Rob Snowdon's back in town

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Rob Snowdon is on a Port Adelaide sub-committee formed to look at the spend of the bridging funds from the AFL and SANFL including resourcing, playing list and structures.

The sub-committee has been running for 18 months but has stepped up activity in the past couple of months, headed by Bruce Abernethy and also seeks input from Warren Tredrea.

Ah, beautiful.

How can we wedge him into the Footy Ops role again?

I got the heads up on this early last week - well that Snowdon was coming back to the club.

I was sceptical that he would be our Footy Ops guy again, but I thought it would be good to get him back in any capacity. Who knows if he will get involved any further.

If a review of our fitness program is not being looked at then we're not serious.

The conditioning and fitness of the playing group is so far off the pace of AFL footy it is not funny and that is a part of the reason we're being seriously found out.

If Cam Falloon survives into next season, I'll be worried.

Re: New Assistants!

Heardfrom my port insider that Rob Snowden will become Peter Rhodes football department manager assistaint and while still working for ETSA whats good to have him back full time

Rob Snowdon is back in town again, hear he is running for the Club Board.

Warren Tredrea pushed Rob's name forward as a football troubleshooter back in 2018.

If you want ruthless, Rob is your man.

Wayne Jackson and Rob Snowden the men to help SA clubs bounce back from disappointment of 2018

AFTER the disappointment of 2018 for SA’s two AFL clubs, it is time for clear, outside eyes to examine what went wrong and bring a fresh outlook in time for next season.
Fresh eyes are needed at Adelaide and Port to gain further understanding of what went wrong — and they must be from outside the club.
Two senior, well respected, independent, experienced SA footy heads are right now worth picking up the phone and asking if they’re prepared to help.
Former AFL CEO and passionate South Aussie Wayne Jackson is one, the other former Port Adelaide and Sydney football manager Rob Snowden; two experienced football people whose opinions are widely respected and listened to.

Rob Snowdon is a great choice for the board. I've met Grantley Stephens before at club functions and whilst he has his strengths, he doesn't have as wide experience as Snowdon. I don't know anything about Greg Troughton.

As ex footy ops boss of 2 AFL clubs, you know he wont be intimidated in evaluating and questioning Hinkley directly when Hinkley has to present to the board, and at other times when just discussing things with other board members.

He is more useful on the board than an ex player who backs the status quo.

Plus from a club 'business' pov, Snowdon was the one who went to Bucky and said we should set up the Community programs, like he had seen with the Swans, but along with Bucky and the ex primary school principal who took 12 months off work to set up the programs, they were so much more comprehensive than the ones at the Swans.

Snowdon knew players would become full time club employees at the end of 1999 season, and that the community programs had the dual effect of giving them stuff to do during their days at Port, when they weren't training or in meetings, rather than just play computer games, and helping develop their non football side, and it would grow our base of fans as we had a chance to influence kids who weren't rusted on fans of the crows and other clubs. The other masterstroke was to invite Russell Ebert to be the face of the programs and help run them and bring him back to the club's fold.

And it's probably a good thing that a club based in a port area, has a director that has boat building experience.

What a breath of fresh air.

Rob Snowdon, Multi-tasker - genuine football management qualifications which would make CD’s life easier and widen the pressured frown on Hinkley’s face, a civvy street leadership experience greater than Koch’s, community cause leadership experience which fits perfectly the Club’s identity, a decade’s experience in a senior commercial post with a China (Hong Kong) owned power corporation … … …

This is a director-to-be who could run Richo’s Chasing Greatness project for him.

This is a board-member-to-be who will be taken seriously in AFL House.

Sign. Him. Up. Now.

I'll be voting for Snowdon. Sounds like he's highly competent, and not someone who will kowtow to people at the club who deserve no such respect. The experience (football, commercial and community) is a big plus too. I don't see a gap in the resume.
If elected, not sure how much sway he would have in decision making.

Stand to be corrected, but I would envisage that Kochie's say still holds the most leverage in Boardroom parlay?

Anything would be better than Gavin "I'm sort of an Essendon fan" Wanganeen hiding in the corner unwilling to speak.

Snowdon will challenge dumb decisions and call people to account. He is as Dennis Cometti would say, one tough hombre and has the football and business background to know what is a good call and what isn't and make a statement either way.

Snowdon would be a genuine disrupter on the board and will generate discussion that will embolden others to see issues from alternative viewpoints.

Was going to respond properly, but Ford Fairlane has put it best: he is a disrupter who will challenge decisions, potentially emboldening others to do the same. Better than having another yes man/woman on the board.

Anyone here know if Snowden has divested the Crows as a client yet?
Feels very inappropriate for a PAFC board candidate to be a strategic advisor to the AFC and a mentor to their coach.

That's probably only in a wealth acceleration capacity. Isn't that their measure of success? 😉

Excellent background REH!

I met with Snowden back then in one of the portables they had set up at Alberton to run the club from where he pitched his idea for doing what he did with Sydney on a larger scale in SA.

His vision for the community programs forms the basis of what both the Crows and Port do on a large scale now but at the time we had a bugger of a time convincing the SA Government Depts like Education to take the idea seriously.

The pushback from the Education Dept bureaucrats was unbelievable - saying they couldn't risk having football players going into school grounds and class rooms and, of course, saying they would only consider the proposal if the Crows were involved too. (I won't repeat what Rob said whenI passed that bit of feedback back to him!).

In the end it wasn't until the new Employment Minister Jane Lomax-Smith took up the fight herself in Cabinet that the idea got any traction within government. It was her idea to get Gavin Wanganeen (loaded with packs of Tim Tams) to front up with her at an official Treasury budget bilateral meeting with then Treasurer Kevin Foley to try and get a decent budget allocation for the idea. The look on Foley's face was priceless…and it worked!

The work that Rob (and David Hutton) did in getting that program up and running to the extent it plays now such a pivotal role in govt and community outreach across regional South Australia and NT has never got the recognition it deserves.

Having him back at Alberton breaking balls in any capacity is just what our club needs!
