  • NEW Carlton ruckman Robert Warnock is on track to play Round 1 in the VFL as his recovery from a foot injury gathers momentum.
He has increased his training load after a series of shoulder, ankle and foot problems wiped out his summer.

Blues' football manager Stephen Icke said the club was optimistic Warnock could run out with the Northern Bullants in their season-opener on April 12. But a return date to AFL was less clear for the former Fremantle Docker.

"Round 1 in the VFL might be about right, but he may not be back playing AFL until mid-season because his pre-season effectively started only one week ago," Icke said.

"He is a long way behind everyone else. But his fitness comes on pretty quickly."

Icke said Warnock, 22, naturally felt frustrated being on the sidelines over pre-season, but was otherwise happy to be back among family in Melbourne.

His eventual return is hoped to give the Blues an extra edge to an already impressive onball department.

The 206cm ruckman played 21 games in three seasons at Fremantle before his move to Princes Park in October.
