Palmer dangled multi-million dollar Gold Coast contract

FREMANTLE rover Rhys Palmer is a priority recruiting target for new AFL club Gold Coast and will be tempted with a multimillion-dollar offer.

The classy left-footer plays only the third game of his second AFL season on Sunday and will be an instant millionaire if he is lured to the Gold Coast next year.

Palmer, 20, was the competition's most outstanding first-year player last season and will be hit with an astronomical offer, said to be a staggering $700,000 a season, to leave the Dockers as an inaugural Gold Coast boutique player.

He has stormed into calculations as a recruiting option as the new franchise ambitiously scours the nation for out-of-contract stars to launch into the AFL in 2011.

Palmer's priority ranking on Gold Coast hit lists soared last week after indications from Geelong champion Gary Ablett and Hawthorn's Lance Franklin that they will reject lucrative offers.

The pair look certain to sign new deals before the end of next year to stay with their current clubs.
Western Bulldogs on-baller and reigning Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney and Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge are also in Gold Coast's sights, but are more likely to resist offers to leave their current clubs.

Palmer is on a standard AFL contract for drafted players, earning up to $150,000 for each of his first two seasons, but will jump to a base of about $250,000 next year.

He is a rising star and the core midfielder around which the Dockers plan to rebuild their playing list after mass retirements last season and an influx of 14 new youngsters.

Under AFL rules Palmer is forbidden from engaging in discussions with Gold Coast officials.

But his Perth-based manager, Colin Young from Corporate Sports Australia, is allowed to act on his client's behalf.

Young has already held two lengthy meetings with Gold Coast recruiting manager Scott Clayton.

He said all of his players will consider any offers in the course of new contract negotiations.

Young has not ruled out the talented Palmer leaving the Dockers at the end of next season.

"I haven't yet discussed future contracts with Rhys because right now he wants to concentrate solely on his playing and training commitments with Fremantle," Young said yesterday.

"But I wouldn't be doing my job for my players if I didn't speak with clubs 24/7 about contracts that they might be offered."

Young confirmed he is in discussions with Clayton and ongoing negotiations are expected.

However Young baulked at confirming that the talented Palmer is a priority choice for the new club.
"I've spoken with Scottie Clayton several times regarding all of the Corporate Sports players and I'll continue to do so," Young said.

"No figures have been discussed between Scott and myself as yet for any of my players."

Young is expected to meet with Clayton and Gold Coast officials again within a fortnight.

Gold Coast has the option to sign at least one uncontracted player from all existing 16 AFL clubs.

Young acts for as many as 25 Fremantle and West Coast players.

The new club will have an extra $1million to help attract boutique players in its initial salary cap of $9.21million.

Other high profile targets from WA include giant Dockers ruckman Aaron Sandilands and his teammate Garrick Ibbotson, as well as Eagles big man Quinten Lynch and Chris Masten.

Masten was taken in the same 2007 national draft as Palmer and is also out of contract at the end of next season.

Oh yay... :thumbsu:

Great timing....

and in other news, the eagles today were flogged by 97 points...

The two links for this story read:

*Has anyone told Haggers that the weagles were done like a dog's dinner by the saints today - to the tune of 97 points??*

only the AFL would let a system develop where it feeds of the current teams!

this is B**l**T of the highest order!!

I get where you are coming from, IP and Haggers is a tool!

But I wouldn't trust Colin Young for any money in the world.

Yeah fair call, you are right. But it really is very interesting that Hackdorn chooses today to "break the news"...

Quality deflectio.... err I mean journalism there.

rhys wont go anywhere, the dockers will offer him a nice wage, he is a WA boy, he is performing well, and from the way that he plays, as well as the way that he presents himself in the media, he is freo through and through... haggers is a tosser, young is knob of the highest order... thankfully rhys is nothing like those two blights on the human race

Teams are going to lose some big name players. The amount of money being thrown around just cant or wont be met.

What is Palmer, Ibbo, Sandi worth to Freo, we couldnt meet the offers if we wanted to, luckily Pav will be a veteran soon.

The AFL are just bending the ****ing teams over, not even a kiss n cuddle beforehand :rolleyes::rolleyes:.

Funny, whenever a manager's name comes up regarding a story of an uncontracted Freo player, it's always Colin Young. The club really needs to start giving this guy a very wide berth.

Hopefully, he is in discussions with Clayton about the possibility of Warnock moving there.;)

It isn't even April 1st.. God damn it! If it isn't Rhys it will be someone else.. and they will be lost for sweet fooq all!

