rance has mistimed a punch or got under the ball and cant compete 4 or 5 times and they result in goals directly or indirectly then you will and should complain.

its ironic im complaining about him one on one and in the air yet of all our talls hes probably taken more contested marks than any of our talls. now that says something for how we are going in the air.

you think im having a go at him but im not just commenting on an area of his game that still needs a lot of work. its an area where one minute he can be great and the next minute lousy.

Lol this is pathetic. You talk about Rance V Henderson on Cloke.

1 of Clokes goals on Rance were from turnovers from one of our other players and Cloke was sitting back 20m out. Hardly Rances fault.

Another goal was a bloke running into the 50 about to take a shot so Rance had to leave cloke to put some form of pressure on, only for the ball to be given over the top because they had a 2 on 1 and a cheap goal for Cloke.

Rance is not the perfect defender but he is very good in the 1 on 1's ecspecially when the ball hits the deck.

NFI...I must ask if you have ever played footy yourself?

When Conca started he always could get the ball, liked traffic and had neat skills - with no preseason. Now he is looking even better. Great, but what you'd hope for in pick 6. He is a smooth moving complete footballer that perhaps lacks penetration in his kicking compared to Lids/Dusty - but so do 90+% of the AFL.
Compared to Heppel, I see a different player. Heppel is a playmaker running forward from behind the ball. Conca is an inside/outside pure mid. Both types are needed. Both look very good picks. We got Ellis to do what Heppel is, and he looks OK too. I'm happy.

I thought that too until I saw his 60m goal on the run!

hmm decided to have a re read after posters complaing that noone said conca was elite yet.
and yes i apologise no poster has actually said that.

still i hope we dont start putting him on a pedestal before he consistently proves himself.
only very good performances over a sustained period of time will determine his ranking.

just to finish so there is no mistake i apologise to anyone who got upset.
still think heppell will be a better player. still think hes been a better performer tup to now.
and yes i still think conca will be a very good player as well.

as i said just voicing a personel preference. not criticising anyone.

He was awesome today, critics of this selection will be non existent by the end of the year.

Big Conca fan. I would take him ahead of Heppell any day. :thumbsu:

I stated after the draft, that it was probably one of the better draft picks ive seen on a needs basis for some time.
Adds more class to your midfield, is a very complete and well balanced footballer, and he brings a different style of play to your group one that you don't have with Lids, Cotchin and Martin.

Well said santa :thumbsu:

A question for you, and not a leading one. You say you think Heppell is a better player, but would you prefer us to have drafted Heppell?

For me, I can't yet say who is "better", they are playing quite different roles. Where I really like the look of Conca, is that he seems to thrive in the cut and thrust of the clinches, not scared to get his hands dirty. AND he has good skills and decision making on top of that. I think he has the ingredients of being a good, consistent player at finals level, if we ever get there. Same with Batch. They're not overly pretty, but are pretty hard nuts.

Heppell may be that as well, he looks pretty calm and collected. But will be interesting to see how he goes if the acid is really put on him. Will also be interesting to see if he ever makes the move to being a full time mid.

No doubt if we drafted Heppell I would be one of the many supporters abusing the club for drafting another flanker.

We took what we needed most, not necessarily the best.

Heppell is a super talent. Smooth mover, great game sense and great skills. A worthy pick 6 no doubt. However, we took Reece. I for one, am ****ing stoked we took our ranger. An absolute pure mid who can play inside and out. Has wonderful balance, very good footskills, great evasiveness and decision making beyond his years. Not to mention, has recently added scoreboard involvement to his impressive repertoire.

We have a beauty fellas.

PS Conca wouldn't shit himself if Lindsay Thomas was coming the other way. Just saying...

There is no doubt about the penetration of his kicking if he needs to bomb it. More often he chooses to hit someone short on the tit though.

I personally see conca as a good selection and can see massive upside in his game as he develops further.

The kid has only played 20 games but looks like a vetran when he has the ball and his decision making along with ball use are exceptional.

Ideal player comparison - To me i would say ideally he will turn out to be our Marc Murphy

Me too. I find Heppell a little soft and at times totally unaccountable (downhill skiier for me) and his skills at times can be very ordinary. Yes he does some very good things but some very ordinary things too. Ellis will be better than him too.

Damn, I'm wrong!! First time for everything I guess. :D

Hopefully he does get that penetration regularly, then he adds a really dangerous weapon to his already considerable arsenal. Hope he gets to the level he is capable of. the thing that makes me confident is that his psch testing was off the planet. That means he should be a good learner, and self motivated. Poor old JON had heaps of talent, very poor learner and so never got near it.

IMO he is not too different to Cotch. Both play in a crouched style keeping their COG low. Neither are regarded as having penetrating kicks (tho both have times displayed this) Both are regarded as having abilities on the inside and outside.
Just want to note one thing with Conca is when dives in to a contest, he is prepared to make impact regardless on the outcome on himself, more like Selwood. Cotch has the ability to twist at the last moment before significant impact to avoid injury, keep his feet, and keep himself involved in the play.

So happy with Conca but let's not forget about Batchelor. He was dropped after poor Pre-Season form and hasn't put a foot wrong in regular season. I said it last year and I'll say it again, I want him to become a Beau Waters, Heath Scotland no-nonsense type of player for us.

This is a video of Conca's goal, bloody brilliant. But notice the unlucky bounce over Batch's head and the ball falls to his man Watts. Instead of getting annoyed and trying a futile chase on Watts, he gets on with it and covers who he sees as the dangerous rebounder in Davies. Smart, level headed play that created the goal.

West coast did the best in that draft with Gaff at 4 and Darling at 27. We were not far behind at all I think

Is fast becoming one of my favorite players. Has taken a couple of big steps this year and seems to have everything a midfielder needs. Is probably along side Cotchin as our most well rounded mid.
