Re: The Sydney Swans Reserves vs. The East Coast Eagles

Yes Soph, speaking of next week
Swans Reserves v Belconnen Magpies
Lakeside Oval
Saturday 26th March 2pm

A precursor to Round 3 NEAFL when the 2 sides will clash at the MCG. Belconnen have been one of the powerhouses of the Canberra competition since the Swans joined, but had a bad run in 2010 with injuries to key players and finished out of the finals race. They'll be keen to atone for that poor season and will be hoping round out their preparations for the season proper in style.

For the Swans, we may get back any one of LRT, Kennelly, Spangher but will probably lose a few to the seniors playing in Melbourne the day after either as inclusions to the team or travelling emergencies. White, Reid, Dennis-Lane, Meredith and Parker would be the most likely (in no particular order)

I plan to be there, but I'm not sure when as I have a wedding to attend at noon. Hopefully it isn't a long ceremony.

Love it a reserves practice match taking priority over a wedding.

Re: The Sydney Swans Reserves vs. The East Coast Eagles

Interview with Reserves coach Playfair about the game, it includes some highlights from the game. I liked them all!
LewJo intercepting a pass in defence, spotting up McNeil, plays on quickly to Gordon long into Jesse who flies and hangs onto it.
TDL sprinting clear of his desperate opponent and finding Jesse who leans back into his man, knocking him off-balance, and creating an easy mark for himself.
Sam Reid's smart spread of play to the free McNeil who sets it up for TDL to hold onto a strong grab in front of Jesse.
Jed Lamb's tenacious one-on-one battle, staying on his feet and finding Jesse who juggles the mark on the lead.

Re: The Sydney Swans Reserves vs. The East Coast Eagles

So with Reid and White playing seniors where can we expect Johnston to play? Will they continue experimenting with him as a backmen or send him forward. I guess with LRT in the side he'll most likely go forward.

Hopefully we'll see LRT and Johnson as the two main defensive talls, Currie and Haren plonked up near the goal square, and Johnston roaming around CHF / HFF. I really hope LJ gets a chance to play seniors reasonably soon but his best bet, I suspect, is playing the old ROK role.

Re: The Sydney Swans Reserves vs. The East Coast Eagles

Reading the twitter updates from the last two games it seems Kreugur is well on his way in developing as a footballer, seems to be a pacy gutrunner with an attacking mindset, what would people who have seen him play class him as? Outside mid, winger, hff?

Arrived just after the second quarter started. A few observations at half time:

Bird is all class. All the time in the world.

Dill is in the same category as Bird. Just that step above. He's also not really that small. He's a touch shorter than Bird, but looks about the same weight now. Shouldn't provide too great an obstacle at senior level in any case.

LJ is playing down back, and I can see why. He hasn't had much to do, but he's rebounding very effectively, and he is super eager to do damage. It looks like he's enjoying himself. If his defensive game is up to scratch (difficult to tell when our midfield has been so dominant), he might really flourish there.

TDL isn't playing. Some toppy is wearing 8.

Gordon is solid but unspectacular.

LRT is moving well, but has had very little to do.

Pyke has looked impressive up forward. Could be his calling.

Parker has done some very nice things.

Haven't seen much of Lamb but he was apparently busy before I got there.

Haven't noticed much of Haren.

Otten looked a bit listless out there at times. Might just be having one of those days.

Alex Johnson has done some nice things.

Kruger looks tasty, but is still a bit raw.

Lynch has filled out and looks good out there. Maybe he might be worth a rookie spot after all.

I also noticed Kane Murphy out there.

