Rock Groups and Songs That sounded great but never made it big.

This is for less known bands or songs that should have been big so no U2,Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Kiss,INXS,The Doors,Short Stack,Birds Of Tokyo,Linkin Park,Kings Of Leon,Powderfinger or the rest of the top 40 bands.

Here is a few to start off how Savatage wasn't big is a mystery.

These are obviously the excellent bands people tell me about who don't make it because the music execs are too busy pushing insipid (but cash cows) like Beiber and Rob Thomas.

The music industry always push the bands with the looks more then the music as long as they write one good track or two on a record for a single.Take the example of a band called Poison their singer copied the lead singer of KIX moves on stage and style but both bands had good songs but one made it while the other didn't.KIX were more AC/DC less image and had better records and Poison had hit singles but weaker records that sold the the millions more as they were promoted like crazy and dressed so glammy early to attract MTV and others.

A bald fella who appears to be a stay-at-home-dad-who-STILL-LIKES-TO-ROCK-OUT-with-the-boys is simply not sexy enough to sell records. Sorry Frank Black, Black Francis or Tracky Dack Joe... Whatever the ***k your name is/was.

Good tunes though. Nobody cares because your room probably smells like Brut.

Great call on Savatage by the OP :thumbsu: Even within their style/genre they seem to be a little forgotten, which is puzzling.

Still don't understand how Matthew Good Band wasn't one of the biggest alt-rock acts in the world in the late '90s/ early '00s. They were massive in Canada, and it might have been a bit of self-sabotage on the part of the titular lead singer, but still, every single track on Beautiful Midnight (1999) and The Audio of Being (2001) is awesome. Their lyrics and lyrical themes were probably too intellectual for radio, but geez they were a good band (pardon the pun). Good's solo work since has been great too, but hasn't quite matched what he did with the MGB behind him. Here's some of their best:

Scarymother.

Mind blowing live.

Put out an excellent album and that was that.

P.S. Looks like there is a new project going called Floating Me.
Album out soon apparently and gigs in November.

Should be awesome.

F L O A T I N G M E is Andrew Gillespie (vocals), Antony Brown (guitar) and Tobias Messiter (keyboards) of Scarymother, Jon Stockman (bass) of Karnivool and Lucius Borich (drums) of Cog.

Remember this band?

I think drugs got the better of them or maybe the US record industry..

I'm surprised 'The Presidents Of The United States Of America' were not much bigger then what they were.

not showing much nina grant in a film clip can't be a good career move

first one that came to mind, my sister's machine. one of those grunge also-runs, seems to be a lot of (gruntruck et al)

not surprisingly shared band members with early AIC. in comparison they're more consistent but a bit less interesting.

helmet is another one usually mentioned. i guess it's relative in some way.

I always thought Marcy Playground were amazing and always thought they should be bigger than they were. They made 3 albums, Marcy Playground, Shapeshifter and MP3. But then broke up. Only had one hit single which was off there first self titled album, Sex and Candy. But they were far better than that track. Shapeshifter is a terrific album with songs like America, Rebel Sodville, It's Saturday, Secret Squirrel and Wave Motion Gun. But there first self titled album was freaking awesome.

Another band who only made one record and didnt make it were Starky I believe they were from Melbourne, self titled album and it was freaking awesome but they were never heard from again.

Anyone get into Marcy or have heard of Starky?

Yep I liked Marcy Playground debut album but never really heard anything from them after that.

I liked both Marcy Playground and Starky :thumbsu: Hadn't thought about either of them for a while until you mentioned them. Particularly surprised Starky weren't bigger than they were, or didn't last longer. There's a fair few reasonably big bands in the Australian indie scene that they'd be comfortably better than.

It's a shame that Youth Group's cover of "Forever Young" bought them their greatest success but seemingly killed them commercially as well. They're apparently on an "extended break" at the moment, but it leaves one of the best Australian albums of the decade, Skeleton Jar (2004) as a sadly underlistened, unknown gem to most people.

Still waiting to hear new stuff from Expatriate, nearly 4 years after their debut album.

I hated sex and candy. absolutely detested it, however I enjoyed much of their other work especially the 8-ball song from the cruel intentions soundtrack(iirc) thats still on my ipod.
