Hi guys, due to very little happening at the moment I thought I would create a discussion thread for those of you with either Foxtel or have this year's games recorded and have gone back to revisit those games once again.

I am watching all of the Freo games again on Fox Footy and are picking up things that I had missed by either being at the game live, or being too emotionally stressed out when watching the game live at the time and missed certain things.

Watching the games in the cold light of day when you already know the result allows you to focus on certain players, match ups and selected passages of play.

So I would welcome anyone's comments on a game that they have just re-watched for the second or possibly third or even a fourth time and have something new to bring the table comments or observation wise.

It will help fill the void until pre-season starts.

I'll kick off first so you will all get the idea.

Game Re-watched: Round 16 WCE Vs Freo

Observations: Well the highlights for me were as follows.

Hayden Ballantyne out marking Dean Cox on the wing in the last quarter, even with a busted lip.

Cam Sutcliffe's goal from the boundary line was superb. He was copping it big time too from the feral Eagles supporters behind him who thought he had played on, even though he had never moved off his mark.

Sandi and Clarke were brilliant in the ruck against Cox and Naitanui. (45 hit outs to 34)

Stephen Hill's explosive pace left every opposition player whom tried to tackle him in his wake.

Ryan Crowley playing his own game on Chris Masten rather than tagging him. Crowls just let Masten do as he wanted and racked up the same amount of possessions himself. Crowls actually kicked a 1.2 though where as Masten kicked 0.0.

Nat Fyfe's 30 possessions and 131 DT Points.

Lee Spurr kept Mark Le Crass to just 14 possessions and 2 goals.

Chris Mayne's game was superb and should have won the RGM for mine.

Zac Dawson kept Twinkle -Toes Kennedy to just 2 goals.

Questions for other reviewers: Stephen Silvagni had a pretty good game with 5 goal saving marks, however Jack Darling still kicked 5 goals. At times though Silver was on Josh Hill who did nothing all game, whilst he also seemed to be playing on Jack Darling at the same time.

So who was he on?

Matt de Boer had an interesting day with 16 possessions, but for the life of me I couldn't work out his role or his opponents.

Can anyone help me here?

I have rewatched a number of my favourite games including the first derby and the wins over Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton and Port. The wins over the Suns, North and the second derby are still on my list of things to do.

The things that have struck me are:

1. How well we did with an inexperienced line up (I kind of knew that but it really brought it home)

2. That Matt de Boer had a better season than I thought (I will admit to being a Matt fan - who can go past good looks, brains, good work ethic, great clubman). I certainly thought his position in the 22 would be under great threat. It probably still is under threat, but not as much as I thought.

Thanks to IQ, my wife and I have been able to watch every Fremantle game that Foxtel have shown over the off season. As they are currently replaying the season for the third time, I am on my fourth viewing of the away games and third for home games.

A few observations off the top of my head:
* I am in awe of Zac Clarke's ability to quickly change his mind mid handball to a better option off his left.
* Chris Mayne is a wrecking ball and his forward pressure is second to none.
* Lee Spurr should just save time and start the game with his head bandaged.
* Danyle Pearce started the year well enough, but didn't live up to the hype regarding his disposal efficiency.
* Zac Dawson is the best ruckman we've ever had. ;)
* Matt de Boer had an ordinary year by his standards.
* The only thing the umpires repeat more often than "play on" is "Hayden".

Yep had a look at the Freo v Wiggles game (thanks best wifey in the world for Foxtel for Christmas). I was a little shocked how competitive the Wiggles were for all but the last quarter. We had a good team in and we really could not shake them. Funny though, from this game on we went to a different level!

Sounds like a lot of man love for Clarke there Reggie,I agree his development over the past year or so has been awesome and I think he can go on and become one of the best ruckman/ forwards in the AFL

Actually you've caught me out there. I meant Zac Dawson to go with my wink. Will fix.

I still think Zac Clarke is ready to have an awesome year though.

I've rewatched a few of the games, last one being the 1-pointer vs Richmond. Am I the only one worried about how we will match up against the Tigers next year? For some reason they are able to score really heavily against us. North are heavy scorers as well, but we are able to shackle them much better.

Things I am looking forward to next year, based on what I have rewatched:

Suttcliffe to fill out and really push for selection in the 22. He was a very good sub for us this year, always making things happen as soon as he came on. Turned the momentum a few times for us - Adelaide in the rain comes to mind.

