I'd like to make this suggestion

Seeing as Victoria are scheduled to meet SA at the G from Friday, and that Hookesy would prefer to see the game being played, wouldn't it make sense to have a hearse go around the G on Friday or the weekend, so the fans can pay tribute to him?
As Russian said, the body may not be released by then; but some form of tribute to David Hookes from the game would be a good idea.
I've been in Sydney for many years and follow NSW these days, but what do you think of the idea of the winner of Victoria v South Australia games being presented with the David Hookes Trophy? We have cups for various footy games these days, and I think it would be a good way to ensure David Hookes is remembered.
I'll be in Melbourne this weekend. I'm mainly down for the Australian Open, but I may go over to the MCG for some cricket while I'm there.

Again my deepest sympathies to the Hookes family and to everyone who loved him.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned (my computer's having a fit, so I can't go read past messages atm) so if I'm repeating a suggestion apologies - but I'd love to see a David Hookes Cup game between SA and Vic happen outside the Pura Cup Season with proceeds going to a charity chosen by the Hookes family or the Cricket Academy...

I don't think I can add anymore to the comments on this board and thread.

All I can say is we have lost a great man.

I also have not been able to read all the posts.
Deepest sympathies all who knew Hookesy.

I agree about the cup it is a great idea and sure that there will be something in the future when Vic and SA play.

Yes, I suggested it earlier in the thread (or in another one) but it seems like a fitting tribute to the man. I'd make all Sheffield Shield clashes between the sides for the Hookes Cup, after all it was the Shield he loved so much.

Sorry - I wasn't trying to steal your thunder.

A sad day for cricket and life in general. I can't help but have a tear in my eye whenever i think about what happened. An incident that could well and truly have been avoided. What a waste of a life of a man who still had so much to offer society in general. Man the world sucks sometimes.

RIP David Hookes. Sympathy to family and friends.

A scholarship for an up-and-coming kid to attend the cricket academy given he was a mentor and inspiration to many young cricketers.

R.I.P Hooksey

Condolences to the Hookes family at this very very trough time

Bouncer scum, burn him at the stake, this is an absolute tradgedy, he was such a fantastic bloke, ive seen him play quite a few games when i was very small and used to go to the cricket with my dad. Ive got his autograph and he patted me on the head....I cant believe it, he was never afriad to say what he thought and I admired him very much for that.

I write this post with a heavy heart.

Just after 7.30 p.m tonight on the way home from the gym, in my car with the sun and wind on my face, i heard that David Hookes had lost his fight for life.

A man of 48. To many of you an age that is decades away, or the age of your parents, but from someone closer to Davids age than many of you, it really tends to make me question my own mortality, and absolute good fortune that there by the grace of god go I.

At 20 y.o you are gunna live for ever, at 30, death is something that happens to someone else, at 40, it is something that becomes more prevelant. When a contemporary is killed it becomes almost personal.

Sorry to carry on, but the death of Hookes is something we all should learn from. Our life is so fleeting and fragile, go to work, the footy, a pub, down the shops and you may not come back. Hit your head and you could just end it all in seconds.

Never take your life for granted, never presume that death happens to someone else, and enjoy every second you have on this planet.

And enjoy the sun on your face and wind in your hair while you can.

David Hookes, your death is such a sensless waste.

May you rest in peace.

Here Here Joffa. Great Post.

I still can't quite believe this has happened. I can't imagine how his family would be feeling.
RIP Hookesy, and thanks for your contribution to South Australian, Victorian and Australian cricket, you'll be missed. Best wishes to his family.

RIP Hooksey

It's always terrible to hear about someone passing on, and having recently experienced the loss of a loved one myself, I can just imagne the deep seated grief his family and closest friends are going through. Time may heal, anger may subside, the pain may fade, never give up. My condolences to the Hookes family.

Got it in one Joffa.....
What seems so god damn sad, is that it seems that people are now becoming younger when experiencing sudden and tragic losses. I'm only 29, and have lost a parent, partner, and unfortunatley, quite a few friends (a couple, I'm afraid, were murder victims). To everyone who's hurting, bewildered and stung, take Joffa's advice, go out and enjoy the sun (or if you're in Melbourne, the stifling heat).

Hugs all round.

All lovers of cricket around the world are devastated by this senseless loss. 3AW and its listeners too. I'd like to endorse the accolade given to Dwayne Russell's efforts in continuing Sports Tonight under what must have been almost impossible circumstances, last night. There was a thread on the General Talk Board last week, about when and why we cry. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm still teary about Hookesy's demise, mostly because it seems to have been so avoidable.

I was fortunate to have seen him bat a few times and he was one of the most exciting cricketers ever. I saw him make 180 odd, for S.A., at the Junction Oval one day and he just kept hitting our slow bowlers into Fitzroy St. I've never seen a cricket ball hit further or harder.

Some might say he wasn't a raging success as a Test bat, but 23 Tests is 23 more than most of us will ever play. He was found out by a technique flaw around his pads, which was exploited by the very professional and quick bowlers playing at the time. What he lacked in technique was certainly compensated with courage and the perfect attitude to sport.

He was a great broadcaster, even if you didn't agree with his opinions. I really feel sorry for Gerard Healy today.

His efforts for the Victorian team as coach over the past 2 years meant that we Victorians have claimed him as our own. I'll admit I wasn't too sure when the appointment was made, but he showed me to be horribly wrong with his nous, flair and the attacking spirit he engendered in what had been a team of no-hopers.

The tremendous win by the Victorian team when they scored 455 in the final innings last week, should stand as an appropriate monument to all that was David Hookes, the cricket person. And that's what I loved most about David, he was a great cricket person.

His family loved him for other reasons as well and I can't possibly imagine what they're going through. The circumstances of his death will bring them little comfort. It's not as if you can write it off as a freakish accident, like a car smash. I wish them well and hope they're able to eventually find some closure in this tragic tale.

Would love to see the scoreboard hill at Adelaide Oval, officially or unofficially be known as Hooksey's Hill .

One of the best all time banners I read once at Adelaide Oval was
The Australian selectors went fishing and forgot Hookes

I hope all the right things are done this weekend to remember the great man.

David Hookes RIP

Although I didn't always agree on his views, it was hard not to admire the way he always said what he felt and his passion for the game.

Thoughts with his family and friends.

I share the same sentiments as Kenny_01.
