I know we have been stupid in suggesting out going players as potential targets to get across to our side.

But as it seems, Russell Robertson has retired against his will and has said he would love to chip in with a 2 goal minimum per game for a club if they would have him.

Not to mention, that with the improved midfield supply that he would get from Geelong rather than Melbourne, he could potentially play better.

Any chance? Probably not, but not a BAD discussion all round.

Agree. Usually these type of threads get boring, but getting Robertson would be pretty realistic and as you said he would be a great forward for us with our midfield delivery.

I can't see many clubs wanting him so I doubt he will be chasing big dollars.

I don't care who he goes to as long as whoever picks him up wins the flag, the bloke bled red and blue and I want to see him end his career with a flag.

He's kicked 23 goals from about 10 games or so this season with delivery that could only be described as of U/12 quality. So he's averaging a touch over 2 goals a game for us, don't forget he had little to no pre-season and I don't think he would be after much in terms of money just a chance to end his career with a flag.

The first thing I pictured once I read his retirement article was Geelong toannounce with pick 60-odd in the draft "Russel Robertson" lol..

Id be all for it. Above all it would add depth to our line up to cover injuries...A fit robbo would score 50 goals in our team next year...

I gotta admit we should have a look at Robbo. If his body isn't shot (struggled to get on the park the last few years) I think he would improve our forward line quite significantly, could even be our leading goal kicker (not as impressive as it sounds though haha).

I would think Gamble's future is a hurdle but right now is he even going to be that leading forward or is he now a midfielder?

Funny, while watching the Melbourne Freo game on sunday i was actually thinking that someone like Robbo who can get his own ball, take a few good grabs, and kick a few goals would actually fit in quite well at the cats and actually add somethng. Looks like i wasnt the only one.

I suppose it depends how generous Melbourne are.

I suspect he won't be delisted but I'm sure Melbourne would be open to a Steven King-trade for nothing trade.

So it would really depend on where Roberston wants to go.

Who would he replace at Geelong though?

Nup...wouldn't go there. As good as he has been for Melbourne i still think he is past it. He is now injury prone and goes down ten times a match each time picking himself off the deck with 5 trainers in hand. 5 minutes later he is ok....we don't need that.

If we can get him for bugger all, I think he would make a good bailout option. If there are no open options in the forward line-bomb to Robbo. He can take a good grab, and is a reliable kick for goal. If he's cheap, it couldn't hurt too bad.

He's out of contract, they just need a spot on there senior list so they can use a pick in the PSD if they want him.

When Bomber was asked about the possibility of getting Barry Hall when he left Sydney, he said something along the lines of "I'm not interested in getting recycled players to the club."

With this in mind I can't see it happening. Both Robbo and Hall have been linked to the Dogs - imagine if they got both on bargain basement wages - they'd be in amazing shape for 2010.

Bomber also said you can never say never either.

If he can hold himself up physically and is a cheap option for us I think why not? I think he'd fit in quite well and easily fit in the culture/personality of Geelong. And kick a few goals of course ;) Especially while our premiership window is still open and we're constantly bagged about our forward line. This would only improve things!

If you take a quick look out the window you'll see a white van pulled up out the front. The two blokes getting out are carrying a funny looking contraption which looks like a harness - well, more specifically it's a straight jacket with your name stitched on the back. I'd start running if I was you.

But in all seriousness, it won't happen because it goes completely against what Geelong has proved to be a tried and true process of building a strong list.

Someone mentioned in another post that Robbo has kicked 23 goals from 10 games .... about the same conversion rate as Tomahawk. I don't think I need to expand any further. Forget the quality of the delivery .... I've seen some pretty ordinary delivery to Hawkins during the year so I would'nt get too excited by what Robbo would do.

Hawkins 24 from 19 games
Robbo 23 from 11 games

Just needed to be expanded a little further

You forgot to call for the sedation, clearly in need of it

I'd love to have him at the Cattery if there was a need to get him. The forward line is looking a bit cramped at the moment whilst trying to get Gamble into it (and one Maxy Rooke has a few good years left in him on the half forward line), so don't think Robbo would fit easily.

Might be worth a look if Gamble wants to go back to SA and Mooney retires after a 3rd flag :)

With the Gold Coast hitting the draft next year this years draft should not be wasted on has been players. We need to make sure that we get some good young players to carry us through the next few years.

As much as I don't like him, he would be pretty handy in our forward line right now...

Bloody Nathan... Who were all those people that said it didn't matter with him leaving with Hawkins to easily cover him?

Even with one or two retirements the salary cap is still going to be a tight squeeze I would say.

As with all these older re-cycled players, if they are willing to come to Geelong on low money in exchange for possible success, then they should be looked at, otherwise no way.

People thought Steven King was past it too. He has provided a strong impact for 2 seasons now

Robbo's only 30...trade him for pick 90 and he becomes the 4th or 5th forward in our forward line..That would be a dangerous propostion for 2010

imaging this as our 6..

Robbo-Hawkins-Johnson
Chapman-Mooney-Rooke/Byrnes

(id only offer a one year contract though)