Bally to get a more consistent away form - with the Crozier and Neale nipping at his and Walters' heels, I expect him to take his skills and intensity to the next level.

A full season - touch wood - for the three elder statesmen. Sure we were winning with them out at different parts of the season, but we were just a notch more dangerous with all three of them in the team.

Can't wait for 2014!

Harry you are a sick puppy but I'm right there with you .
Wife and daughters are getting sick of dad watching repeats and try to get the remote out of the hand so I started to watch some Melbourne games to see Sylvia but the games were so poor that I turned them off .

The thing that struck me in watching the games on Fox was the number of mistakes our players made against teams lower on the ladder . We kept inept teams in the game for far too long with poor kicking at goal .
RTB with the coaches will have to sort that out pretty quick .

The overall team slow choke defence that the back 6 apply to teams as well as the 1%ers from the whole team amazing .
How many times Ballas leaves his forward position to apply a pressure effort on the opposition ball carrier as well as his ability to read the play and make huge yardage to apply pressure blows me away.

Ballas so many times after a big effort looks gone for all money and then gets up and goes again awesome

I got rid of my Foxtel as soon as the season finished, couldn't justify it any more as I literally do not watch TV other than AFL. Next year I'm going to buy a new iPad and get an AFL subscription and download replays when required.
I haven't been able to watch a game of footy since the Grand Final. Enjoying the posts in this thread though so it seems I can read about them ;)

You can watch them all on smart replay for free if you live in Australia. Not amazing quality, but on-demand (great for sobering up after a night out)

Great idea for the quiet January.. Haven't watched a single game since the Grand Final. But am slowly over it and wouldnt mind a review myself.. Adelaide away game is no 1 on the list. Really solidified the belief for the players and getting the top 4 spot without the three oldies..

I have watched the gf again, painful as it was. I was hoping to find on 2nd viewing that we were the better team and just unlucky, but the truth is we were well beaten, anyone that thinks otherwise is deluding themselves.

I don't want to single out individual players either good or bad, so here is a team observation. The last 2 finals we lost have been against teams that have been excellent by foot and worked the ball up the field patiently with precise passing. Which is interesting because many say the way to beat a 'press' or whatever it is called now is just move it on quickly at all costs so they don't have time to set up, but we seem to struggle most against teams that just maintain possession and make it a one on one game, stopping us getting numerical advantages at contests.

And I think we will set up less predictably and less defensively at stoppages this year. The forward line will be different of course but that is not all we will change, we have to get the thing in there more often, I think that is what Ross really means when he says we will give up something to gain something.

I certainly thought that at the time. But we still lost by under 3 goals with some woeful kicking at goal as well as conceding 3 goals from incompetent umpiring (not that we didn't get a few dodgy decisions as well, but they were nowhere near our goal).

We didn't need a lot more to go right (given so much went wrong) and we could have jagged a win. IMO that's the strength of Lyon's coaching.

Last night I re-watched our home game against Adelaide, and boy did Adelaide make us work hard for that win.

This was the game that we won with a record low of 33 inside 50 entries.

Adelaide were on high after beating Geelong at home the week before, even without Patrick Dangerfield who didn't make the trip over to play us either.

We were odds on favourites to win this game, even after the loss to Richmond the week before.

Observations

We were lucky that Lynch, Sloane and McKernan couldn't kick straight because we would have lost the game otherwise.

Our key outs were Pav (with suspension), Ballas and Macca

Lachie Neale came in for Ballas, but played in the midfield as Fyfe went to a half forward role. We played with 2 talls only in defence that day which meant that Johnno and Zac Dawson had their hands full all game.

Matty Taberner came in for Pav but was subbed early in the 3rd quarter as he was not having any impact, with only 6 possessions to 3/4 time. This saw Cam Sutcliffe enter the game, who only had 4 possessions though in almost half a game of football.

We really struggled up forward in this game with no Pav or Ballas so we relied totally on Chris Mayne and Michael Walters - who had a stinker by his standards with 14 possessions and 2 goals 1 to show for it.

Nat Fyfe played centre half forward to help our scoring chances and kicked a personal best 4 goals 2 with 29 possessions.