Will there be a compensation pick for clubs that lose a player? Or are you just supposed to say thanks andrew and bend over when you lose a first round draft pick and 2 years development?

Players out of contract when GC17 will be sniffing around all clubs - they'll have a few picks that they'll be willing to trade, but they can pick up an uncontracted player from each of the existing clubs...

Tarrant - won't be interested
Sandi - interested (aged 28)
Pav - probably not (aged 29)
McPharlin - probably not (aged 29)
Palmer - definitely interested
Hinkley - most likely interested
Mayne - interested
Duffield - not interested
Thornton - bwahahahahahahahaha..... yeah, go on, take him....
Murphy - as above
Mundy - interested
Hayden - not interested (aged 30)
Ibbotson - definitely interested
Grover - not interested (aged 31)
Ballantyne - maybe interested
Clarke - interested
Walters - interested
Bucovaz - ??
Ruffles - ??
Hall - ??

I made this list on the "Contracts" thread on the Player Watch board a few days ago... along with what I guessed might be the case as far as GC is concerned.... maybe Haggers got his "hot story" from BF... :p

Unfortunately the AFL have learnt that you don't bring in new teams and give them bugger-all drafting and recruiting concessions...

Does anyone know what we'd get if (say) Palmer or Ibbo are poached? Would it be like the first-round picks that Essendon got (to grab Lloyd) after we 'pinched' Delaney?

Or would it simply be a trade as usual??

They can trade for players, but they still have the "right" to court and sign an uncontracted player from each of the existing clubs.

I heard (and I could have this wrong and would welcome correction), that the AFL will "deem" a player's importance to his club, and compensate that club accordingly with an appropriate draft pick(s).

Makes for a level playing field, don't you think?

Collingwood lose Alan Toovey (say). AFL response: an integral part of Collingwood's 22 - have a top 10 pick. [Translation: gotta keep Eddie & crew down at the Lexus Centre happy, as always...]

Freo lose Rhys Palmer (please god, no...). AFL response: well he's only been in the game a short while. Take a 3rd rounder... [Translation: It's only Freo. **** 'em... ]

Everyone is forgetting one important element. It is up to the player still and Rhys isn't a w***er and doesn't want to go home. End of discussion. The club will have enough to give him a home town discount at around 500-600k easy by then if he is worth it. Pav will be on the Vets list by then won't he? Tarrants contract will be up so there will be money to spend.

"Gold Coast interested in good player that may be out of contract"

Stop the ****ing presses.

As most of us on this board should be well aware, it's not that easy to just waltz in and pick up uncontracted players.

If he is offered 700k a year we will have to come up with something comparable even if it means dumping Tarrant or other older highly paid players . WE must keep him !

Oh and on a side note I hope Freo watched Essendon beat Carlton tonight just in case they dont know what the word "effort" means. I hope Harvey saw Knights interviewed after so he understands the terms "tactics" and "plan"

He is our future captain, so making sure he is properly paid is a high priority. The 750k sounds high to try and scare people, that would be based on him continuing his improvement for the next few years I would say. If he is worth it we will pay it, the only problem is if he becomes the next Judd they may throw the book at him and offer something we cannot. They will do this with 2 or 3 players, offer them 300-400K over their value due to their increased salary cap, which funnily enough in a sad way, the existing AFL teams are paying for.

If gold coast are going to pay that much for a player like Palmer, we'd be better to let him go. If we have to match these type of offers across our whole squad, a premiership will always be out of reach. We need players that are loyal, and hopefully Palmer is one of them. Besides, how many Melbourne based West Aussies have had a career beyond footy. The ones that stay get all the promotion, media and coaching gigs.

Believe me, Gold Coast isn't that flash. It has the worst road network in Australia, and it's public transport is totally f****d up. If he left he'd be making a mistake, Perth is a much better place to live.

If Rhys goes to the Gold Coast I doubt he would be catching too many buses! I am sure he would be able to afford to a flash car with good suspension for the dodgy roads. Unfortunatley this is the system we are in now and the odds are we will probably lose one of our guns, but I hope it is not Rhys!

We can cry all we want about loyalty, etc, but unless we can provide Rhys with competitive salary or the likelihood of success why should he stay around? Who here wouldn't take an extra 300k year to do the same job in a place which may be gifted a premiership within a few years of inception?

We need to get our team in order so it looks like sustained success will come, that way he may want to stay even with a lower salary, similar to the Hawks/Geelong players.

Someone who has integrity, loyalty and is a decent human being. I.e not you.
