Who the hell just looks at possessions? This is surely a joke post. You know Rich has been playing as an on-baller from round 1 right? Watch him play.

His work off the ball is even more impressive. Ranked 14th in the entire AFL for tackles, ahead of the likes of Luke Power, Chris Judd, Brock McLean, Jobe Watson. And then he still manages to run to the right space to Top 10 in the AFL for Inside 50s (ahead of Dal Santo, Gibbs, Corey, Chapman, Murphy and Rioli) . Add to that some lovely booming goals from outside 50 and you have yourself one impressive first year player. It would seem that some of the biggest names in the game seem to agree. :)

I'm not arguing the fact that he's already a great player, I'm just saying it's plainly obvious they focus their attention on early round draft picks with higher profiles than players who went late in the draft and/or have been in the system for a year or two. Plenty of other great young kids out there and people talk like he's got it wrapped up already. Otten has been fantastic all year and if he keeps it up, is worthy of coming close to winning as is Grimes. Collins not too far away after that along with a couple others. No need to get so defensive, yes we all know he plays for Brisbane.

If Rich wins, it will have nothing to do with where he was taken in the draft (apart from the fact that the more talented players go early in the draft). It will be because he earned in.

Hell, a rookie won the Rising Star not 3 years ago.

The danger with looking at possession counts and disposal efficiency is that it totally ignores where those players are playing. To use my own club's boy as an example, Otten gets a bunch of a ball, uses it very well and makes great decisions both about disposal targets and when/where to play on... but he is a third defender. It's a role that, when played well, is going to earn you bigger numbers and better disposal efficiency than a well played inside midfielder role.

If he was only ending up with comparable numbers to Rich it would be disappointing. He has better numbers, which is exactly what he should have.

There is no question the focus is on players who have been picked early, but the AFL also loves the "rags to riches" story of a late draft pick getting a nomination.

If ward doesn't get it this week, there is something seriously wrong with the selection committee. Unlucky not to get it the last few weeks, and he put in another awesome game last weekend.

He is a pretty poor kick. Only averaging 61% disposal efficiency. However 33 possessions is 33 possessions.

Stop talking him down Barnzy! You're just spewing you gave him up to us in exchange for Jordy! :thumbsu:

I would love Ward over McMahon. We wouldn't have him anyways as we were looking at Scott Selwood not Ward. I was just stating the facts, he needs to work on his disposal.

Ward was averaging something like a dozen possessions and around 55% disposal efficiency per game in the first 5 rounds, so a spell in the two's beckoned. Since his return to the senior team, he has averaged mid 20's possessions and around 75% disposal efficiency per game. So he has taken your sage advise and significantly improved his disposal, as well as getting a hell of a lot more of it (often in contested situations, not the old Deledio standard give-and-get cheapes off half back).

Even if it was 50% disposal efficiency, that would still be 50% higher than McMahon's current disposal efficiency in the AFL.

Typical. Can't even have an intellectual discussion, everyone in the end has to resort to trolling to get their way.

I doubt he'll ever get one.
I also agree, this is mostly due to the fact he hasn't starred this year (apart from last week, played very well), but a 2nd year player and high draft pick should be performing better (however I do understand he has had OP troubles). If his disposal count was down, but he was getting tackles, goals, 1%'ers, then he'd be a lock for a nomination, but I don't think he's doing enough of either to warrant a nomination thus far. Although, if he keeps his form from the previous weekend up, it won't be long until he receives a nomination and proves us wrong.

Even though this guy was clearly trolling, surely Richmond fans wouldn't be overly happy with what Mcmahon has brought to the club? Just a question and I'm not trying to bag the bloke, just seems to not perform to the ability I thought he had every week.

None of the Richmond fans are happy with McMahon, don't think I've ever seen one say they're. He is a spud.

Masten has deserved a nomination from more than one of his performances this year. Round 2 and Round 4 where both excellent games and perhaps better than the winner of the nomination, Mastens output is well within the normal range, higher than allot of players with a nomination.

As for his output i expect it to be more consistent and with that his impact will be noticed. He will need to do allot to win a nomination, strange though his tackle count is allot lower in 2009 than in 2008.

I swear I am not bashing for the sake of bashing, but from what I saw Masten was NOT good against Richmond.

You obviously see him a lot more than I do, so I'll take your word for it. But from an outsider's point of view, when he plays bad, it is really noticeable, consistency is something that in my opinion is he lacks (like a lot of young players), but I do believe he will be a solid player for your club.:thumbsu:

You carlton fans are sounding as bad as essendon fans saying Pears should get one. Flogging a dead horse, Ward's got it, if Broughtons eligible, he might but i suspect he isn't.
Aaron Joseph does deserve one by years end, Pears, haven't seen enough to make judgement, but I would suspect not on the games I have seen of him.