Alright, back home after a dominant display. These are my thoughts from the last 2.75 quarters of footy:

Currie: Good with the taps, didn't do much else. May have picked up an injury in the second half.
Lamb: Would like to say he made a good combination with Currie (;)), but unfortunately I didn't notice them do much together. In any case, he's deceptively tall, very classy, and he did some very nice things. Could definitely play senior footy this year if the opportunity arose.
Bird: Pure class. Booted three goals from the midfield, won god knows how many clearances, just constantly found a way to get the ball to advantage when in close. Always seems to have that extra half-metre of space in the stoppaged.
Johnston: Liked him down back. Probably needs more time in terms of defensive body work, but he's not without potential in that area, and his rebounding efforts were great. Could do very well down there.
Parker: Part of an inside mid brigade that was simply irresistable. Looked very classy out there, won a bunch of clearances, burst through packs, not with raw acceleration, but by running at great angles (would probably make a decent union or league player), used the ball very well, had great vision, etc. Give him some development to the point where he'll be able to hold a full-time position in the senior midfield, and he'll step right in.
McNeil: Alonside Bird and Parker, simply dominated the clearances. Not big, but neither is he small, at least not anymore. Solid and nuggety. He's also very clever. Unlike some rookies seem to do, he hasn't dropped off in his second year, but has maintained and improved his performances. Seriously impressed.
LRT: Had very little to do. Assuming he's fit, he should slot straight back into the seniors next week. Apparently he picked up/aggravated an injury though, which is disappointing.
Johnson: Rather impressed. Quite big, and smart too.
McKaigue: Not bad. Not fantastic, made some errors, but not bad.
Pyke: Liked his performance a lot. Found a fair bit of ball, more than he usually does, took some wonderful grabs up forward, his kicking was reasonably solid, his tapwork was very good, and he just looks overall a lot more comfortable. Keeps improving.
Kruger: Fast, tough, clever, and quite good reach. A very nice combination for a winger/flanker. He's very raw, however. Kicking lets him down, takes a bit of time to handle the ball and switch from carrying to kicking, etc, and will probably take some time before he's racking up the touches. Still, there's plenty to be excited about. His development could follow a similar path to Jack.
Max Otten: Wasn't impressed, to be honest. Just didn't seem particularly involved.
Nathan Gordon: Again, wasn't too impressed. Found a bit of it, certainly contributed, but there's just nothing about him that stands out as a potential AFL player. Unless he can make it as a brilliant tagger, I don't feel there's much hope for him.
Ben Haren: Had a quiet second quarter (don't know about his first), but came alive in the second half. Looked fantastic out there, with some brilliant grabs, strong leads, and even some good work at ground level and running with ball in hand (slotted a nice running goal from about 50 out near the boundary). Really stood out as a player with potential at senior level.

Toppies:

2: May have been Blake Guthrie (think heard him referred to as "Blake"). Looked fit, solid and comfortable out there. Good to see.
3: May have been Nathan Kenny (think heard him referred to as "Kenny"). Looked OK, did some good things.
4 - Jackson Potter: The most promising of the scholarship boys had a fairly good game. Probably not as involved as he would like to be in the year leading up to his potential selection or non-selection, but contributed. He's quite well built for a little guy.
6 - Jack Lynch: I've seen him before and was not particularly impressed, but I must say he looked quite good today. He has really filled out, and he looks like he could develop further. Played mostly forward, and led hard and well, brought the ball to ground, wasn't outmuscled at all, and did some clever things. Could earn himself a rookie spot over the course of the year, when it wasn't looking too likely last year.
8: Didn't do much.
15: No idea who he was, but he looked quite reasonable, did some very nice things including a very well executed run-down and tackle for HTB.
21: Red-head who I think played in the intraclub as well. Kicked two goals and was very handy.
22 - Kane Murphy: Interesting to see him line up for us again. Clearly being looked at for a spot on the rookie list next year, and you can see why. Very short, but he's strong, smart, brave and his skills are decent. If we rookie him, he could turn out to be our Jarryd Blair in 2012.

Not sure if I've missed anyone.

Probably the best, and most physically mature, group of toppies I've personally ever seen, and I think that went a long way to contributing to the result. As they say, it's not your best 6 that win you games, but your worst 6.

Great wrap. Thanks lad.

yeah the toppies were really impressive and yes whilst all my friends were shocked at the height of Kane Murphy i do hope we look at him very good work

My faves for the day were Alex Johnson he will improve really well over the year but i dont think he will play seniors reminds me of Sam Reid when he 1st started out so who knows!

