"Reject" side.

Interesting to note the type of team you could make up out of the "rejected" players of the AFL (ie: those delisted by their club, or traded for a supposed "better" player).

Without using all the players possible, this would be my team:

B: S.Paxman, A.Schauble, F.Francis
HB: M.Pike, D.Wakelin, M.Collica
C: J.Blakey, A.Fletcher, M.Merenda
HF: J.Murphy, J.Barker, S.Clayton
F: A.Lord, S.Rocca, P.Licuria
Foll: M.Primus, D.Kickett, T.Liberatore
Inter: J.Barnes, T.Woods, K.Kingsley, C.King

(S.Paxman isn't "really" a reject as such, but considering he was an accomplished player with Fitzroy, the Brisbane Lions "rejected/overlooked" a great player who they had the 100% chance of drafting).

Honourable mentions to J.Romero, T.McGrath, R.Taylor, B.Sholl, and I suppose even M.White deserves a mention somewhere!

(Anybody else got players that I forgot??).

Delistings that have come back to bit us on the arse:

Andrew Thompson (might add young Daniel Wulf to ex-doggies doing well at the saints in a couple of years)

Jimmy Plunkett at the blues - (and we kept Wills!)

Stephen Powell -- Traded because he had "no more to offer the team".


Plenty of 'rejects' that have benefited us over the years, and (amongst others) in the current side:

... ironic that'll these players will probably be gone by the end of the season though....

I've left out the obvious ones, like, P.Bell, W.Abraham, etc. etc.

You could also add A.McLeod to the list, as Fremantle gave him up at one stage!!!

Regarding Primus, as Port01 pointed out, Primus was given the flick by Geelong, from which he went to S.A., and then to the Roys.

I would almost consider Brisbane to have "rejected" Primus, as his reason for not wanting to play there, was because he wasn't seen as a required senior player ahead of M.Clarke, and C.Keating. Although, M.Clarke is no longer at the club, and C.Keating has struggled with injury! Gee, I reckon if the selectors had their time over again, they might just have made M.Primus their #1 priority!!!

Funny to think really, a lot of these players are associated with a handful of clubs (being, Fitzroy, North Melbourne, Footscracy, Geelong and Fremantle). Funny that, really!

I think Sav Rocca is playing some of the best footy I have ever seen him play.

His follow up work compared to when he was in Collingwood has improved out of sight.

Kent Kingsley has looked the goods for us this season. Anyone who can consistently take 8-10 marks is a handy footballer IMO. I believe he'll be one of the best pick-ups we made.

Murph is fitting in well but has been out injured for half a dozen weeks (as has M.White)

Well, none of those were exactly "rejected" by their club. I reckon the Brisbane Bears, Carlton, and WCE, would have all wanted to keep those players at the time of losing them.

Perhaps Ken Judge could be the "reject" coach (after being rejected at Hawthorn). Or Gary Ayres??

Yes but now the definition of 'rejected' becomes subjective. If a player like Collica wants to come home to WA I would hardly call that being rejected. On the other hand Chad Rintouls wage demands were rejected by West Coast as Collingwood were offering him more to join them. So was Chad a reject? I guess it is all too easy to bandy the word 'reject' around but if the meaning is that the player was so poor he wasn't wanted by the club (even on rookies wages) then I doubt that there would be enough to make a side.

I think Judge is a poor coach but he would not have been sacked by the Hawks so I don't think he can be called a reject. Damian Drum...yes

"Reject" is such an emotive word anyway. I mean...would you call Sean Wellman a reject? Since he was traded by Adelaide...he has proved to be one of the better backman in the AFL. Paul Barnard didn't show much at Hawthorn, now he has proved to himself to be a great asset to the team as a utility.

The word is rather derogative.

I only know 1 M.Merrenda in the AFL, and he is not a winger, more of a Half Forward/Forward Pocket sharker.
Otherwise, not bad at all.

Id have Wellman and Sanderson back at Adelaide; although theyre probably not rejects in the true sense of the word.

Ken Judge didn't get the sack from Hawthorn, yet they didn't offer him another contract, so you can pretty much say he was rejected.

I don't really have an opinion either way as to his coaching ability, other than that he is a competent coach.

Chad Rintoul would qualify as another "reject", in consideration of the circumstances that he left. Similarly, M.Collica, from what I heard, wasn't a required player at Hawthorn.

By "reject", as I said before, I am referring generally to players who were traded by their club(s) in the belief that the particular player wasn't of much worth to the side. This could include players who weren't offered a new contract, delisted, or had their proposal for a new contract rejected.

I am not really referring to players, such as Wellman, Molloy, Jarman, Michael, etc., who were part of trades in which there was a sense of the trade being "even", where both sides gave up valued players. For this reason, I did not include S.Wellman as a "reject" as it was reasonably clear that his trading, was not of an unrequired player, but rather, a good player with whom another good player could be received in return.

That's why I made the topic "rejects" (using the earlier definition), rather than just traded players.

I know these definitions mightn't gel with some people, but it's it's nothing to lose sleep about.