But by having Fyfe up forward meant we struggled in the middle, and Sloane was outstanding with 30 possessions, as was Brad Crouch and Bernie Vince for the Crows.

Summary

We were beaten in every stat except the hit outs and on the scoreboard (where it counts).

Nat Fyfe best on ground, with Clancee Pearce and Chris Mayne second and 3rd for mine.

I also thought that Stephen Hill had a great game in what was not one of our better games this year.

I watched that game last night too Harry. Followed up with the first half of the round 16 derby. I kept a close eye on Darling for you, boy was he switched on for this game.

Goal 1. Action is in wc forward pocket and Dawson is caught behind Cox who takes possession and starts running into an open goal. Silvagni leaves Darling to challenge Cox who handballs off to Darling for the goal.

Goal 2. Action is in the corridor outside wc 50m arc. Darling sprints through the middle to gather the ball, runs inside 50 and goals. There wasn't really anybody on him and he ran past 5 of our guys but none close enough to attempt a tackle.

Goal 3. Silvagni is on Darling and beaten in a marking contest, but pushed well outside the 50m arc and probably too far out to score. Crowley runs through the protected zone and Darling gets a 50m penalty for an easy goal.

Silvagni actually competed against Darling very well when they were body to body, but couldn't match him on a fast lead. At times it also seemed like he was covering Josh Hill.

Will follow up with the other 2 goals after I watch the rest of the game later today.

One thing that has struck me in watching the replays is that while we won most games it was surprising at just how close most of those games really were. In virtually every game the opposition were still in the contest at three quarter time or during the last quarter.
In many cases it was a moment of brilliance that got us over the line (Ballas last minute goal), desperate defence (last second dive on the ball Vs Richmond) or our favourite tactic? of simply wearing the opposition down.
No wonder I need an annual heart check up!
But what is clear, is that we have to improve to have another crack at glory. There is absolutely no room for complacency - especially given we play Collingwood away in our first game.

We got where we did with generally substandard skills all round. If we can lift the skill levels we will kill it.

I haven't been able to watch all of the GF replay either, just the first half. What I noticed was that Pav looked like he was shitting bricks before the game and it seemed to reflect in most of the squad's early performance.

Actually, its only ever: "Hayden *pause* Hayden *slight pause* HAYDEN"
sometimes a "WALK AWAY" or 2 is added.

It pisses me off actually. He's not doing anything wrong so they should STFU until he does.

Just watched the Freo v Port hone game. Was also sober as that night was crazy at the game.

First half: my top 5 players in order.
Johnson rebounding and pin point passing was brilliant.
Fyfe interceptions and rebound.
Clarke solid in ruck and pushed forward to kick goals.
Ballas very creative and worked well forward plus helped yhe mids out.
Walters see Ballas comments.

I also thought Barlow and Neale were terrific in the packs.

Hannath needs to work on his kicking.

I hope to get time to finish watching the second half soon. What a great dominant performance.

I have the three Finals, plus the Carlton, St. Kilda, Brisbane and Derby Round 1 games from last year saved on my DVR and the other day I watched the Qualifying Final win again. NOTHING beats the Prelim Final win, though. The best part? The crowd's deafening roar when the boys run up the race and onto the ground. Still gives me goose bumps! The fans lifted for that match. Also, I watched our first-ever Derby on YouTube. Why was our clash jumper more green than purple anyway? Fun watching a young Winston Abraham run around for us. Also, last week I watched a match I'd never see on TV over here, that I've always heard lots about -- the 1970 Grand Final.

The 1989 Hawks v Geelong GF was my fav an absolute belter.

Re prelim final. Most of the supporters had been drinking before hand and quite merry. It was like a carnival atmosphere. People (strangers) literally hugging and going rampant in the isles. Was epic fun. :p

Hey Gil, hope you have a great New Year buddy.

Our original colours were green, red and white and purple. The green, red and white reflected the Italian heritage of Fremantle, whilst the purple was the mixture of the blue from East Fremantle mixed with the red from South Fremantle.

Purple then became a dominant colour with teams like the Perth Glory and the Melbourne Storm so we went that way later on after it was determined that the green was not a great colour for television.

Purple is the colour of courage, whilst yellow is the colour of cowardness. (Just thought I would throw that last bit in.)

out of our many stuff ups, trading Winston was one that baffled me the most
