RIP Hookesy

I'm absolutely stubbed over this. I can't believe Hookesy is gone. My thoughts and prayers are definetly with all his family and friends.

Even though I am in no way a fan of the Victorian cricket team, I hope they can pull it together for the rest of the season and win this won for David.

RIP Hooksey :(

.... This is the saddest news to come out of cricket for decades, it's even sadder than the passing of the Don, at least the Don lived a good life, but Hookes's life was taken away from him...

Absolutely terrible news, it really is... Was a great cricketer, great cricket brain, big hitter, perhaps could've done more with his Test career, but he already entertained millions with the way he bats. Then after cricket, he entertained with his voice.

What he did for the Vics was miraclous, from some who mock us from other states for years, we dominated this season, he was on top of Australian cricket, and then some lousy, irresponsible coward ends his life...

That bloody bouncer better be stick in jail for life......

RIP Hookes, you legend, thanks for the memories.

Also our thoughts with Lehmann in this incident, this must be the toughest period of his life, with a nasty injury that threatened his international career, and now this...

Today is a very sad day for any cricket fan.

David Hookes will be remembered for hitting England Captain, Tony Greig for 5 consecutive fours in his first ever test, the Centenery Test in 1977.

My thoughts are with his family and friends during this very difficult time.

RIP Hooksey.

RIP David Hookes. An memorable innings as a cricketer, commentator and bloke, yet a tragically incomplete one. God bless.

I'm sure I speak for all the cricket fans in the UK who remember David Hookes when I extend my codolences to his family and friends as well as all the lives he touched.

I remember how I felt less than 2 years ago when Ben Hollioake died and guess many of you are feeling the same now.

I remember David Hookes in the Centenary Test (what a game that was) and then on Tour in 1977 over here. Although he didn't have a great summer I was always surprised, especially given his exploits back home, that he played so few Tests afterwards.

May he be at peace.

RIP David

Condolences to the family also.

I only hope that this serves as a lesson to the thug culture that is evolving in Australia. If David had have been Joe Bloggs from 10 Smith st Smithville this would hold about 2 paragraphs in the newspapers, cause it;s David Hookes it will be in the papers for days, I only hope that others can learn from this tragedy and it curtails the violence in our society.

it is a shame that it is true, but thats human nature to wanna know more about someone who is famous.

hopefully this will get outrage from the community and will see an inquiry into the security industry which has needed a serious overhaul for the last three years.

Really devastating news. :(

The bloke was a true legend to the game, and a great stalwart to Victorian cricket.

Hookesy was just in the wrong place and the wrong time, and the victim of a brutal and callous attack. It wasn’t in his nature to be involved in a fight, and it truly is a dark day in cricket history.

Come on Victoria, do it for the great man and win both forms of the game.

R.I.P. David Hookes. :(

It is too easy to get your license. I got mine in two days and the blokes who took the course with me were known trouble makers. Any idiot can get a crowd controllers ticket.

Bye David, what you did for Victorian Cricket will never be forgotten.

Going to miss his voice each night on 3AW.

Assuming the match goes ahead, i urge all Victorians to go to the match on Friday to pay tribute to a bloke who touched both Victorian and South Australian cricket. I'll be there.

RIP David Hookes :(

Fine tribute. No doubt his contribution to SA cricket during his playing career and Vic cricket for his short coaching career was enormous. SA and VIC should play for the David Hookes Cup each Pura Cup game they play each other.

R.I.P David Hookes.

Will miss him every night on Aw.
God Bless.

Hard to articulate my thoughts.......VALE D.W.Hookes....will miss your infectious smile and wondefully insightful insights on sport and cricket in particular......condolences to Robyn and the family:( :( :( :( :(

Adelaide talk back stations (5AA and 5DN) should be congratulated for such touching tributes tonight. Plus, the many emotional callers who took the time to share their memories made it a sad but special night.

Hookesy, I have your book and have had it for years but have never read it. I will read it very soon.
You were a delight to talk to many years ago when calling your sports show quiz with KG(and winning it!) as a child.

I hope the SACA can get either a monument to put out the front of the Adelaide Oval or even add his name to the new stands.

It's probably a bit too early but any indications of Hookesy being laid to rest in his beloved home state? I also think that the SACA should organise a public tribute where they throw the gates open and the people can reflect on his life after a small service at the ground he made his name at. I would be proud to attend.

From Crikey.com.au

Don't shoot the messenger, I am juts realaying the sealed section.

1. HINCH ANNOUNCES IMMINENT DEATH OF DAVID HOOKES

"I know it will be announced in the next couple hours that David Hookes has died".

So said a very emotional Derryn Hinch at the start of his 3AW Drive program today. Hinch was citing his “sources” although an hour later the 3AW 5pm news led with him “still fighting for his life”.

Hinch believes David Hookes' family had made the decision to turn off his life-support system.

Hookes was due to be on air at 3AW at 6pm tonight.

Interviewed by his Drive presenter, 3AW's general manager Shane Healy refused to comment until an official announcement came from the hospital but that didn't hold Hinch back.

Hinch is also reporting that the charges against pub bouncer Zdravco Micevic won't be upgraded from assault to manslaughter or murder because he didn't believe the punch could be fatal and it was Hookes' head hitting the ground that caused his death.

This is certainly an incredibly sad story and Crikey is as shocked as anyone. Obviously, it is at a completely different level to the Jeff Fenech bashing.

However, Crikey's role in this story will be to monitor the media’s response, not eulogise.

Expect this to be all over the TV news and current affairs shows for days, especially in Melbourne, but the fact Micevic has been officially charged with one charge of common assault will greatly restrict what the media can report about the incident. You would think the media lawyers will be busy this afternoon.

It won't be a jury trial if it stays in the Magistrates Court so this does take some of the pressure off the media.

Micevic might want to clear out of his St Albans home pretty quickly as there will be plenty of angry sports fans looking for a bit of street justice.

Edit - Address reference removed.