Lewis Johnston down back im starting to like i was telling Grim how i love how he went from down back worked his way up front and was rewarded with a decent goal

Eugene Kruger is an excitement machine worked the ball out of a pack took off down the wing for about 10 meters and slotted a beautiful goal about 30 meters out into the on coming wind all class he is and will be super exciting to watch develop

I love Lamb and Parker but geeze Lamb is only little Parker is solid and will have to play seniors

Bird no need to talk about him he doesnt need to be playing in the ressies all class

McNeil is fantastic like grim said he hasnt dropped off instead improved on last year with bolton retiring and a spot on the seniors open idd love 2 see it be given to Dylan or even Gordon but time will tell

I could rant on but Grim as always has it perfect

Before the Essendon game next week we have another practice match against GWS im devo i cant attended this game so Grim will be doing his hard work again!

I better point out that it was BSA5 that wrote that report and not me, he wouldn't be too happy with me stealing his (well deserved) plaudits again!

I don't have too much to add to BSA's report. I loved Pyke's domination in the ruck and subsequently fed plenty of good taps to the midfield. I was very excited to see Haren pluck many marks with his strong hands and great reach. Lamb was more involved this week and I adore his competitiveness and determination to win his one-on-ones. Kruger is as raw as they come, a fine physical specimen but still lacking the football nous. I hope the coaches can polish him up as they might uncover a diamond underneath.

I also want to caution not to get too carried away as Belconnen were a shadow of their strong teams of the past and I would like to see how these reserves fare against stronger opposition. GWS should be strong opposition given they pushed a combined Canberra side earlier in their preseason. At the very least, it will give Pyke an opportunity to measure himself against a very good ruckman in Jonathan Giles.

Number 21, "the redhead" is Tim Wales... Was on scholarship with Geelong
Hope Mcneil keeps impressing and plays in the senior this year!

Cheers. Would you happen to know the names of the other topups? Particularly 8 and 15

LRT to play at least another game in the 2's before he gets considered for a seniors promotion and Tadhg should be right to play in the 2's this week as well, according to Horse on the Swans website.

That's good news - I'm really looking forward to it now. Imagine if LRT had to play on Folau!

Sydney Swans Reserves v GWS Giants
ANZ Stadium
3rd April 10.50am

The last practice match before the Reserves begin their journey in the inaugural season of the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL).

Possible team list
1. Seaby
10. Currie
11. Lamb
17. Kennelly
22. Sumner (senior emergency)
23. Johnston
26. Parker (senior emergency)
28. McNeil
30. Roberts-Thomson
34. Johnson
36. McKaigue
38. Pyke (senior emergency)
43. Kruger
44. Otten
45. Gordon
46. Haren

+ Academy players/topups Potter, Guthrie, Lynch, Kenny, Wales, Thompson, Brain etc.

I'll try to post a list of the Giants players when it comes out.

Assumptions:
Moore has failed his fitness test and that's why he wasn't selected for the seniors.
All 3 emergencies should see some time as this is a home-based curtain raiser, one usually goes off after half time.
No listed player restrictions.

Preview: The Giants were belted by the Swans seniors, but I wouldn't expect a thrashing at the hands of their junior counterparts. A good yardstick to use would be the pre-season match that GWS played against a AFL Canberra representative side, in which they went down by 12 points despite having 27 scoring shots to 19. This would indicate that the Giants will be one of the top teams in the league, and a real challenger to the Swans for the NEAFL (Eastern conference) title.

In any case, the Reserves should expect a more competitive hitout than in their past 2 practice matches which they both won by over 12 goals.

This is how it should be a 2's match right before the main game.

Wish the AFL would put some of their easy earned into funding a reserves competition with a view to making the depth and development of a team stronger with a good even comp. What an opportunity it would be for a top up player to impress on the big stage as well.

it's really about time the club paid your expenses for this fabulous service Grim.
